The 2023 Genesis G80 Electrified puts down 282 miles of EPA range, 187 kW fast charging and a 83 kWh battery, and the score gets it into the conversation; battery and service records decide whether to make an offer.
Score read
A 66/100 makes this a paperwork-and-test-drive decision. Do not let the composite hide this split: software and driver-assist score is 100/100, while range and efficiency score is 43/100. Reddit owners keep flagging owner satisfaction — check it against the service history. Documented completion matters more than the recall count itself.
Price context
Used examples are running around $39,862. Treat that as a budgeting floor, not a final price; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase or Edmunds True Market Value for this exact trim before negotiating.

- Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (43/100).
Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 282-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 10-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Dealers make ~$10,122 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 19 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

When using the I-Pedal feature the brake lights do not come on at any point when lifting off the accelerator pedal gradually. This certainly can cause the vehicle to rear ended if the following car is not paying attention. If you take your foot off the accelerator fully for full regeneration the brakes lights do come on. I was following my wife in her Genesis G80 EV and I noticed the brake lights not coming on. I did report it to both Genesis and the dealer but they did not know of any issue or could tell me when the brake lights should come on. This issue has been reported in the following article and it looks like it may be an issue with all the Hyundai Group EVs. https://apple.news/AyymCGI5gTlCa1ZeFW0jAxg

Our 2023 Genesis G80 electrified has been towed three times for the 12v battery or its electrical system. We have yet to drive the Genesis once. It is a safety danger which produces toxic smells in the interior and the trunk plastic gets hot to the touch. The interior was impregnated with the smell as the car was closed. Given the symptoms, the dealership refused to drive the vehicle for service and had it towed due to safety concerns. They attempted repairs three times, finding no error codes or answers the first two times. They returned the dangerous defective vehicle twice. On the third repair attempt, they stated the battery has a short circuit that is causing it to overheat to temperatures over 166 degrees. They also found the accelerator pedal and sensor assembly was out of specifications. Both were replaced, but they have been unsuccessful in getting the smoke/burnt smell out of the vehicle. It has saturated into all of the interior surfaces. Both are extreme concerns for fire risk as well as danger when driving since the accelerator pedal was not working as it should have been.

My TWO WEEK OLD 2023 Genesis G80, which has less than 1000 miles on it, lost all motive power (i.e. power to the engine) after driving for approximately four hours. We were sitting in stop-and-go-traffic on the George Washington Bridge in New York, with the engine off (because of the vehicle's auto-off function). When the car ahead of us moved, I lifted my foot off the brake pedal, pressed the gas, and the engine immediately failed to respond, sputtered, and stopped. After about a minute, we were able to restart the engine and continue driving. We drove for another approximately 1.5 hours, including a short rest stop. Then, while traveling at highway speed of ~75 MPH in the left passing lane of Interstate 84, the engine again lost all motive power. When the accelerator was depressed, there was no response. I was able to (narrowly) safely maneuver (drift) my car into the breakdown lane, and when the car finally stopped, the engine stopped entirely (it had been sputtering while coasting). After a few minutes, I was again able to get the car re-started, and we were able to drive another five minutes, before the car again lost all power, forcing us to drift off the interstate into the breakdown lane, near the beginning of an off ramp. I saw that there was a Hyundai dealer approximately a mile off the ramp, and so tried to reach the dealership. The car lost all engine power multiple time, just trying to reach that dealership. In the parking lot, we were unable to even start the engine any time in the next three hours. Most concerning, after having the car towed to a Genesis dealer, the dealership reports that the car showed NO FAULTS OR ERRORS, and they are completely in the dark as to why the car lost all power, both while stopped, and at highway speeds, and failed over and over. The lack of any reported faults or errors is both baffling and extremely worrisome. The dealer "hopes" but is unsure, that replacing the GDI fuel pump will resolve the issue.

Description of Incident: The car was sold with a passenger-front Dunlop tire that suffered a critical structural failure where the tread rubber completely wore away, leaving the internal metal cords and plies exposed (visual evidence attached). I was unknowingly operating the vehicle in this hazardous condition for 136 miles of highway and local driving until the defect was fully identified on February 14th. Component Availability: The tire was removed from the vehicle on February 14th by an independent service center during the emergency purchase of four new tires. While the physical tire was left for disposal at the service center, high-resolution photographs of the failure are available and attached to this report for inspection. Safety Risk: The vehicle was sold in an unsafe and illegal condition (IL Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/12-405). The exposed structural metal plies created an imminent risk of a high-speed blowout or catastrophic tread separation, endangering both the occupants of my vehicle and other motorists. Confirmation/Inspection: The problem was confirmed by a certified technician at an independent service center on February 14th, who identified the tire as unfit for service. The selling dealer (Jidd Motors) was notified of a defect on February 6th but refused to replace the tire. This incident has also been reported to the Illinois Attorney General and the Illinois Secretary of State Police (Dealer Operations). Warning Symptoms: There were no warning lamps, TPMS messages, or symptoms prior to the physical discovery of the exposed metal. The tire maintained air pressure despite the severe structural compromise.

What Owners Are Saying
"What would your finance payments be compare to the lease? 15k is going to impact that payment a bit and the 24 months also. I would think a 36 month would have a lower payment. I was a top Genesis salesperson in my region when I was with the brand, but I've been removed for a while so I can't really speak to the quality of the deal. Someone else here mentioned the structure/other figures involved are important in determining that. Generally 24 month lease payments suck. If you expect to drive that many miles a lease may be the better way to go, but if you'd to own the car for a longer term it's more affordable to buy it than it is to lease it then buy it out. If you're going to drive higher miles than that, I'd buy it not lease it. As for the car itself - my favorite car I've ever owned was my 21 Prestige 3.5T in tasman blue with blue interior. I had a circle plan purchase as an employee and the manufacturer wanted the car on the road so it was a fantastic deal. Only reason I don't have it today is I had the opportunity to take a little more than 10k of equity by selling it and felt irresponsible passing that up. I think I ended up netting out positive on the payments in my time in the car due to used car values being so high during covid. Was it a perfect luxury sedan? It doesn't have as engaging a drive as a BMW 3 series, but I found it much more comfortable than a 5 series and personally enjoyed the drive more too. My other personal favorite competitor would have been an A6/A7 which were fairly more expensive with fewer standard offerings. At that time especially the"
"I own a ‘24 G80 that I am currently selling because of the lack of customer service and consideration. It is a luxury car without a luxury experience. Great if you have no issues. This is my 4th Genesis so I have been a loyal Genesis fan and customer over the years, but out of principle can’t support a company who can’t provide the services they sell when you bought the car. I would stay away personally."
"There's no secret why the G70, along with the G80 and G90, aren't selling. There are very few dealers out there. For example, there are a total of zero in California. Most people in major cities throughout the country are minimally hundreds of miles away from a Genesis dealer. I live in Los Angeles and my closest dealer is in Las Vegas. I'm in the market for a G70 Sport Manual but I can't reasonably buy one."
