The 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40 Gran Coupe (18-inch wheels) puts down 335 hp, 301 miles of EPA range and a 81 kWh battery, and a do-not-drive recall is in play, so VIN status comes before everything else.
Score read
A 72/100 makes this worth inspecting. Software and driver-assist score is the cleaner read at 95/100; battery-health score needs more diligence at 65/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: software tech and owner satisfaction. A clean VIN lookup matters more than the headline count.
Price context
Used examples are running around $30,619. This trim started from $55,400 new, though options can push the actual sticker higher; treat the market number as your negotiation floor and pull a current KBB Fair Purchase before naming a price.
Who this is for
✓ Good for
- ⏱ Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging
- ↦ Road tripper Long trips, needs DC fast network

- $ Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation
Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Verify Battery condition is the number not to take on faith (65/100).
Mitigation Require a battery-health report, charging history, or dealer diagnostic before final price.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 301-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Ask for a battery-health report or dealer diagnostic before discussing final price.

Dealers make ~$8,884 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 20 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

I recently had an accident with the car. I was driving in a gated subdivision under very low speed, when I put the shifter in reverse in order to back up the car, the car failed to go into reverse and gave no warning, I assumed that the car was in reserve mode and tried to accelerate, the car lurched forward instead, hit some rocks and stopped. We requested BMW engineering team to inspect the car. they failed to identify any issue with the shifter or explain why the shifter did not go into reverse and gave no warning when it happened

My BmW I4 M50 was parked and turned off. While I was behind the wheel the car. Suddenly the car took off and hit a curb and went thru some trees. I took my cat to creviar bmw and an engineer from bmw came to check out the vehicle. The engineer checked out the car, BMW had my car for 3 and half weeks and after told me nothing was wrong with the car. I don’t trust bmw. This is my second EV. I think BMW is trying to cover up the issue.

Sept 2, 2022: I was driving my BMW i4 eDrive40 2022 model going to work when suddenly I heard the rear tire blown off and the Notification on my screen indicating tire pressure on my Rear Right Tire is going down fast. I was able to pull over safely to the curbside and called for roadside assistance. The vehicle was towed to Pacific BMW Glendale CA for tire replacement. They said that the damage to the tire is so immense that it is beyond repair. I’m glad that I have bought a wheel and Tire Insurance from BMW and only has to do a co-pay of $50. But it took 10 days for me to pick up my car from the dealership by just trying to replace one (1) Rear Right tire.

I was driving at approximately 60 MPH on the Freeway when I heard a loud bang, the car started to vibrate and shortly after that I realized I had a problem with a tire. The display indicated a tire with low pressure. I pulled over and saw the damage to the tire on the Driver left hand side. I brought the car to the dealer service department. I paid to have a new tire installed and I kept the damaged one. No one else has looked at the tire yet. Tire size 225/50 R18 99W XL failed. There are seven (7) holes on the side wall and one (1) hole on the tread. The tire is available for inspection.

What Owners Are Saying
"I was concerned originally about range coming from a Tesla Y LR to a BMX i4 eDrive 40. I was willing to give up some range due to the many issues with the "Y", mainly "Ghost Braking". I took delivery of the i4 and about 2 weeks later I drove the i4 from my home in La Quinta, CA to San Diego, CA. I charged the i4 to 100% before leaving, drove the round trip 242 miles with out stopping to charge and still had 121 miles of range when I pulled into my garage. I never could have done this with the "Y"!!! It wasn't a fluke as I frequently drive r/t to Marina del Rey, CA (south of LA) similar distance to the SD trip with similar results... Absolutely, love the Bimmer and no issues. OBTW, real leather and other amenities that Tesla doesn't! #62· Dec 9, 2022 Took delivery of the i4 in late July and with almost all urban only driving got a steady 3.3 to 3.4 miles/kWh (Sacramento weather warm). Now that the ambient daytime temperature is in the 40s I am getting a steady 2.8 miles/kWh. Same 19" tires and using comfort mode; using heater instead of AC. Does the ambient temperature really make this big a difference on range or is something else going on?"

"It's common for our i4 eDrive 40 with 18" wheels to get over 4 mi/kWh. The last charge with mostly freeway miles at about 70mph got 4.1 mi/kWh. If we can pull 80kWh out of the battery pack for just driving, we would get 328 miles. #14· Oct 6, 2022 Many thanks for this taminatorv. I too get over 4 on my Kia so would hope to get that on the i4. #15· Oct 6, 2022 I just posted, I have averaged 3.35 m/kWh over 4998 miles driven since April 7th. I live in Florida, so the car is operated in a lot of heat, just starting to leave summer temps. AC is on always when I drive and I precondition for about 5-10 minutes several days per week before leaving work. Highways here, we are typically travelling 80 mph easily, although I am not putting a ton of highway miles on the car."

"I test drove a BMW i4 MSport ProPack with adaptive suspension in May 2022. My wife has severe back problems. This was the 13th differen EV we had tried and the only one that she considered had an acceptable ride but only in Comfort mode. After only 100m in Sport mode she had me switch back to comfort because she found the ride completely unacceptable. The dealership advised me that the Sport model without adaptive suspension would have similar ride quality to the MSport ProPack in comfort mode. There seemed little point is spending the extra money on the adaptive dampers, if the car was to spend its life in confirm mode only. I was also able to specify 17" wheels on the Sport model, in the hope of further improving the ride quality. I now have the car and my wife considers the ride quality completely unacceptable. There is definitely a significant difference between a car with adaptive suspension in comfort mode and a car without adaptive suspension mode. I now have brand new BMW i4 that my wife refuses to ride in. Absolute disaster. If anyone wants the best possible ride available from a BMW i4, then the adaptive suspension is a must."
