I parked my car in my single car garage, opened the driver's door and left the vehicle. Car is supposed to go into "park" automatically. Went around the car, opened the trunk and the right rear door to get something large out of the trunk. As I was standing behind the car, the car suddenly starting moving toward me. This software update has a bug and nkw this feature turns off even though you have it set, so you think you’re parking and you press the brake and lift your foot which should put it into park and the car keeps moving and you hit other cars or people or anything. The driver was turning the steering wheel gently when, without warning, the vehicle suddenly accelerated rapidly. The unexpected surge in speed left the driver unable to react in time to stop the vehicle. As a result, the BMW iX rammed into the side of a parked Ford truck. The impact was strong enough to push the Ford truck forward, causing it to collide with another nearby vehicle. No injuries were immediately visible, but the BMW and both other vehicles sustained noticeable damage. The manufacturer has inspected the car but still have not heard back. The incident occurred in a residential area with no hazardous driving conditions. The sudden, uncontrolled acceleration was highly unusual and led directly to the multi-vehicle collision.

The brake pedal in the iX is a dangerous, flawed design. The arm of the brake pedal is at a 45 degree angle, and crosses the path of the accelerator. The result is that my foot clips behind the brake arm. Then my foot is stuck while depressing the accelerator!! It's the exact same result that caused the 2009 Toyota carpet mat recall. I have attached a photo showing the concept, but I am happy to provide further evidence or answer questions. In one photo, you can see that it is possible to entirely wedge a foot behind the brake arm while completely depressing the accelerator. It is compounded and worse with the BMW all-weather mats like you can see in the picture. They have a polygon design, but it is done with huge grooves that catch your heel sometimes and kind of hold your foot in a position. In addition, the Cruise Control button is located immediately where your hand can accidentally press it (I've done it many times). If you accidentally do, it immediately attempts to uncontrolled accelerate to highway speed. There is already a recall on this, and all BMW did was disable the cruise at very low speeds. The problem still exists in traffic! There should not be a nondiscript button that is easy to accidentally press but causes uncontrolled acceleration in a car that can reach 60mph in 4 seconds.

My 2024 BMW iX xDrive50 intermittently fails to deploy the rearview windows upon startup. Restarting does not help; they open only after driving above ~25 mph. This typically occurred once or twice a month based on my recollection. I purchased the vehicle in late May 2024, so I had it for only five months before the accident. More concerningly, the vehicle sometimes shifts from Drive (D) to Brake (B) mode without input. I noticed this behavior several times before a crash on 10/27/24, and again after the crash. On 10/27/24, while in B mode, I slowed at an intersection with ~30 feet of space ahead. I was practically at a stop and began to inch forward when the car suddenly accelerated and I lost control, rear-ending the car in front. No automatic braking or warning systems activated. BMW North America inspected the vehicle on 12/20/24 and later concluded that no defect was present after a 6-mile test drive. After their review, my dealership also conducted its own inspection but was unable to replicate the issues I reported. However, neither review addressed—or could replicate—the intermittent switching between D and B modes, which remains unresolved and unpredictable. BMW also could not explain or resolve the issue of the rearview windows failing to deploy. I am concerned that both issues may reflect a broader software or user interface flaw. I am also concerned that BMW’s investigation focused primarily on establishing that I pressed the accelerator pedal before the crash, as a way to default blame for the accident to me, rather than investigating whether a fault in the vehicle’s electronic input or feedback systems could have contributed to the incident. Given the safety implications and the limited scope of BMW's investigation, I request a deeper independent review.

More concerningly, the vehicle sometimes shifts from Drive (D) to Brake (B) mode without input. I noticed this behavior several times before a crash on 10/27/24, and again after the crash. On 10/27/24, while in B mode, I slowed at an intersection with ~30 feet of space ahead. I was practically at a stop and began to inch forward when the car suddenly accelerated and I lost control, rear-ending the car in front. No automatic braking or warning systems activated. BMW North America inspected the vehicle on 12/20/24 and later concluded that no defect was present after a 6-mile test drive. After their review, my dealership also conducted its own inspection but was unable to replicate the issues I reported. However, neither review addressed—or could replicate—the intermittent switching between D and B modes, which remains unresolved and unpredictable. BMW also could not explain or resolve the issue of the rearview windows failing to deploy. I am concerned that both issues may reflect a broader software or user interface flaw. They informed me that the car had caught fire and that it was put out by a good Samaritan using an extinguisher. The car was not drivable and there was visible fire damage

Summary of Incident – March 28, 2025 On March 28, 2025, at approximately 8:17a.m., I left my residence and proceeded to my vehicle, which was parked inside my garage. I opened the tailgate of the vehicle, placed my laptop in the trunk compartment, and securely closed the tailgate. Upon entering the vehicle, I observed that the dashboard screen displayed no safety warnings or indications that the tailgate was open or ajar. My key fob remained in my possession, located in my pants' pocket, throughout this time. I then drove approximately one mile from my residence. While executing a right turn at a traffic light, the dashboard screen suddenly displayed a message indicating that the tailgate was open. Looking through my left side mirror, I observed that my carry-on sized luggage had fallen out of the vehicle and onto the road. I promptly and safely pulled over, exited the vehicle, and inspected the trunk, where I found the tailgate halfway open without any apparent cause, I pressed the button on the tailgate to close it. I retrieved my luggage from the roadway, noting that it had sustained significant damage as a result of being ejected from the vehicle and impacting the road surface. Fortunately, there were no other vehicles in the vicinity at the time of the incident, and no injuries occurred. Subsequently, I reviewed footage from my garage security camera, which clearly showed that the tailgate was fully closed prior to my departure from the residence. I put the auto reverse on and the car ran into a wall. I tried to discuss with bmw and they stated the car performed appropriately and they are stating I had to take over when it ran into the wall. I couldn’t react fast enough as the car ran into the wall quickly. They have since said they will not take responsibility for the accident.

"I'm not planning on 10 years, but at least five to six. I have scheduled maintenance and extended warranty paid for the first five and six years of ownership respectively on a 2025 iX xDrive 50. I'm just outside Toronto, and right now it's -10C and we're getting wind chill of -25C every night (I suppose that's like summer to you). Summer range is 425km at 80% charge. 500km at 100%. Winter range with the above overnight lows is 300km at 80%. I have no concerns at all about battery life. ABC, always be charging, charge as slow as you can (I charge at 24 amps overnight, even with this cold I still have a full "tank" every morning) and you shouldn't have any problems. You can precondition the interior and the battery if you have a regular commuting departure time. This might be the best car I've ever owned. It's our 4th BMW. I took delivery last summer, CPO with 15,000km on it and currently have just under 29,000km now. We had a Tesla Model S and were able to renew its extended warranty twice. Repairs on these beasts are not for the faint of heart, and really, going beyond the extended warranty period I think just isn't worth it. We had almost $5K in repairs on the Model S over two years after the warranty expired. I'd rather just get a new vehicle at that point. BMW might be different (I spent comparatively little on my 2004 330ci but then, that's an entirely different kettle 'o BMW fish) but I'm thinking the path forward is to move to another BMW EV sometime in year six of ownership. This car exceeds my expectations daily. So, not yet a long term owner, but my expectation is that I will be one FWIW."

One trip during the warm months gave me an estimated range of 461 miles at the start, and I charged after driving 429 miles and showing 10% left. I average 3.2-3.6 miles per kw hour, slightly less in the winter, where my lowest range was 320 miles on a near zero F day. FWIW, I only charge 2-3 times per week, but always to 100% and drive it early in the day after the charge. My BMW tech says this is fine as long as you don't leave it fully charged for a long time. (I did this with my previous vehicle, 2019 Audi etron and after 3 years battery degradation was only 2-3% in a test). I only charge when it goes below 35-40% and I avoid using DC chargers unless absolutely necessary (road trip). As a data point, I have the 21 inch wheels and EPA on my car is 305."

"The issue with BMW updates for their operating systems is that they hit a variety of system versions and model years. Although they are advertised as - somewhat - VIN-specific, that really ends up not being the case. So a MY26 i4 with iD8.5 gets the same update as your MY22 iX with iD 8.0, sometimes seemingly willy-nilly. It may do nothing for your car, it may provide some benefit, or it may brick it, seemingly randomly. BMW tries, I am convinced, to minimize conflicts between operating systems, but their expertise as proven many times is not software. For reference, I apply updates as they come out, but they are seldom flawless, sometimes ineffective, and not totally predictable, and I've had a lot of practice. And unfortunately there is no roll-back to any previous version if the current one fails. So it's not unwise to be prudently cautious at being the first in line to apply any update, until it gets washed In the field by multiple first users, because there will almost certainly be a v1a, or 2 or 3b coming out on the heels of whatever was released, and BMW is notorious for beta testing in the field. If your car is having an identified issue and a patch rolls out, tally-ho! If it drives fine and you've had no issues, pausing a bit is certainly rational.... The same thing applies, BTW, with any software or any other car manufacturer."
