Is a low score bad?
Not always. A low score flags items to verify before buying — and often signals stronger value, since heavier discounts already price the risk in. See TrimIndex’s pre-purchase inspection →

2026 Rivian R1T Performance Dual Large (20in): a mid-pack composite means the records-and-test-drive call matters more than the headline.

Score read

A 76/100 makes this worth pursuing if the price is sane. The useful split is software and driver-assist score at 100/100 versus owner feedback score at 50/100. On Reddit, owner satisfaction comes up enough that it's worth verifying before you sign. A good score still needs a battery report, service history, and a normal test drive.

Price context

Bring your own comps Pull current comps before negotiating

This trim started from $79,990 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.

Who this is for

✓ Good for

  • Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging
  • Road tripper Long trips, needs DC fast network
  • Weekend driver Performance, fun, low mileage

✗ Avoid if you are a

  • $
Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation

Gotchas

  • Verify Owner feedback is the part to read carefully (50/100).

Mitigation Read the complaint themes and ask whether this VIN has already had those issues repaired.

  • Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.

Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 300-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 2 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 3 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 4 Read the complaint themes, not just the count, and ask the seller whether those issues have shown up on this VIN.
  • 5 Review title, service history, tire condition, and charging-equipment records before final price.

Price needs outside confirmation Current market pricing is incomplete, so MSRP should not be used as the deal signal. Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for this exact trim.

The Financing Room · What Actually Happens

Dealers make ~$3,575 on the average car loan.

After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.

01 · Without pre-approval
Rate markup

78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB

With pre-approval ↓
Rate is already locked

Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.

02 · Without pre-approval
+$1,800
"What's your monthly budget?"

Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg

With pre-approval ↓
One number to negotiate

Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.

03 · Without pre-approval
+$1,775
GAP + extended warranty upsell

Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy

With pre-approval ↓
You can shop it or skip it

Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.

04 · Without pre-approval
Yo-yo / spot delivery

"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending

With pre-approval ↓
Financing already closed

A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.

Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

"2 Months. 3500 Miles Later // Rivian R1T Thoughts, Concerns & Prayers (Review/First Impression) Two months ago my life changed for the better when I got my R1T. Let me just say; I love this truck, I love this truck, I love this truck. The R1T is also my first-ever EV. After two months and 3500 miles, I'm here to tell you all that I have loved, hated, and everything in between. I hope this can be helpful for anyone who is considering making the jump to the Rivian family / EV world. Last Vehicle: 2020 Ford Escape SE Hybrid Rivian Config: 2023 Rivian R1T, Adv. Pkg., Quad Motor, Ocean Coast/Dark Ash Wood, Rivian Blue, 21" Wheels **First Thoughts** \-Wow. This truck is stunning. I never did a First Mile (I know that was dumb, but I recommend everyone do a First Mile). But holy cow the inside of this truck is a work of art. \-Dang, this thing is Fast!! Pulling out of the SC and first time letting loose a little and Holy S&#%! This is a truck that drives like a sports car. \-The sound system is incredible. I love listening to music in this rig, it just sounds so good. \-Love my color/interior combo. Definitely a little worried about keeping it clean in the long run, but I'm hopeful. **Pros** \-The acceleration. This truck has made me a speed demon. You'll love showing off launches to your friends, but no one ever talks about all the solo launches you'll do owning this thing. Definitely have broken my previous land speed record as well. On a practical level, the truck's acceleration is great when you need to speed up and pass someone or get to speed on an on-ramp. \"

"Consumer Reports and Rivian owners The most recent CR study of cars showed some interesting results: Rivian was the only brand which scored 5/5 in “would you buy again?” question—no other brand earned that high a score. On the other hand, those same owners were brutally honest regarding defects and issues with their cars. The “predicted reliability” scores for R1T and R1S (especially) were not good. For context: This is not JD Power, it’s more or less restricted to CR readers. But the same people who expressed such enthusiasm for buying another Rivian didn’t pull their punches in expressing frustrations and disappointments with their R1. A brand with a broader product line is most likely going to have more noise in their numbers—the fact Rivian is limited currently to the R1 models may provide an advantage in these results. Still, the enthusiasm of the owners bodes well for Rivian. They will be the evangelists for the brand and help boost awareness and positive public image."
