The 2021 Kia Niro Electric puts down 201 hp, 239 miles of EPA range and a 62 kWh battery, and a worth-pursuing score, but only after a hard inspection and a fair price.
Score read
A 64/100 makes this a records-first inspection. The useful split is build quality score at 79/100 versus range and efficiency score at 44/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: build quality and software tech. If the seller cannot show recall completion, price that risk or move on.
Price context
Used examples are running around $18,432. Treat that as a budgeting floor, not a final price; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase or Edmunds True Market Value for this exact trim before negotiating.

Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (44/100).
Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 239-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 10-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Dealers make ~$6,663 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 26 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.
NHTSA Recalls (2)
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Niro EV vehicles. The circuit board for the rearview camera may become damaged and cause the rearview camera image not to display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Check VIN status at NHTSA.govKia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2022 Niro and 2018-2022 Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. Fluid may leak into the printed circuit board inside the hydraulic clutch actuator, which can result in an engine compartment fire.

I own a 2021 Kia Niro. The rear backup camera intermittently fails to operate. When shifting into reverse, the display screen will either go completely black or the camera will not activate at all. This issue occurs unpredictably and without warning. As a result, I am unable to see behind the vehicle when reversing, which creates a significant safety concern. The lack of rear visibility increases the risk of a collision, especially in areas with pedestrians, children, or low-visibility obstacles. I am aware that similar rearview camera failures have led to recalls for certain Kia Niro EV models; however, my vehicle is not included in those recalls. Despite this, my vehicle is experiencing the same or a very similar issue. The problem has occurred multiple times from 2023-now and does not appear to be related to specific weather, lighting, or driving conditions. This defect poses a serious safety risk and should be investigated for potential inclusion in a broader recall.

The rear brake rotors on the vehicle are pitted, as confirmed by a local repair shop. The "incident" is ongoing. Kia refuses to repair or replace them under warranty (25,500 miles on the car), claiming they are wear item. However, pitting is not wear, in fact quite the opposite. My analysis (30+ yrs in the auto business): As an EV, regenerative braking means the actual brake systems are rarely used. Noise at low speeds prompted the inspection at a local shop. Braking under high speeds does not result in noise, telling me the system relies too heavily on the front brakes. The result is the rear rotors are too often unused leaving them to rust and then pit. Tesla recognizes that regen braking can actually harm brake rotors, suggesting burnishing the brakes at times using the following procedure: 1) Drive the vehicle at approximately 50 mph - 55 mph (80 km/h - 90 km/h) on a straight road. 2) Apply moderate, consistent pressure to the brake pedal to slowly decelerate the vehicle, releasing at 10 mph (15 km/h). 3) Repeat this procedure 6 times, waiting at least 30 seconds between applications. Since the rear brakes do not appear to engage on the Kia Niro, this method is fruitless. Other Niro drivers report this as seen here: [XXX] I my opinion, the vehicles should at minimum be repaired under warranty or recalled to "rebalance" the brake system. Thank you... I was backing out of a tandem parking spot in a private garage and got too close to a pillar, and tried to pull forward into the spot. It felt like the car got snagged on the pillar, but while pulling forward slowly, the gas pedal snapped off and the car accelerated quickly and uncontrollably. I was able to avoid hitting other cars but drove straight into a concrete wall despite immediately braking. I'm relatively uninjured, but if it had happened in a less controlled environment and/or I hadn't reacted as quickly, there could have been serious injuries to myself or others. There was no indication of an issue prior, and the car is currently in storage with my insurance company and will be appraised next week. I have photos of the broken pedal.

Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. HEV light lit up on dashboard and a warning message was displayed alerting me to immediately pull over and turn off the vehicle. At the same time the vehicle was not responding and acceleration became troubling and with marked hesitation. After waiting several minutes I attemped to turn the vehicle on again but the warning light and alarm went off. Vehicle is currently at the dealership but they have not offer a solution or even a temporary remedy.

This is a hybrid vehicle. It has Dual clutch transmission. Since I have owned it, intermittently the clutch does not disengage completely. This causes the vehicle to try to pull ahead but my foot is on the brake. The vehicle does not stall. Somehow it figures out it can't pull ahead and somehow fully releases. I have brought it to kia at least 3 times. In each case they tell me they cNt get the car to fail and since there are no codes produced they can't fix it. They even held onto the car several days. I asked them to please replace SOMETHING but the say Kia policy will not allow them to do that. So I am stuck with a car that keeps misbehaving. It is embarrassing because problems occur while a passenger is in the car and it seems to them that I am not driving correctly. I don't know what to do.

EV motor and drive train have a clattering noise, much like a playing card attached to a bicycle clattering against the wheel spokes. it speeds up and slows down with the acceleration of the motor.

I received important safety recall letter for NHTSA recall # 23V534. the HCA & or Fuse might need to be replaced. I brought the 2021 Nero to my local Kia dealership, Eagle kia,Riverhead NY on January 18th. The dealership still has the vehicle & claims that a code came up when they did the diagnostics That requires a part that must be secured to complete the fix for the recall. they claim they are awaiting approval from kia corporate & NHTSA to add to the technical bulletin. But their is no timeframe they have or when this additional part will be available. The dealership has the fuses & Harness for the HCA replacement, but needs this additional part. I asked what the # of this part is or name, but all they would tell me TBT.

Problem has not been remedied. What is my recourse? How long do I have to drive around worried about the car going on fire?

I'm a new Niro Ev driver. The VESS noise when reversing the vehicle is very loud. It is too loud, I live in close proximity to neighbors and have to get up early for work and the sound is a major nuisance, I would not want a neighbor that has this car. I understand VESS in place for safety but the reverse backup beeping is just a step down from a garbage truck backing up, especially in the silence of a residential neighborhood in the early AM hours. Furthermore, I and others as seen on web forums will reverse faster than we normally would do to be able to take the car out of reverse as quickly as possible to stop the blaring beeping. This creates its own risk, as if there is less time to react if there is a pedestrian behind the vehicle. The volume of the noise should be greatly reduced. It is also unnecessary noise pollution. Kia, please fix this.

While driving on a major highway, my sunroof suddenly exploded. Luckily the screen was pulled shut otherwise I would have been covered in glass. I was able to drive to the next exit and park the vehicle to then get out and observe the damage. There was a gaping hole in the sunroof. I called a tow who brought me to a Kia dealership. I explained what happened and after inspecting the car the dealership told me it was road debris that caused the issue. I did not see or hear anything hit my car prior to the explosion of the sunroof and I question their findings that it was debris related.

There is a silver strip of "trim" running completely across the dashboard just above the radio controls. It is so reflective that a glare occurs periodically throughout the day when the sun hits it. It's so bad that it blocks the left side mirror with the reflection and can even blind the driver. This needs to be addressed by Kia. Easy solution is to have Kia remove the strips, paint them black, and re-install them.

What Owners Are Saying
"2021 Kia Niro EV Premium -- Owner's review 6 months after This won't be just be a review of the car but inf for electric cars in general because as you'll see, there is more you have to worry about than just the car. One additional piece of information is that I live in Texas. That'll be important later. So. 2021 Kia Niro EV premium. I had a 2018 Mazda 6 signature and got 20k for trade in with 70k miles. The total cost of the Kia was about 46k. TTL and extended warranty brought the financed amount to about 28k. One of the reasons I was looking to give up a perfectly good, reasonably new car is because my commute (about 80-100 miles daily) just wasn't working with my gas consumption which was easily $200-300/month. Almost the monthly cost of a new car. I've had the Niro for about 6 months and have accrued about 8700 miles. I was very excited when I first bought it. It's a bit faster than my mazda was (it was a turbo engine), a bit more space, and more importantly I didn't have to pay for gas anymore. Now, I know what you're thinking: the additional cost of electricity to recharge will offset what I would pay for gas. For those than don't or haven't lived in Texas, let me give you some inside info that I'm positive you won't know. As I'm sure you've heard from the freeze last year, the Texas power grid is weird. I can shop around from different companies to provide me electricity. One of the incentives through the company I have is that they offer free electricity on weekends with a bit higher rate during the week. So I can charge my car on weekends for no cost. This translates to a very minimal uptick on my electricity bill because I still have to recharge during the week. The Wallbox comes with an app that you can track electricity use and map that to a dollar figure so you know what you actually pay towards charing. Which I'll pick up in just a bit. #Pros - No gas - Better infotainment that the mazda. - More space than Mazda 6 - ELECTRIC POWAAAAAH - Adaptive cruise control works better than Mazda. Lane keeping is ok but needs some work. It takes some getting used to to know what conditions the car will disengage lane keep. And it doesn't always keep you center, sometimes it will bias to one side then bumps you back into center. There's also no audible notification that lane keep disengages. It's only a small light that turns from green (engaged) to white (disengaged). If you're not actively paying attention, it WILL disengage and veer you into the next lane or barrier. - Nice ride. Can't complain. - Very few maintenance requirements. #Cons - It makes this really obnoxious reverse sound. This is not an EV feature either. It is also present on their gas models as well (from what I understand). - No power liftback. Very disappointed in this on a top trim. You have to open and close"
"The range shown a while a go was based on my driving style as I did a reset. Thanks for your suggestions, I'll try to reduce the speed to 65mph and see what happens. It doesn't really bother me as long as we charge it at home but helps on a long journey. #10· Oct 19, 2025 I drove an e-Niro for 4 years. Doing 110 km/h (~70 mph) I would have a range of around 360 - 375 km (223 - 233 miles). That is more than enough for long journeys. With the battery at 100% I would do 300 km and that was the max my body and mind would be able to do safely and comfortably. It's a great car for long distance driving. I've taken it on a 6000 km road trip twice and I have made several 2500 km trips with it. Not even once did I feel the car was lacking range. #11· Oct 19, 2025 Do you normally charge the battery to 80% for driving around and 100% for a long journey? Thanks #13· Oct 20, 2025"
"If you wan to improve your range figure just back off to 65mph, doesn't make much difference to journey times but will improves figures. #4· Oct 19, 2025 Sounds about right, we regularly do a 180 mile round motorway trip, and consistently arrive back with 30% left. This is after a 100% charge. This works out as 234 miles theoretical max on this style of journey. #5· Oct 19, 2025 On our eniro4 going 60 (65 on the speedo, it overheads 10%) makes a huge difference vs 70. #6· Oct 19, 2025\\ \\ \\ (Edited) I've noticed that the (brick-shaped) Kia Soul chews through the battery when you hit 70mph. Keeping it chugging along at 60-65mph on ACC is much more efficient, much like the LEAF used to be. The main difference between LEAF and Soul is that I don't really bother to check battery % often."
"Pulled into the garage and my car presented me with a screen to start my first OTA update when I shut the car off. It said about 15 minutes to complete. "Mine shows EA stations, but as I stated in another thread, EVGO chargers at the same location are listed individually in the list. So a 6 charger location shows up 6 time #4· Nov 8, 2025 I don't have "the story" but I agree. My nav, updated October 2025 nav software now shows Tesla SC stations almost exclusively even though for my car ( 2022 EV6) I only get 97 kwh speeds at a Tesla SC. This is when I KNOW there are EA, EVgo and other CCS stations that could give me full 230+ kwh speeds along the route. So I'm back to finding a charger on PlugShare or ABRP, then using the Kia nav system to type in the specific charger I want so I can get advantage of preconditioning. Ugh... #5· Nov 8, 2025 #6· Nov 11, 2025"
"I must add that all the suspension has been checked by me (former mechanic) ,my local garage and three different Kia branches. Therefore I'm content it's not a ball joint, wishbone, strut, lose wheel, insecure Bonnet etc. #108· Jan 28, 2025 My 2022 Nero is in for a complete rebuild of the front suspension. This seems to be a common problem and you should not be fobbed off. Had a Mazda before the Niro and build quality so much better on Mazda. Kia are no help they don't care about the customer. #5· Dec 22, 2023 Just another update for mine. That's the car been left with the dealer for a week. Apparently they can hear the noise but can't find the faulty item. All steering, suspension and motor parts in order and not failing. Been told to take it away for another month or so and see if it gets worse. Ultimately I will be going back to the dealer in January for another attempt at identifying the problem"
"Well, looks like KIA dropped the update today at least here in Canada. I am in the process of downloading the file right now but will wait for a few days as I want to test the OTA updates. Somehow I believe that is actually not working in my car. 😠 I guess I'll find out soon. looks like a similar problem as with my first EV6 where they had to replace the head unit in order to properly work again. I'll see over the next few days as I wait and see if the update is downloaded OTA. #7· Nov 12, 2025 Yes, the OTA to my car (in US) dropped yesterday. As far as I can tell, it doesn't seem to track DC charger station status any better. Haven't had a chance to look at other features. We'll see. Would like to know if other people got the OTA and what they found. #8· Nov 12, 2025 I guess mine is updating. Got this circle thing in the corner. Strange since I haven't had the Ultimate Package in over a year."
"#4· Nov 23, 2023 Hi everyone. I have a sept 2022 niro ev3 which I am the only owner. It's had covered 10'000 miles mainly on the motorway / a roads. I developed an intermittent front suspension knock 8 months ago which I hear going over speed bumps or uneven ground, but as I say intermittently. It appears to happen shortly after turning a corner and then going straight again or going up/down hill, then as you proceed straight it won't happen again. Anyway the car has been into Kia 3 times for a single day each time and they have not been able to find or cure the knock. First time I was fobbed off as it was a lose trim underneath, second time a lose door panel and 3rd time they couldn't hear it. On the last occasion I refused to take the car back, describing the fault to the service manager who kept the car a few hours longer and heard the noise. The service manager things that it's something lose but doesn't know what and will require it for a week to investigate. Its booked in for 10th December so I will let everyone know after that."
