Buyer brief · 245 words

The 2024 Subaru Solterra AWD is rated at 227 miles of EPA range, 100 kW fast charging and a 64 kWh battery, and the score gets it into the conversation; battery and service records decide whether to make an offer.

Score read

A 68/100 makes this a paperwork-and-test-drive decision. Software and driver-assist score is 100/100, but range and efficiency score is only 43/100. Owners on Reddit repeatedly cite owner satisfaction and software tech as recurring problems. Treat missing repair records as a price problem, not a footnote.

Price context

Used examples are running around $25,327. Treat that as a budgeting floor, not a final price; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase or Edmunds True Market Value for this exact trim before negotiating.

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (43/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 227-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 10-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Back Over Prevention — Display Function
Campaign #25V744000

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."

A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

2 Items: 1st is the facial recognition camera, which causes the vehicle to stop if it can't see the driver. The recognition camera has often indicated an inability to see my face or my wife's face when she has been driving. On June 30th when returning home from work I had the driver's window open with bright sunlight, which fell fully on the camera, which totally failed to see my face, stopping the vehicle in traffic suddenly. (Fortunately, it was near a traffic light which had just turned red, so traffic had already slowed down.) I then noticed, in the bright light on the camera surface a streak of multiple fine scratches across the whole face of the camera screen. I shut the window, which reduced the light hitting the camera, and it recognized me again, allowing me to drive again. Other than in bright light, the scratches are hardly apparent. Now that I know they are there, I can see a very subtle shade difference where they are. 2nd Item: The forward collision warning occasionally brakes, showing a vehicle ahead when there is no vehicle ahead, and conversely, when set to speed control assist, it sometimes does not see a vehicle ahead or show one on the screen when there is one, sometimes speeding up to within a dangerous closeness of the vehicle ahead. It seems to be happening at a frequency of about 2 to 3 times every 100 miles, slightly more often with the braking and showing a car image on the screen when there is no vehicle ahead.

During a large rainstorm [XXX] in Colorado Springs, CO when driving through water amid the downpour, the front fabric like wheel well liners came loose and caught underneath the vehicle causing the front plastic undercarriage cover to also come loose. Despite the rain and lightning, and to mitigate any further damage to the vehicle or safety risks to occupants, pulled over and removed the dragging covers from underneath the vehicle. Reasonable threat of danger to occupants and further damage to vehicle if continued to drive. Not removing these would have had made vehicle completely undriveable or debris could have caused risk to other vehicles on roadway. Vehicle was just acquired last month for Subaru dealership in Colorado Springs, CO. Vehicle was dropped off the morning of [XXX] at the same dealership’s service department for further analysis and remediation. Unsure if covered under warranty (really needs to be). Concerned about winter driving and moisture causing the same damage and risk. Also contacted USAA insurance on options. Awaiting resolution from local dealership. Publicly available information suggests that this problem is or has happened to others during rain events and has not been covered under warranty. Suggest manufacturer be held to repair and remediate issue under warranty with more durable parts. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Battery Dec 15, 2025

On December 15, 2025, driving on a highway in low temperatures, my 2024 Subaru Solterra (VIN: [XXX] ) experienced a progressive loss of power. At 9:20 a.m., I departed NYC for Amenia, NY (91 miles). The range showed ~130 miles (no AC). For the first ~70 miles, the range indicator consistently remained higher than miles-to-destination, confirming sufficient charge to arrive safely. Around mile 70, the range buffer diminished rapidly. By 10:52 a.m. (approx. 85 miles in), the vehicle stopped responding normally to the accelerator. Speed became limited to 36–40 mph. The panel displayed: “Traction battery empty, Output power reduced.” However, immediately next to this warning, the dashboard displayed "7 mi" range and 4% battery. Relying on this data—which indicated sufficient range to reach a safe location—I continued. This contradictory information prevented an informed safety decision. Vehicle behavior became unstable. At 11:01 a.m., I pulled to the shoulder and called roadside assistance. After this stop, the vehicle appeared to recover traction, so I attempted to reach destination (6 miles away). However, unreliable power delivery persisted and the vehicle eventually failed completely at 11:25 a.m., leaving me stranded. Towing arrived at 2:00 p.m. This incident involves a critical range estimation failure. The vehicle promised 130 miles but failed after ~85 miles of conservative driving—a ~35% discrepancy. Furthermore, erratic behavior and conflicting data (showing available range while warning "Empty",) misled me into believing the vehicle was safe to operate, leaving me stranded in winter conditions on an active roadway. I am writing to file a formal safety complaint regarding my 2024 Subaru Solterra. On 09 Aug 2025, while driving, my vehicle displayed “EV System Malfunction” and “Drive Start Control Malfunction” alerts simultaneously. Although the vehicle was still drivable, this combination of warnings is alarming, as it suggests a possible high-voltage system fault or drive control failure. The AC is not working too. I am deeply concerned for the following reasons: 1. Safety Risk: These faults could lead to sudden loss of power or prevent the vehicle from restarting after a stop, potentially leaving me stranded in unsafe conditions. 2. Loss of Confidence: This is an unacceptable failure in a nearly new vehicle. I have lost trust in its reliability and safety. 3. Potential Widespread Issue: Other Solterra owners have reported similar warnings online, suggesting this may be a systemic defect requiring urgent investigation. I expect a formal case number for this complaint and a written response outlining Subaru’s plan to resolve this matter.

I have had the car since December of 2024, the car was a new lease. The battery has failed twice - once in January, and again last week. This has left me stranded twice, the battery failure occurs with no warning, it is running one hour, and the next it is dead. When I took it to the dealership, they said they replaced the battery, the new battery is now doing the same thing. The car also misleads the driver - upon putting the car on the charger, the car notifies how many hours it will take to charge, the data is wrong, it takes many hours longer that what the car says it will take to reach a full charge.

I purchased the 2024 Subaru Solterra in May of 2024, had no issues with the vehicle. In late June my cell phone was hacked, and malicious malware was installed, confirmed by my phone provided. Soon after that the vehicle started displaying signs of possibly being infected as well. Safety setting were changed, the vehicle was doing things I had not experienced and was difficult to control. I contacted Subaru after an incident that occurred on [XXX], Albany NY, where the vehicle facial recognition was activated without my knowledge and began displaying warning signs, beeps and demanding I sit up. The vehicle was fighting with me to stay in my lane and was slowing down on its own. When I brought the vehicle to Subaru in Albany NY, I was met with a group of people to include an engineer, Brendan spent over an hour trying to figure out two suspicious accounts connected to the vehicle, he called them 'the hackers". I was also told by one of the women that even know it was a scary situation for me, bringing this to the attention of Subaru, could prevent "future hacking of these vehicles". The technician was unable to figure out the accounts that were link to the vehicle nor could he remove them after multiple attempts, he would remove them and reconnect my account, and then they would pop back up and disconnect my account. I was told I needed to have my phone replaced as it was the source of the malware. I had phone replace with no improvement, just continuing safety issues with no help from Subaru. Over the last few months there has been multiple malfunctions and glitches within the vehicle, vehicle has shut itself off four times while it was running, lights have turned off while driving, warning message to hit brake while on highway, monitor screens go black and not able to see how the vehicle is operating, nor can I see my speed or warning signs. I have video of at least five safety incidents. Subaru has denied any responsibility or solution. DEATHTRAP INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATIO

"Our Solterra is the best AWD in snow that I have ever driven, and we have had Subarus before. It must be because of the extra weight of the battery. But also, the AWD system is totally electric/computerized and it's amazing. I have a damn steep dirt driveway and a lot of other cars AWD cars can't even do it. With the Solterra, I don't even have to plow if i don't want to."

"From what I understand, Subaru Canada discounted $6,500 mainly to bring the Base and Luxury trims below $50,000 to qualify for Canada’s $5,000 Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) incentive. That would be a total savings of $11,500 before any dealer discount. The Solterra isn’t being discontinued and fire saled. As an old guy, let me just say if this is the most expensive financial mistiming you ever make you will be lucky. Welcome to the forum and enjoy your Solterra. #3· Apr 11, 2026 I feel your concern. As a 2017 Outback owner, I was interested in the soon to arrive Trail Seeker, but as an experienced car buyer, I prefer to wait until a new model has been on the market for a few years to let the bugs shake out. So, as it was the closest thing to our Outback, I purchased the 2026 Solterra a few days ago as it met my criteria. The incentives and 0% financing sealed the deal."

"I purchased a Solterra AWD in Canada a few months ago. I had already decided to buy an electric car, and being a former owner of a Subaru Forester, the choice of the Solterra was influenced by loyalty to the brand and a good relationship with the dealership. My first impressions were very positive. The comfort provided by an electric car puts it on par with premium cars. The car's solidity and the way it manages and reports electricity consumption, even in winter, gave me confidence to take trips with my family, even in temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius. Compared to other EVs, it became evident that software development is lagging behind, but it's still possible to get by through applications like ABRP. What I had the most difficulty with during the trip was the operation of the battery preheating system. The manual is unclear about how long the preheating needs to be activated before reaching the supercharger, nor what the minimum battery level is at which the system can be activated. Therefore, I was happy with the purchase and the experience remained positive due to the comfort, the car's solidity, and the brand's reliability."

"Solterra a grey market vehicle?? I have a 2023 Subaru solterra and we are currently shopping for home owners and auto insurance for our new home. While doing this I found progressive had the best rates but it wouldn’t allow me to input my vin or select a 2023 (or even a 2024) solterra for quotes. I ended up making a quote based on a 2025 to get an idea and then called to discuss the issue. After an hour on the phone progressive told me my car is an import (it was bought and leased at a US dealership) and is a “grey market vehicle”. Because of this they have to go off a stated value for insurance since they can’t determine a value. But after going further, they can’t insure me since it’s a grey market vehicle and 2 years or newer. So there were zero options. In 2026 I could potentially, but it sounds like 2023 or 2024 solterra’s can’t be insured until they are over 2 years old. But they stated this isn’t an issue with the 2025 solterra? Has anyone heard of this? It hasn’t been an issue with any other insurance provider. Also, many vehicles are produced in other countries then sold in the US?? I just don’t understand the issue and guess I’m upset because their insurance was going to be $500-600 cheaper than other options with equal coverages. Edit - As I said I did spend an hour on the phone with an actual agent who told me they can’t help me and there were zero options."

"fyi - new recall (for parking ECU) FWIW when I brought my car in for the known HVAC reprogramming recall (WRD-25) the dealer told me there’s a brand new recall for “Solterra Parking Assist ECU reprogramming” software that came out yesterday (WRE-25) … so they’re going to try and do that one at same time. I don’t know the number or any more details; he said it came out 2 days ago. Right now there seems to be no remedy. There’s a stop sale in place now. If this happens, the rearview image may not display when the transmission is shifted into reverse. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the vehicle is reversing. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with a panoramic view monitor system. Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that doesn't display correctly could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. "However, everything changed last month when Subaru Canada applied a huge discount to the Solterra. I'm not naive enough to ignore the possibility of a discount in a near future, given the volatility of the EV market. However, I didn't expect this amount of discount to be applied to a newly launched model. The result is that on top of the usual depreciation of a new car, there's now an additional capital loss associated with the discounts the brand is applying, amounting to 6,500 as of this writing. I even suspected that the Solterra might be being discontinued it because it is mentioned in the website mention that the discounts are valid while supplies last. When I questioned Subaru Canada, the response was evasive, mentioning that the model will remain on the website. Well, I apologize if my initial review wasn't entirely positive. I'll continue to use this forum to share experiences about the car and try to regain confidence in the brand. #1· Mar 27, 2026 I'm introducing myself to the forum and I have some mixed feelings about buying the Solterra."

"We have had ours for a good 3+ years 44k miles. The only issue is really that when it is very cold, the range comes down quite a bit. The trailseeker also looks interesting, which is a little bigger I think. Essentially looks like the same car but slightly bigger but I don't know if that is exactly true. Also if the trail seeker has any higher ground clearance it might be worth looking at. The AWD system is perfectly fine. Zero issues. Obviously you need good tires no matter what. On your class IV road, you may need to engage X mode at some point, but I've yet to have to do it. the solterra to me seems ever so slightly FWD biased... versus other Subaru are slightly RWD biased, but I can't honestly tell the difference other than slightly higher tire wear on the front with the solterra. A couple of quirks for me. The rear passenger doors do not open 90 degrees like Subarus which sort of drives me nuts. I'd really like to see rear camera washers on every car but this one doesn't seem to have it as far as I know. Maybe newer ones do."
