Buyer brief · 236 words

The 2025 GMC Sierra EV packs 390 miles of EPA range, 350 kW fast charging and a 190 kWh battery, and a worth-pursuing score, but only after a hard inspection and a fair price.

Score read

A 63/100 makes this a records-first inspection. The useful split is software and driver-assist score at 95/100 versus build quality score at 42/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: owner satisfaction and range. If the seller cannot show recall completion, price that risk or move on.

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 390-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.

I am reporting a serious safety issue involving unintended acceleration in my vehicle. The vehicle accelerates unexpectedly without driver input (specifically without pressing the “resume” function), requiring immediate braking to regain control. This issue has occurred numerous times over the past 4–5 months. Incidents have primarily happened at low speeds (approximately 20–25 mph or less), including while making turns, exiting parking lots, and once in our yard, where the vehicle nearly struck our home. The problem has occurred both when adaptive cruise control was active and when it was turned off. In the most recent incident, adaptive cruise control was off, and the vehicle suddenly accelerated while traveling in about 20–25 mph on the main street. The driver had to apply the brakes forcefully to avoid a collision with the vehicle in front. There have been no warning lights, alerts, or messages prior to these events. During at least one incident, a “braking required” message appeared only after the unintended acceleration had already begun. The vehicle has been taken to a GMC dealership multiple times, but the issue has not been duplicated by them. The dealer suggested the possibility of accidental activation of the “resume” button; however, this did not occur. The vehicle is currently at the dealership (since April 6) and is available for inspection. This defect presents a significant safety hazard to the occupants of the vehicle and to others on the road.

Component / System Failure The exhaust system, specifically the exhaust manifolds and previously the EGR system components, appear to have failed or malfunctioned, allowing exhaust gases to enter the passenger cabin. The dealer initially replaced the EGR cooler diverter on December 23, 2025. However, the condition persisted. On February 3, 2026, cracked exhaust manifolds were identified by the dealership, and a major front-end teardown was advised to complete the repair. The vehicle is currently available for inspection upon request. ⸻ How Safety Was Put at Risk The malfunction allowed exhaust gases, including carbon monoxide, to enter the passenger cabin during vehicle operation. Carbon monoxide readings inside the cabin reached up to 50 parts per million (ppm) while driving. Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that can cause: •Headaches •Dizziness •Impaired concentration •Nausea •Vision disturbances Because carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, this presents a significant safety risk, particularly at highway speeds where driver alertness is critical. The exposure occurred while operating the vehicle in normal driving conditions. This created a potential risk of driver impairment and increased risk of collision. ⸻ Has the Problem Been Reproduced or Confirmed? Yes. The vehicle was presented to the dealership three times for the same exhaust intrusion concern: •December 16, 2025 •December 29, 2025 •February 3, 2026 During the February 3 visit, the dealership confirmed cracked exhaust manifolds requiring major disassembly for repair. The carbon monoxide readings were observed during vehicle operation. The exhaust odor and intrusion symptoms were consistently present following the first attempted repair. ⸻ Has the Vehicle Been Inspected by Manufacturer or Others? The vehicle has been inspected by the authorized dealership on multiple occasions. Two manufacturer customer care cases were opened.

Picked up vehicle from Dealership new, with 12miles on the odometer. During the trip home (over 150+ miles each way) and at 54 miles a "Forward Collision System Unavailable" warning message appeared on the dash. Stopped for coffee and restarted the vehicle and the error cleared. It re-appeared at 235 miles, and again at 427 miles along with an OBD error P0700 @cycle#763, Occurrence Cycle #2608. Returned the Vehicle to the dealership service department for repairs. The vehicle was returned and we took the truck on our first trip to Yosemite and while driving it the cruise control released the throttle times driving on a 4 lane Hwy 152. Then on the backside of Pancho Pass we entered the town of Los Banos. While driving in a 45 MPH section of Hwy 152, with no other cars in front or behind us, the truck performed an emergency stop. It applied the brakes at maximum force causing the front to dive hard and the rear tires to lose traction with the antilock cycling the brakes on and off, causing them to slip bringing the truck to a stop. At no time did the dash or the HUD display flash the collision warning or any error messages, I applied throttle and moved the Truck off the Hwy to the side of the road. Checked all pages on the dash for any indication of problems, and we drove to a parking lot inspecting the truck top to bottom to see if there were any obstructions, damage to the bumper sensors, or windshield. Returned the Truck to the dealership a second time for repairs. Received the vehicle back and during the drive home we Stopped for Dinner in San Jose and the "Forward Collision System Unavailable" returned again. Returned the vehicle for service a third time and notified Manufacture of the issues. This is a Major safety defect that GM cannot seem to repair. Current mileage of vehicle 3098.

While driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic, my vehicle suddenly lost all engine power, the accelerator became unresponsive and the dash indicated "press start". There were no warning lights, no messages, and no prior symptoms before the failure occurred. I was in an active traffic lane when this happened, which immediately placed me and others at risk of being rear-ended. After several seconds, and pressing the start button, the vehicle regained power. But the odometer was indicating I was going 30+ mph when I was going less than 10 mph, so I pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle is also was having issues with the lane keeping assistance was unavailable. This is is a new vehicle purchase directly from the dealer in August 2025, with approximately 4,500 miles at the time of the incident that occurred on, 11/18. The problem has not been reproduced by the dealership, and no diagnostic trouble codes were found. The vehicle has been at the dealer for inspection since 11/20, but I was informed that the issue would need to happen again before they could diagnose it. This type of sudden power loss while driving is a serious safety concern, especially because it occurred without warning and could happen again unpredictably. At this time, the cause it UNKNOWN, but the component or system responsible for the power loss should be inspected. The failure appears to be intermittent and without warning.

weekly you will start the truck and have no audio of any kind. No blinker noises no collision warning noises, no radio, no on star noise. No sound at all and sound will never come back on until you turn truck off and wait 20 mins. GMC says it's a known software issue, but this has been going on since I bought the truck brand new back is April of 2025. I live in a hands free while driving state when it's come to cell phone use and can't even take a call with no audio of any kind. I don't see how GMC can say this isn't a safety issue.

My vehicle is equipped with multiple safety systems offered by general motors. Since purchasing my vehicle new, I have had a persistent and recurring issue related to the vehicle safety system, which is resulted in numerous collision detection and advanced cruise control service is not functioning as designed, creating safety issues for both myself and potentially other motorist on the road. Additionally, the parking sensors are not working as expected, presumably due to the same issue, which has resulted in numerous safety concerns, including the detection of vehicles or objects, which were not present, resulting in the systematic breaking function engaging posing a risk to myself and surrounding motorists. I initially reported the issue to GM on 2/20/2025, when the vehicle had 467 miles on the odometer. Since the issue initially began, I have returned to the GM service department at my local dealer a total of seven (7) times. The local service department has been in contact with GM corporate office related to the issue, however, they have been unable to rectify the issue and continue to send the vehicle back out on the road claiming the issue has been resolved only for it to recur shortly thereafter. I believe that GM providing the safety features in an inoperable state poses great risk to the general public, and the NHTSA should investigate this issue alongside the other active systemic issues GM is currently under investigation of. At this time, it is unknown what is the cause of the issue, multiple parts have been replaced, and the true cause of the issue has been undiagnosed.

I purchased a 2025 GMC Denali a few months ago. At approximately 7,000 miles, the front brakes failed unexpectedly and were replaced by the dealership. However, by 14,000 miles, I began experiencing brake issues again. Before I could return the vehicle for service, I was driving on the turnpike when the engine suddenly seized without warning. This created an extremely dangerous situation—vehicles behind me nearly collided as I lost power and control. I managed to pull over safely, but the tow truck operator struggled to load the vehicle due to all four wheels locking up and the engine being completely seized. Once the vehicle was inspected at the dealership, I was informed that the engine had failed and would need to be replaced. I am aware of the recurring issues associated with the 6.2L GMC engines and related component failures, and I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle. Given the repeated mechanical failures and the serious safety risks involved, I am formally requesting that GMC initiate a buyback of this vehicle. I believe this situation qualifies under lemon law protections and warranty obligations, and I urge GMC to take immediate action to resolve this matter.

On August 15th, 2025, I brought my new 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali to Bill Cramer GM Dealership, 2251 W 23rd St, Panama City, FL 32405, due to a complete loss of audio in the cabin. This affected the turn signals, radio, and critical safety alerts, including collision warnings and seatbelt reminders. Given the vehicle's high cost and its status as a new premium model, this malfunction was both disappointing and alarming, particularly due to its implications for safety. This occurs about every third time I drive the vehicle. The dealership retained my vehicle for over a week to diagnose and address the issue. I received an email stating that the service was complete and the truck was ready for pickup. However, upon arrival, a service technician informed me that they could not identify the cause of the audio failure and, consequently, no repairs were made. I was told the dealership would continue consulting with General Motors' corporate engineers to determine the cause and solution.

While towing my fifth wheel trailer, the truck intermittently disconnects the trailer brakes while in motion. This results in a sudden loss of roughly 75% of my braking capability, creating an extremely dangerous situation. I have a professional driving background, which has helped me avoid an accident so far, but this issue could easily result in a collision, especially under emergency braking or downhill conditions Service Attempt: On June 17, 2025, I brought the vehicle to Madras Chevrolet in Oregon. The dealership acknowledged the issue but stated the truck is “within GM parameters,” so no repairs were made. They claimed the problem might be with the trailer, but I’ve confirmed the trailer works properly with other tow vehicles. This appears to be a systemic electrical or control issue with the truck. Safety Concern: No vehicle should be allowed to disable trailer brakes while moving. This is a clear design or control system fault. I am concerned that other GMC or GM truck owners may be at similar risk and urge the NHTSA to investigate this problem before it results in serious injury or death. PS. The truck automatically engages the parking brake ONLY when on an incline, never at any other time. I am so used to engaging the parking brake at all other times I also engage it when on an incline. The problem is the truck DISENGAGES the brake automatically after I've engaged it. This has happened multiple times when I've been towing a large boat on a launch ramp or towing my heavy 5th wheel. I can be fully exited from the truck and 10 ft away when it disengages and I watch it lurch forward. Simple answer would be for me to not engage the brake on an incline, but its a total habit all the time so I never remember to not engage it on an incline. This is a dangerous feature that needs to be removed ASAP. Thank you

I stopped turned off the vehicle and restarted it and it continued this for the next few miles. Then just as suddenly as it started it stopped doing this and worked fine the rest of my trip.

Hose from power steering pump came off causing truck to loose power steering and brakes. Fortunately we had just exited the interstate and were in a parking lot when this occurred. Truck was towed 90 miles to dealer who confirmed that hose was incorrectly installed by factory

We noticed that the brakes were really soft. We literally had to push on the brakes with excessive force. We took it to Lynch - West Bend, WI for a service call and was told that nothing was wrong with it. After leaving the dealership we did our own research (the hubby is a certified master technician himself). Come to find out through GM, contacts through TBM brakes and Duramax Forum.com "brake pedal effort" we found the issue and a solution and we fixed it ourselves. This truck is brand spanking new and the dealership threw their hands in the air with a safety issue and let us drive out of the parking lot. Imagine driving away after being told no issue to end up in an accident due to failed brakes. Who's to blame for that? Certainly not the customer. It was only when the new car sales manager took the truck for a drive, he agreed that there was a problem. - too late we took it home and fixed it ourselves. This problem needs to be looked into seeing its a known issue!

Driving down interstate highway and sunroof “exploded”. Raising glass sunroof up about 2” above the body. Vehicle had 387 miles on it. This occurred at about 6:55 am and outside temperature was about 74 degrees. The rupture was loud and very startling and I exited the interstate pulling over to see what occurred. There was no damage whatsoever to any other body component and no “flying” debris was observed at anytime that could have struck the vehicle. I requested GMC dealer to look at onboard cameras and save video but they seemed dismissive. Had the interior sunroof shade not been closed I would have been showered in glass while driving.

While in the parking lot of a local grocery store, I shifted the vehicle into reverse, at which point all dashboard warning lights immediately illuminated and the braking response became significantly weakened and nearly unresponsive. I placed the vehicle back into park, paused, and then attempted to shift into reverse again, but the dashboard alerts and brake issue persisted. This created a very unsafe driving situation because the brake system was very unresponsive. Despite the unsafe condition, I cautiously drove to my home 2miles away at a speed of under 20 MPH, requiring excessive brake pressure to bring the vehicle to a stop. I parked the vehicle in my driveway and left it there overnight. The next morning, I tested the brakes, and they seemed to return to normal so I drove 5 miles to my local GMC service center. Service Tech confirmed Check Engine Light On and reported code P0700 and P00FF in the report.

My 2025 GMC Denali EV has experienced repeated safety-critical issues, including severe torque pull under acceleration, making it difficult to maintain safe lane position and compromising steering control. This behavior persists even after inspection and is documented on video. The vehicle has also had repeated service brake assist faults, including one critical failure at under 6,000 miles and additional incidents that resulted in me being stranded out of state. Additionally, I have experienced ghost braking while reversing, where the vehicle unexpectedly applies brake force even when parking assist features are manually disabled. I have performed comparative testing with an identical Denali EV loaner (same year and build), as well as three dealership test units, all of which exhibited proper steering stability and regenerative braking behavior. My vehicle’s issues are therefore not “normal operation” but clear, reproducible defects that affect both safety and expected vehicle performance. These issues raise major concerns for real-world safety scenarios requiring immediate acceleration (e.g., merging onto highways or avoiding fast-approaching vehicles). My documented comparative evidence and repeated attempts to have the defects addressed have not resulted in a safe resolution.

Safety Complaint – Delayed Acceleration from Automatic Engine Stop/Start I am reporting a safety concern regarding the automatic engine stop/start system in my GMC truck. During normal operation, the system shuts the engine off when the vehicle comes to a complete stop. When I release the brake and press the accelerator, there is a noticeable delay while the engine restarts before power is delivered to the wheels. This creates a hesitation between driver input and vehicle response. This delay presents a safety concern because it affects my ability to react quickly in situations that require immediate acceleration. I have experienced multiple real-world scenarios where this hesitation impacts safe operation: While stopped at an intersection preparing to turn, I observed oncoming traffic approaching faster than expected. When I attempted to accelerate to complete the turn, the delay caused by the engine restart reduced my ability to clear the intersection promptly. In stop-and-go traffic, I needed to move forward quickly to maintain safe spacing or respond to changing traffic conditions. The hesitation before acceleration limited my ability to react immediately. When pulling into traffic from a parking lot or side street, heavy traffic often creates small gaps that require prompt acceleration. Due to the delay in engine restart, it is difficult to accurately gauge and anticipate the truck’s response when pressing the accelerator. With this hesitation, safely merging into traffic in these conditions becomes extremely difficult and, at times, effectively impossible. In situations where a vehicle encroaches into my lane or a hazard develops unexpectedly, the delayed throttle response reduces my ability to maneuver out of the way quickly. This is not simply a convenience issue. The system introduces a delay between driver input and vehicle response, which can reduce reaction time in situations where immediate acceleration is necessary to avoid a potential hazard.

I was traveling on the I70 West around the 210 mile marker. I was in the passing lane at high speed when the vehicle without warning switched itself off. The dash showed the “press start” warning, but the vehicle would not restart. I was fortunate that I was around 1/2 a mile from a rest stop area. I was able to glide the vehicle into the rest area. As I slowed close to a stop the vehicle suddenly stopped and applied the park brake. I am a very experienced driver, if my wife was driving, the vehicle shutting down completely in the fast lane could have been catastrophic. The road was busy. The vehicle was locked up in Park and was unrecoverable. It had to be dragged sideways out of the area that it had come to a stop, and then dragged onto and off the tow truck. The following morning the dealership confirmed the engine was seized. When I purchased the vehicle, the dealership confirmed that the historic failures on the L87 6.2L V8 engine were resolved. Clearly not the case.

This happens many times, at random intervals, and sometimes it does not happen at all, but I would say about 33% of the time, it happens. When you put the vehicle into reverse, the side mirrors will lower slightly, so that its easy to see the ground, or parking lines, etc. When you then go back to park or forward gear, the mirrors are supposed to go back to the position they were earlier. The original starting point. But that's the problem, many times, they do not go back to the starting position and you must then push the preset buttons to make them go back to your desired view angle.

I was driving and the engine abruptly stalled. The truck self-shifted to Neutral. Once stopped, I shifted to Park to attempt a restart. It would not crank. I was on a 2-lane road so I did not have a shoulder. Once I realized it would not restart I tried to shift to Neutral so I could push it to a subdivision road about 50 yards away only to find out my transmission has no ability to shift to Neutral (the dealer confirmed this later). So I was stuck on the road for hours just over the crest of a hill with people coming up on me and my family at 50mph. It was a windy 10 degrees so we could not wait on the side of the road where we would have been safer. This is how people get killed; being stopped where people can't see you and do not expect you to be stopped. Why can I not get the truck off the road? If this happened on an 8-lane highway how would I get to a shoulder, even after traffic had stopped behind me? On top of all that, the problem with the truck ended up being an engine bearing failure (per the dealership service dept) that is a known problem with this engine and truck build date. General Motors needs to proactively diagnose and get these engines replaced before someone gets hurt. There is a TSB issued for the bearing issue but when I asked my dealer about it a month ago, before the failure, they acted like they knew nothing about it and told me to bring it in if I hear noises. If they had offered to check the crankshaft endplay when I asked about it ( as the TSB suggests), I may not have gotten stranded and my family's safety put at risk. There were no warning lamps, and no strange noises before the engine seized. My fuel economy had decreased by about 20% in the last month but that may be from cold weather operating conditions. I have a separate electrical issue that I've been chasing down and I assumed this stall condition was related to that. But the dealer confirmed this was a bearing failure.

I have the 6.2 L87 with the 10 speed transmission in my 2025 Sierra. At cold start, when auto stop restarts the truck, when the truck downshifts under 20 mph down to 12 mph the engine or transmission makes a chirping/squeak/squeal sounds. Several repair attempts have been made, parts replaced. According to GM and their “field engineer” this is a “normal characteristic of the dfm system”. They claim that it has to do with ignition timing. Not my first dfm truck, but it is the first to make this noise. There is not very many components in “the dfm system” that can make a metal on metal squeak/chirp/squeal sound other than lifters/pushrods, but the noise could be coming from the transmission/bell housing area. I am fairly certain this is an early warning sign of engine or transmission failure. Truck currently has 7,800 miles. If this was an actual “normal behavior” for this engine, all of them would make the same noise. But out of 7 other trucks with the same engine and transmission that i have started/drove, none of them made the noise. It has made this noise since i purchased it brand new. A Gm field engineer “looked” at the truck 3 weeks ago, and I still have not received any paperwork on what they actually did when diagnosing it. Not a single document from the dealership or GM, regarding the 4 days that my truck was at the dealership on the 4th repair attempt. Gm technical service bulletin I was referred to by the dealership is 22-NA-218 Will update this complaint when failure occurs.

"New Wheels/Tires for 2026 GMC Sierra 1500? Hey y’all! I just traded my car in for a new 2026 GMC Sierra 1500. So far, I’m very happy with the choice! I was looking into some visual upgrades for it. For now, I’m just focusing on wheels/tires and maybe a 2 inch level. I know for sure I want black wheels because, let’s be honest, the stock wheels aren’t that good looking! I’m mainly looking for y’all’s opinion on what wheel brands I should look into. Something that is the right blend of reliable and price efficient would be ideal (I don’t think I need forged wheels). I currently have 17 inch wheels with 265 tires on them, and I was told I could put up to 22 inch wheels and 285 tires on them. I think I’d be happy with 20s or 22s, and I’m fine with whatever width for the tire. I also want to make sure I can find the right shop who will do the job right. Meaning, they can install without harm, and they can put the TPMs back into the new wheels. The idea with this truck is just to look clean and mean, but I don’t want to stand out too much. Would love to hear y’all’s thoughts and advice on this! Happy to be a new member of the GMC family."

"2026 GMC Sierra Denali EV STANDARD range questions Hi folks, I have an opportunity to hop into my first EV truck (first EV at all) this weekend and trade in my old truck. I'm getting a sweet deal on a new '26 Sierra Denali standard range. Almost $8k below MSRP!! My biggest concern is the range mileage. It's estimated to have a range of 280 miles on a full charge. Daily charging (80%) would put me I assume around 220 miles of range. I drive about 100 miles daily, and I have no issue with plugging it up every night with a level 2 charger. I live in the DC-Metro area, so we do get cold during winters which I assume makes the battery range shorter. I'd like to pick someones brain about how many miles of range they get on average with a standard trim. I've researched the topic, but can't really find any real world answers. I'd like to know how many miles you drive on average, what is your truck saying you get miles wise on a 80% charge? How long does it take for your truck to get up to 80%? Does the standard battery charge faster than the extended or max versions since its a smaller battery? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks."

"Switching from GMC to Ford questions I am looking for opinions on the most reliable F-150 engine (2025 or 2026) I use my truck for daily commute to work and just hauling tools in the bed. I currently have a 2022 GMC sierra 2.7L i4 Turbo and I have had nothing but problems with it. (New transmission at 40k miles, new camshaft, rocket arms, about to need another transmission, etc...). Not sure how it lines up with the ford 2.7L. I was told that the GM 2.7L is more reliable right now compared to the 5.3 v8 and I was highly disappointed with the amount of engine and transmission issues I had. I know some people with the 3.5L v6 and they say it’s been good. How is the ford 2.7L v6? Any info helps as I'm not as familiar with Ford. Thanks!"

"EV pickup hype has fizzled and not just for Tesla Cybertruck By: Laurence Iliff June 04, 2025 04:00 AM Tesla CEO Elon Musk mocked traditional American pickups for their stale design and combustion powertrains during the 2019 unveiling of the wildly styled Cybertruck. It was one of several electric pickups attracting huge consumer interest and poised to transform one of the auto industry’s biggest segments. “Trucks have been the same for a very long time, like 100 years,” Musk said before a cheering audience. “We need something different.” At one point during the presentation, a fan yelled back to Musk, “Take my money.” And Tesla did. Refundable reservations of $100 to $250 for the Cybertruck reached over 1 million by the time the unpainted pickup went into production in late 2023, Musk said. He predicted annual sales of 250,000 to half a million. That didn’t happen. Instead, the Cybertruck — like EV pickups from Ford, Rivian and General Motors — mostly failed to convert early preorders into meaningful sales in the truck-loving U.S. While automakers saw EV pickups as a potentially lucrative addition to their lineups, their capabilities were a mismatch with many buyers, analysts said. High prices and limited range for towing and hauling, compared with combustion rivals, didn’t help. “The powertrain that people choose in their truck is a big deal,” said Alex Knizek, associate director of test development at Consumer Reports. “To get that capability in an electric vehicle, you have to really stretch the boundaries of what an electric powertrain can do.” Electric pickup"
