Buyer brief · 240 words

The 2026 Genesis G80 Electrified packs 300 miles of EPA range, 187 kW fast charging and a 83 kWh battery, and a mid-pack composite means the records-and-test-drive call matters more than the headline.

Score read

A 68/100 makes this worth comparing, not chasing. The useful split is battery-health score at 82/100 versus owner feedback score at 47/100. On Reddit, owner satisfaction comes up enough that it's worth verifying before you sign. If the seller cannot show recall completion, price that risk or move on.

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Verify Owner feedback is the part to read carefully (47/100).

Mitigation Read the complaint themes and ask whether this VIN has already had those issues repaired.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 300-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 10-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Read the complaint themes, not just the count, and ask the seller whether those issues have shown up on this VIN.

The Financing Room · What Actually Happens

Dealers make ~$3,575 on the average car loan.

After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.

01 · Without pre-approval
Rate markup

78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB

With pre-approval ↓
Rate is already locked

Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.

02 · Without pre-approval

"What's your monthly budget?"

Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg

With pre-approval ↓
One number to negotiate

Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.

03 · Without pre-approval
+$1,775
GAP + extended warranty upsell

Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy

With pre-approval ↓
You can shop it or skip it

Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.

04 · Without pre-approval
Yo-yo / spot delivery

"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending

With pre-approval ↓
Financing already closed

A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.

Campaign #26V019000

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain Genesis 2025-2026 G80, GV80, 2026 G80 "Electrified," GV60, GV70 "Electrified" and GV70 vehicles. Due to a software error, the instrument panel display may fail. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101, "Controls and Displays."

An instrument panel display that fails to show critical safety information, such as the speedometer or fuel gauge, increases the risk of a crash.

The car was purchased on [XXX]. On [XXX]—only six days after purchasing the car—it failed to accelerate through an intersection while turning left in front of oncoming cars. Less than a week later, on [XXX], the car again failed to accelerate as it slowed down entering a rotary on [XXX]. The same thing happened again on [XXX] as it was driven out of the Savannah Bend Marina, turning left onto [XXX], and yet again on [XXX] while driving around a traffic circle on [XXX]. On [XXX], the car once again failed to accelerate when attempting to clear an intersection on [XXX] Pooler, a Savannah suburb. On [XXX], after starting the car in the garage, it obviously had a problem running while idling. Backing out of the carport and pulling out onto the street, it barely responded. Even after the accelerator was practically floored, the car would go only about 35 miles per hour. On [XXX], the car yet again delayed in accelerating while turning left onto [XXX] from [XXX]. As it turned left and the accelerator was pressed down, the car slowly inched forward for a few seconds before finally accelerating and clearing the intersection, barely averting a collision with oncoming traffic. The dealership has had multiple attempts to repair the defect, but it has been unable to locate or remedy the defect. This is a follow-up to complaint #11714226 regarding an ongoing safety defect. The defect has now resulted in a crash. The vehicle experiences repeated unintended braking at highway speeds (50–79 mph) without driver input and with no obstacles present. During multiple events, the steering becomes temporarily unresponsive or “locked,” preventing driver control. The vehicle has also exhibited unintended lane departures, erratic lane changes, and unexpected acceleration following braking. Warning indicators including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking, Driver Attention Warning, Lane Assist, and Master Warning have illuminated without cause. This vehicle has been presented three times for repair attempts specifically for these braking and steering systems and has been out of service over 30 cumulative days. The manufacturer was unable to duplicate or repair the defect and returned the vehicle unrepaired. On March 12, 2026, Genesis Corporate (Case Manager Terrence) stated they were coordinating with Genesis of Selma to schedule a fourth repair attempt. However, on March 26, 2026, Mike at Selma Genesis stated via text: “We as a dealer won’t be working on your car.” This directly contradicts Genesis Corporate and has prevented further repair attempts. On [XXX], while traveling approximately 55 mph, the vehicle experienced a sudden loss of steering control combined with unintended braking, causing it to leave the roadway and collide with pistachio trees. Law enforcement responded. I sustained back and neck pain and sought medical care. The defect remains unresolved and poses a serious risk of injury or death. Safety Jan 28, 2026

While driving at highway speeds (55–73 mph), the vehicle has repeatedly and unexpectedly applied the brakes on its own and on at least one occasion experienced a loss of power. These events occurred without any vehicles, pedestrians, or obstacles present, and without any driver input. Road and weather conditions did not warrant braking. On multiple occasions, the vehicle suddenly decelerated while adaptive cruise control was engaged, then immediately re-accelerated back to the set speed. This created a serious risk of being rear-ended or involved in a high-speed collision. On one occasion, the vehicle experienced a loss of power while driving at highway speed, requiring immediate driver intervention to avoid a dangerous situation. These incidents make the vehicle feel unpredictable and unsafe to operate as intended. I regularly transport family members, and these failures place my safety and the safety of others at significant risk of serious injury or death. The vehicle has been inspected by an authorized Genesis dealership on two separate occasions. Despite extended road testing, the dealership has stated they were unable to reproduce the issue and no permanent repair has been performed. The manufacturer has been notified, and the defect remains unresolved. No warning lights or messages were present prior to the incidents. The failures occur suddenly and without advance indication.

I am submitting this report to document a serious and dangerous safety defect involving my Genesis G70. Note - Your system pulls my VIN as a G80, I own a G70. On two separate occasions, the vehicle applied braking without driver input and abruptly veered to the left, despite there being no obstacles, vehicles, or road hazards present. During the first incident, the vehicle was operating in Comfort mode with Lane Assist enabled. During the second incident, the vehicle was operating in Sport mode with Lane Assist disabled. In both cases, the braking felt as though it was applied to the front-left wheel, causing an immediate and forceful deviation of the vehicle to the left. Both incidents occurred while the vehicle was traveling at speed and required immediate corrective action. I was forced to divert the vehicle onto the shoulder to avoid a potential collision. My family was present in the vehicle at the time. Had there been a vehicle in the adjacent left lane during either event, a collision would have been unavoidable. No warnings, alerts, or visual indicators were displayed prior to or during either incident EXCEPT late / after or during about Checking Lane Safety Warning There were no objects, lane intrusions, or traffic conditions that would justify autonomous braking or steering intervention. I am reporting this issue as a critical safety defect that poses a serious risk of collision, injury, or fatality. I am also reporting the issue to my authorized dealer, Global Auto Mall (Route 22, North Plainfield, NJ), for immediate inspection and diagnosis. I am aware of other similar reports involving this behavior and believe this issue warrants investigation. I am submitting this complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to document the defect and to help prevent potential injury or loss of life.

What Owners Are Saying

"What would your finance payments be compare to the lease? 15k is going to impact that payment a bit and the 24 months also. I would think a 36 month would have a lower payment. I was a top Genesis salesperson in my region when I was with the brand, but I've been removed for a while so I can't really speak to the quality of the deal. Someone else here mentioned the structure/other figures involved are important in determining that. Generally 24 month lease payments suck. If you expect to drive that many miles a lease may be the better way to go, but if you'd to own the car for a longer term it's more affordable to buy it than it is to lease it then buy it out. If you're going to drive higher miles than that, I'd buy it not lease it. As for the car itself - my favorite car I've ever owned was my 21 Prestige 3.5T in tasman blue with blue interior. I had a circle plan purchase as an employee and the manufacturer wanted the car on the road so it was a fantastic deal. Only reason I don't have it today is I had the opportunity to take a little more than 10k of equity by selling it and felt irresponsible passing that up. I think I ended up netting out positive on the payments in my time in the car due to used car values being so high during covid. Was it a perfect luxury sedan? It doesn't have as engaging a drive as a BMW 3 series, but I found it much more comfortable than a 5 series and personally enjoyed the drive more too. My other personal favorite competitor would have been an A6/A7 which were fairly more expensive with fewer standard offerings. At that time especially the infotainment system was second to none. It had a lot of character though and I still think Genesis has some of the user experience with the technology and infotainment though the other luxury offerings have started catching up a little bit there. The G80 has a very nice balance of driveability, tech, and comfort. I also think it's gorgeous. I would absolutely buy another G80 if I still worked at a Hyundai/Genesis store. There's a Hyundai store next to my Toyota store, and seeing them every day has made me miss my car."

"I own a ‘24 G80 that I am currently selling because of the lack of customer service and consideration. It is a luxury car without a luxury experience. Great if you have no issues. This is my 4th Genesis so I have been a loyal Genesis fan and customer over the years, but out of principle can’t support a company who can’t provide the services they sell when you bought the car. I would stay away personally."

"There's no secret why the G70, along with the G80 and G90, aren't selling. There are very few dealers out there. For example, there are a total of zero in California. Most people in major cities throughout the country are minimally hundreds of miles away from a Genesis dealer. I live in Los Angeles and my closest dealer is in Las Vegas. I'm in the market for a G70 Sport Manual but I can't reasonably buy one."
