The contact owned a 2026 Rivian R1S. The contact stated that while at a red light and idled, the vehicle accelerated violently, and the vehicle was uncontrollable. The contact depressed the brake pedal; however, the vehicle failed to stop as intended. The contact's vehicle crashed into another vehicle and damaged the rear corner bumper of the other vehicle. The vehicle then crashed into a median strip where there was a 5-foot boulder. The contact stated that the vehicle crashed into a five-foot boulder, and the vehicle was damaged. In addition, the contact stated that the failure occurred when the accelerator pedal was depressed while leaving from a red light stop sign. The vehicle was towed to a local tow yard. The contact sustained bumps and bruises. In addition, the contact received whiplash to the right side of her neck and scratches from the air bag deploying. The contact's six-year-old granddaughter, who was seated in the rear seat, received no injuries. A Police report was filed. The contact stated that the failure was very scary, and the only thing that worked in the vehicle was the steering wheel. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. These two issues have left me and my family stranded three different times in remote locations in spite of our best efforts to keep the vehicle well charged and cross referencing navigation with other apps. This left me stranded in Lone Pine, California where I had to abandon the vehicle and have it towed back to the Burbank service center and again near Mt. Shasta, California. Both were in December 2025, in sub-freezing conditions at night after repeated charging attempts. This created additional issues where the 12V battery charge ran down, the vehicle couldn’t get into Neutral to be towed and in all cases, Rivian roadside assistance was not able help beyond scheduling a service appointment.

I would like to file a safety concern regarding the vehicles rear doors. The manual latch is covered by a strong piece of plastic that cannot be opened in a quick emergency. I am very worried as I drive with family and I don’t want them to potentially be stuck. The front doors have an easy manual latch right next to the electric door open button, and I would like to report this concern as the back doors should also have a manual latch just like the front. The current latches genuinely are difficult to open.

"Review: From Tesla to Rivian R1S as a family vehicle Last week, we took delivery of an R1S (perf dual motor, max pack, 21’’ wheel, ocean coast/dark ash + LA silver), and immediately took it from the Bay Area to Tahoe. Here’s our 1 week review. **Tl;dr: R1S is a great family vehicle, even if you don't consider yourself "adventurous". Maybe the best out there!** ​ A little bit more about our background: We use the vehicle primarily as a family vehicle for hauling 2 toddlers and often 4 adults (so we need 6 seats). We don’t consider ourselves very adventurous (never go camping or mountain biking; skiing is the closest we come to “adventures”), so we are NOT the target audience of Rivian marketing. We have been Tesla drivers for 6 years. Before the R1S, we have a 2023 Model X and a 2022 Model Y. We have also recently drove (rentals/test drives) Subaru Outback, Audi A6, Lincoln Navigator, Chevy Suburban, BMW 3, Kia EV9 and Mercedes EQS. ​ **What We Love About the R1S:** * **Design**: Obviously this is a very subjective one, but the vehicle's aesthetics are stunning. It strikes a perfect balance between masculine and feminine elements, with paint that seems to have more depth compared to Tesla's. Wife approved! * **Quality**: The car is well made (both software and hardware). Given this is Rivian’s 2nd car and the 2nd year of mass manufacturing, I’m pleasantly surprised. Rivian is making \~50k cars this year, which is equivalent to Tesla’s volume in 2015. The R1S definitely felt more mature than the Tesla’s from back then (or even later years). * Both our latest X and Y had minor things to fix within a few days of delivery (falcon wing door leak, wiper issues), and we haven’t yet found any issues with the R1S that we need to return to service. * The build quality feels better than current Tesla, and it feels more “luxurious” than the Model X. But to be fair, neither Tesla nor Rivian feel super luxurious, if that's what you are after. * **Space**: So much storage space compared with the Model X. * The trunk is much larger given the more box shape of the R1S. The frunk is also substantially larger. The lower center console is also great. We were able to pack much more stuff to Tahoe compared with the Model X. * Adults can actually sit in the 3rd row comfortably. * **Range**: With max pack, we could make it to Tahoe without charging stop. * **Drive**: * It's quite fun to drive. I didn’t feel I was driving a bigger car compared with the Model X. "Delivered: R1S Gen 2 Tri Max Ascend, Ocean Coast + Driftwood This past weekend, I took delivery of a new 2025 Rivian R1S Gen 2 Tri Max with Ascend interior in Ocean Coast + Driftwood. I hadn't seen any real world photos/videos of the new Driftwood color option, so I wanted to share a few shots and some initial impressions after 48 hours of ownership. Pics below, plus full video walkthrough including up-close shots of Ascend interior and Dynamic Glass Roof. **Ascend interior** * The upgrades to the materials and colors are really classy. I love how much plastic they've ditched in favor of nicer materials. * There's vegan leather covering all the door panels, the hinged pockets on each door, along the bottom of the center console area near the footwells, and on the steering wheel cover where the horn is. * Instead of plastic seatback shells on the driver and passenger seat, they're now wrapped in a flecked heather gray fabric. In my opinion, this is one of the biggest upgrades to the interior with the Ascend package, because those seatbacks are such a large, visually-prominent surface for all your passengers and now they look far more premium. * Driftwood pairs beautifully with the Ocean Coast vegan leather. It has a grayish-blue wood grain pattern running through it which looks quite elegant. * All 3 rows have plaid stitching patterns on the seat backs and cushions, and there are plaid-colored accents on all floor mats, the sides of every headrest, on the back of the upper grab handles, and on the straps of the seatback pockets. * There are bronze metallic accents (instead of silver) along the dash, center console, door cards, speaker grilles, and seat controls. * The headliner is a nice suede-like material. * My Tri Max configuration still has 3rd-row side compartments / cubbies. (VIN series 57XXX, manufactured Sep 2024) **Premium Audio** * Everyone else is right: music sounds muffled. I'm coming from a Tesla Model Y which had a noticeably wider soundstage. * Vocals and mid/high frequency sounds get muddied together and lose their sense of separation. * It feels like it just makes the cut for an acceptable sound system at this price range. It makes me wonder what the baseline, non-premium audio sounds like. * In the EQ settings, I increased the sliders towards the right (1k, 2k, 4k, 8k) which helped bring back some clarity to the highs. **Dynamic Glass Roof** * When enabled, the glass turns opaque after a second or two while still letting a pleasing amount of light into the cabin. I could still clearly see raindrops sitting on the top of the glass, but otherwise, everything turns a bright, milky color and distant objects (buildings, trees) are no longer visible. * When disabled, the glass is still fully transparent but just a smidge fainter or cloudier-looking than standard glass, though not distractingly so. **Ride quality, noise, vibrations, harshness** * Coming from a Tesla Model Y with"

"In terms of 'cons' our biggest issue by far has been reliability. We were stranded 1.5 hours from civilization on a long winding potholed dirt road near Mt. St. Helens when the Rivian went into a 'driving disabled' mode due to a 'Park brake failure' issue. We had to be rescued by a caravan of 1940's era Jeep aficionados on day long tour. It took Rivian three visits to the service center after the dreaded light came on again in the middle of one of our mountain trips two more times, and a total of three months to track down the issue to a crimped wiring harness above the rear drivers side wheel. Unclear what caused it to be crimped - the hard offroad usage, running a log into our passenger side half-axle, pulling trees, or a manufacturing flaw. It's been almost two months since the final diagnosis and remediation and no recurrence. Replacing the harness also fixed a 'vehicle over current' error we were consistently getting while charging, which Rivian was unable to debug and kept attributing to our home charger. (This is another pet peeve - our Rivian SC has flaky high speed chargers that constantly error out, making it impossible to debug our intermittent charging error). Oh, and our suspension also sprung a leak and ingested dirt so the compressor and all lines and dampers had to be replaced (under warranty)."

"The one thing I would say in addition to greater reliability in general; is that I wish Rivian had a higher bar for 'failure' modes. Rendering a vehicle 'undrivable' should only be done in cases where it is clearly safer to prevent the vehicle from moving, than risk stranding the driver (and family hours away from civilization). In the places we take this vehicle - almost nothing meets that bar. The parking brake system definitely does not meet that bar for me. It let us drive for 30 plus minutes with an error that said something like 'Service Parking Brake System Soon' before we parked it and went for our hike. Preventing us from shifting to drive after the hike, stranding your family hours away from help, with no cell signal, and then forcing your entire family to hitch hike with a bunch of jeepers, and tow the vehicle out of the depths of Gifford Pinchot National Forest is definitely not the safest outcome or lowest cost for Rivian. I've heard anecdotally that the Subara does an amazing job of functioning - even when electrical lines have been severed and electronic shifting and other features you would think would be critical are knocked out."
