Buyer brief · 237 words

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV has 450 miles of EPA range, 350 kW fast charging and a 190 kWh battery, and park-outside or do-not-drive risk hangs over the trim — verify the VIN before you negotiate.

Score read

A 55/100 makes this not a casual purchase. Software and driver-assist score is the cleaner read at 81/100; build quality score needs more diligence at 23/100. Owners on Reddit repeatedly cite range and owner satisfaction as recurring problems. A clean VIN lookup matters more than the headline count.

Used examples are running around $60,581. Treat that as a budgeting floor, not a final price; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase or Edmunds True Market Value for this exact trim before negotiating.

Who this is for

✓ Good for

  • Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging

✗ Avoid if you are a

  • Road tripper Long trips, needs DC fast network
  • $
Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Verify Build quality is where the inspection earns its keep (23/100).

Mitigation Inspect alignment, cabin noise, suspension feel, tires, and trim wear more carefully than usual.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 450-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Drive rough pavement, check door and hatch alignment, and listen for trim noise before you negotiate.

While exiting a highway via an off-ramp, the vehicle experienced a sudden mechanical failure consistent with internal engine/bearing failure. During deceleration on the off-ramp, the engine began to shudder violently and immediately lost power. The vehicle was unable to maintain normal operation and became unsafe in an active traffic environment. After coming to a stop, the engine would not restart and the vehicle was completely inoperable. There were no prior warning signs or alerts before the failure occurred. The issue developed abruptly while the vehicle was in motion. The vehicle required towing and dealer inspection. Diagnosis confirmed internal engine damage / bearing failure / engine seizure. The repair required engine replacement This failure is consistent with widely reported issues involving GM 6.2L V8 engines (model years 2019–2024) experiencing bearing failure and catastrophic engine damage. The same failure characteristics appear to be present in this vehicle. This represents a serious safety concern due to the sudden and complete loss of engine power and inability to restart the vehicle while in a traffic environment, creating risk of collision or roadway obstruction. The vehicle had approximately 65,000 miles at the time of failure.

Was driving the truck on the highway at 75mph when suddenly the motor revved up in rpm’s and vehicle lost all power. There was no warning lights or any limp mode or anything as such as far as warning. The truck lost all power and could hear metal to metal sounds and turned off the motor. I was able to coast the truck to an off ramp in 70mph traffic. The truck would not turn back on and vehicle was immobile, had to have the vehicle towed by a flatbed to a gm dealer near by. The dealer gave me a loaner pickup and hasn’t looked at my vehicle yet. I bought this pickup less then 3 weeks ago and the L87 recall and oil change had been done prior to me buying it. I was just happy that the truck didnt full shut down at that speed and cause a crash etc. Dealer said motor failure to me and couldn’t confirm a turn around time frame for my truck to get back to me.

Summary of Incident: On March 28, 2026, while traveling at 70 MPH on the Florida Turnpike, the vehicle suffered an instantaneous loss of motive power. The engine died abruptly with no warning. Upon reaching the shoulder, the electronic transmission locked, refusing to shift into Neutral or Park. The engine cranks but will not start. 1. Component Failure & Availability: The exact component is currently unknown, but the failure involves the Powertrain, Fuel System, and Electronic Transmission Control. The vehicle is currently at an authorized dealership and is available for inspection by the manufacturer or NHTSA upon request. 2. Safety Risk: The sudden loss of power at highway speeds created an immediate risk of a rear-end collision. Because the electronic transmission locked and would not allow the vehicle to be shifted into Neutral, it became a fixed object on a high-speed shoulder. It could not be pushed to a safer location, increasing the risk of a secondary accident. 3. Problem Reproduction: The vehicle was towed directly to an authorized Chevrolet dealership. As of this filing, the dealership is in possession of the vehicle, but the failure has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a technician as they are awaiting formal diagnostic commencement. 4. Inspections: The vehicle was inspected by a roadside towing professional for transport. It is currently at the manufacturer’s authorized service center awaiting a formal diagnostic inspection. No police or insurance inspections have occurred. 5. Warning Symptoms: There were no warning lamps, "Check Engine" lights, or messages prior to the failure. No symptoms like rough idling or unusual noises occurred. The vehicle performed normally until the moment of total power loss.

My husband and I were driving his Chevy Silverado with our two dogs in the back. Without any warning or any alert, our vehicle came to a complete stop in the middle lane on a three lane highway. Not a slow stop where there was any time. I’m confirming immediate. At that time, the vehicle would not move at all for almost 5 minutes. As we sat there praying to God that we wouldn’t die as tractor trailers and other vehicles came flying past missing us by inches. It’s truly a miracle that no one was killed. He put truck in neutral and pressed start button and was not able to go any faster then 5 mph and once again a miracle we were able to make it to shoulder of highway without being hit. The vehicle was shaking excessively and flashing things like emissions, traction, as our videos and pictures will show when we made it to side of highway. This is a disgrace that any vehicle would ever be manufactured with this outcome. I am deeply grateful that my husband and I and our two dogs are alive and not injured but this should NEVER happen again.

On 1/20/26, we purchased a ‘24 Chevy Silverado EV from a Chevrolet dealership. 2 days later, on 1/22/26, while my husband was driving on the interstate, the tonneau cover partially detached and flew backwards lifting upwards and flapping violently. One of the metal crossbars detached completely from the tonneau cover and flew off the truck, and a second crossbar began to tear away. The cover was flapping forcefully which created a highly unstable and dangerous condition. My husband pulled over on the side of the interstate to remove the tonneau cover to prevent it from fully detaching. He placed the cover into the truck bed. This incident occurred suddenly, with no warning. This was a near-miss incident with potentially catastrophic consequences. If the tonneau cover had fully detached, it could have become airborne and struck another vehicle. The crossbar that flew off, could have struck another vehicle, easily penetrating a windshield, causing another driver to lose control, or result in a multi-vehicle collision. The risk of serious injury or fatality was significant. The next day, on 1/23/26, we took the truck and damaged tonneau cover to our local Chevrolet dealership for inspection. The service manager visually inspected the cover and documented the failure. We scheduled an appointment for repair at their soonest availability, 2/4/26. We will not feel comfortable using a new cover unless a modification is made to adequately secure the cover to prevent this from occurring again. We also called the Chevrolet dealership where we purchased the vehicle from and spoke with the general manager to let them know what happened, as they have sold close to 100 of these Chevy Silverado EV’s. They said this has happened to others and they speculate that GM is already aware of this concern. We urge the NHTSA and GM to take immediate action. Please open an investigation and issue a recall before someone is seriously injured or killed. Thank you NHTSA!

Email Subject I am reporting a serious safety-related defect involving sudden and complete vehicle shutdown while driving in a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST. Component/System Involved: The failure appears related to the 12-volt electrical system and associated vehicle control electronics. When the vehicle detects the 12V battery as dead or critically low, it immediately disables propulsion and control systems. The exact failed component is UNKNOWN. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Incident Description: This failure has occurred twice under similar conditions (ambient temperature approximately 25°F). On November 28, 2024 and again on January 2, 2026, after driving approximately two blocks at low residential speeds, the vehicle abruptly and completely shut down while in motion. In both incidents, the shutdown was immediate, without warning, and accompanied by a loud thud and an extremely abrupt stop. Safety Risk: In both incidents, the vehicle became completely immobilized in the roadway. I was unable to steer to the side of the road, restart the vehicle, or shift it into gear to move it out of traffic. This created a significant risk of collision. A similar failure at highway speeds could result in a severe or fatal crash. Warnings or Prior Symptoms: No warning lamps, messages, alerts, or other symptoms appeared prior to either shutdown. Problem Confirmation or Reproduction: The issue has occurred twice under cold-weather conditions. Inspections: After the first incident, the 12V battery was inspected and no issues were found. Following the second incident, the vehicle is currently being inspected at a Chevrolet dealership. No police or insurance inspections were performed. This behavior suggests the vehicle lacks a fail-safe or degraded-operation mode for 12V system failure and instead performs an immediate shutdown while in motion, which may represent a serious safety defect warranting investigation.

Vehicle: 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country Engine: 6.2L L87 V8 Recall: N252494001 – L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion I am submitting this complaint to report a serious safety defect involving my 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country related to NHTSA Safety Recall N252494001 (L87 Engine – Loss of Propulsion). My vehicle experienced a sudden engine failure consistent with the conditions described in the recall, resulting in loss of propulsion. Due to this failure, General Motors authorized a full engine replacement at an authorized GMC dealership. After the engine replacement was completed, the replacement engine also failed in the same manner as the original engine, again resulting in loss of propulsion. This second failure occurred despite the vehicle being repaired according to General Motors’ recall procedures and specifications. Loss of propulsion creates a significant safety risk, especially while driving at highway speeds or in traffic, as it can lead to sudden power loss without warning and increases the risk of a crash. Despite the replacement engine failing in the same way as the original recalled engine, General Motors is now refusing to replace the second failed engine or provide a permanent remedy. As a result, my vehicle remains unsafe to operate and unresolved under the existing safety recall. I am concerned that the recall remedy is inadequate and that replacement engines may also contain the same defect, creating an ongoing safety hazard. I am requesting that NHTSA review this matter to determine whether the recall repair is effective and whether additional corrective action is necessary to protect vehicle owners.

My dealer would do the inspection but to do the inspection but they said they are not allowed until I have gotten "permission" from GM. My truck had approximately 55,000 miles on it when the incident happened. I pulled out of a store and began going down the road and the rear wheels locked up slamming everything forward and the truck and leaving us almost rear ended. The truck was stuck in one gear after breaking the tires free with check engine lights flashing and the dash saying reduced power. It has since been at the dealership for 3 months waiting on a valve body with no end in sight. There is apparently a national back order on these faulty parts because of how common this high speed rear wheel lockup is so I am left without a vehicle or an end in sight.

While in traffic over 45 miles per hour, the vehicle placed itself into a hazard mode due to the electric vehicle propulsion system. This happened so fast and the deceleration rate was so quick that it risked a rear end collision. This is the second time this has happened and both were following a heavy rain storm. I drove through a modest puddle that did not even submerge half of the tire wall making contact with the road and did so slowly. Less than five miles later, the vehicle goes into what my service advisor calls "limp mode." I have asked General Motors to give me an even exchange or, in lieu of the fear this vehicle gave me, an upgrade to a Cadillac Escalade IQ.

On 7 or 8 occasions while navigating parking lots/driveway turnaround, i bumped the resume switch on the steering wheel and the truck took off accelerating rapidly from 2-4 mph speed until I disengaged with the brake. Someone with slower reactions or unaware of what is going on is going to get hurt by this. I believe it's tied to collision avoidance system and the adaptive cruise control mode. This system will allow cruise to stay engaged even as it slows you to a halt in, e.g. a rush hour slowdown, but if it slows you to some speed just greater than zero, and the traffic ahead speeds up, it will speed back up to the cruise setting. Similarly, when cruise is disengaged by brake action, but there is still a stored value in cruise control, if you accidentally hit resume at slow speeds the logic is treating it like a traffic situation. So the old 20 or 25mph minimum engagement speed no longer applies. As for why I inadvertently hit resume, it has to do with the raised momentary rocker switch at the 9 oclock position on the steering wheel. If you make a turn with your palm against steering wheel. For example, on a left turn, if the wheel is turning counterclockwise and your left palm is in the 9 o'clock position, it can rub against the raised cruise control rocker triggering the resume function, and off she will go! A flush or recessed button/switch would have been a better choice here. At this point, a software change would be the best solution to ignore the resume function below a certain speed.

I was making a right turn and my signal started flashing faster than normal and stated service passenger front turn lamp. There is no way of service without replacing the entire headlight which is $2000.00 for one side. Took to gm dealer about a month ago to diagnose the opposite side and they stated warranty will not cover it. The truck had approximately 76k miles on it when the driver side was looked at and the passenger side was with 78k miles. I have contacted gm warranty claims department twice now to put it all on record. It’s a major safety concern when I have no turn signals on the front which could easily cause a crash. It also is a concern of being pulled over by any law official for something that I can not control and it’s not like I can just go to a local parts store to get a bulb on a weekend due to a poor design by General Motors. Other trucks of the same year with the same headlights that I have are being recalled due to the same issues but since my build date doesn’t fall into that category they do not want to take the responsibility of making things right or help prevent safety incidents from happening that could cause harm their customers and innocent bystanders

I am 6'2" tall. The shoulder straps on both the drivers and passenger side do not adjust up far enough to protect me in the event of a crash. The straps slip down below my shoulder. This is due to the fact that the WT model does not have power seats, so I am unable to lower my seating position to a safe level. If the seat could be lowered, the shoulder straps would sit properly above my shoulder. In the event of a crash the shoulder strap will be totally useless.

While pulling my Vilano fifth wheel trailer to Alabama from my home state of Texas the driver information center alerted me that the trailer brakes were disconnected. Then a short while later it alerted that trailer brakes were connected. This situation continued for the entire trip to Alabama. When the info center indicated trailer brakes were disconnected, they were indeed not working. Several times I almost rear ended cars stopping in front of me. (The vehicle had a recall notice urging to take it in and replace the brake module shortly after purchasing it. I did this.) Once I arrived in Alabama I took the vehicle to the Chevrolet dealership in Foley, Alabama to check the braking system. They told me there was no problem with the braking system. I retrurned to my home in Little Elm, Texas with the problem occurring the entire trip. I finally made it home and today took the vehicle to James Wood Chevrolet in Denton, Texas to have the braking systme checked again. They told me there was nothing wrong with the braking system. The service writer did say that because the trailer has LED lights the braking system does not recognize the voltage from the trailer and that is why the brakes are disconnecting. Please help me find out how to correct this extremely dangerous condition while I am towing my 16,000 pound fifth wheel trailer.

Since purchasing this truck 06/30/2024; during the 9100 miles driven, electrical issues such as check engine, EWS needs to be serviced, Forward Collision Service, Stereo screen freezing up, Tire Pressure stating air is needed but checked air pressure, it is where it should be, Right Signal Trailer service needed but not pulling a trailer. Three times after starting the truck it failed to go into reverse, stuck in neutral. Two of the three times it was able to reset after 10 minutes of shutting down the truck and restarting. Third time had to get the truck towed due to unable to reverse out of parking spot. When driving it seems as if the truck is stuck in 2nd gear while trying to accelerate, rough driving at times. When car turns off it makes knocking noise and sounds like it is trying to turn off electrically. Tailgate would open while driving even though shut and checked. Driver seat motor failing while trying to move the seat. Middle seat stays in upright locked position for days before it will release. Dealership is stating that valve body needs to be changed but will take up to 6-8 months due to backordered part, but no loaner car is available. Will have to be without a vehicle for the entire time. All is covered under warranty.

It scared the crap out of me as there was nothing in front of me - if I hadn’t known the truck had automatic collision software - I’d have driven to the Chevy Dealership right then. The issue involved multiple systems, including the ABS system, brake system, and electronic stability system (ESG), along with a significant loss of braking power. These components may still be available for inspection. My safety and that of others were seriously at risk during my morning commute in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The truck lost braking capability, nearly causing a collision with the vehicle in front of me. Later, as I attempted to park, it again lost braking force, and I narrowly avoided crashing into bushes. The collision prevention system also failed to activate during these incidents. The problem was inspected and diagnosed by the dealership after being towed via roadside assistance. They confirmed that the battery caused the failures across multiple systems. This was not the first issue with the battery. About a month ago, the battery suddenly died, preventing the truck from starting. At that time, Chevrolet sent me a message stating that the battery status was critical. After recharging it, the vehicle functioned normally until this recent incident. The first symptoms of the latest issue appeared while I was stopped at a red light. The truck suddenly shut off and restarted on its own. Warning lights for the ABS system and brake system appeared on the dashboard. Once the light turned green and I started to accelerate, an ESG message appeared, followed by another message limiting the maximum speed to 43 mph. When I tried to brake to park the truck, the brakes were slow to respond, making it feel like the truck had completely lost braking power. The collision prevention system failed to activate, increasing the danger. Fortunately, my two babies were not in the truck at the time of the incident. This was an extremely frightening situation for me as a driver. The truck is only six months old, has 37,000 miles, and was purchased new. I believe many of these failures could have been prevented with proper safeguards. While I was lucky to avoid an

However, during these events, there were no cars ahead of the vehicle. There was no obstruction of sensors or cameras, and the incidents occurred in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and clear days, both during the day and night. In August of 2025 I purchased a Chevy MD 5500 from Paul Masse, Inc., in RI. From the time of delivery the truck had a serious shake while operating. Paul Masse, Inc., told me that the tires had flat spots from sitting on the lot prior to purchase. As time went on the dealership placed two new sets of tires on the truck. Neither set fixed the shaking. Paul Masse, Inc., told me that this was how the truck operates and that there was nothing that they could do about it. I continued to contact the dealership for further examination of the vehicle for months with no response. I eventually sent a claim into the RI Dealer Commissioners' office. The commission acknowledged my claim and reached out to Paul Masse, Inc. Paul Masse, Inc., agreed to have their Executive VP, Bob Masse take the vehicle for a ride with me to see what was going on. After driving the truck with Bob Masse, he agreed to bring the truck in for further review. I dropped the truck off a day later, Bob Masse called me after his mechanics looked the vehicle over and told me that they would not be able to fix the truck, but they would offer a buyback if I agreed to take a new truck. I agreed to take the new truck. I had to finance a whole new truck, paying for more insurance, sales and registration taxes. The day I took delivery of the new truck it drove exactly as the old truck drove. In addition to the truck shaking like the old truck, the check engine light was on. I immediately called the Bob Masse, Bob told me to drop the truck off and they would have a look at it. After I dropped the truck off to the dealership, they had it for five days. Bob Masse had called me to say that the check engine light had been repaired, but they were waiting on new tires to come in, as they thought the shaking was once again from "Flat Spots" on the tires. Two days later I was notified from the service department that the truck was ready for pickup. There were no new tires on the truck. Bob Masse said no new tires.

For the first time I purchased a brand new vehicle off a dealership lot…What a mistake. While the dealership itself was an awful experience I thought it was worth it for a Chevy Silverado. After all my previous one was so reliable. WRONG. The first issue I found was I was unable to shift into reverse to back out of the driveway of a fire station I volunteer at. After driving forward a couple times and shutting the vehicle off and shifting multiple times I had to be towed out in reverse. I was able to drive home but the transmissions slipped once and the vehicle slowed abruptly. The check engine light was now on. I dropped the vehicle off at the dealership over the weekend and on Monday they called and informed me the 2024 Silverado misfired once and nothing was wrong with the transmission. There was nothing they could do. About two months later I was driving to work as a career firefighter/paramedic when my vehicles check engine light came on and a message informed me that I was in “reduced acceleration mode”. I slowly and carefully made my way to work and brought the truck to the dealership after my shift. The check engine light was now on again. They informed me later that day that I had a faulty valve body in my transmission. They “unfortunately” could not give me a completion date on my repair as they had no ETA for the replacement part. It appears the part is in high demand. This makes sense as a quick google search shows this is a widely known issue with the 10 speed transmission. So far I have been unable to get a rental vehicle between the dealership and GM. Aside from my house my 2024 Silverado is the largest purchase of my life. And at 15,000 miles I am without it for the foreseeable future. As a first responder the communities I serve depend on me to respond from home at any hour. My family and I are living in a DIY renovation while also starting a farm business. I need a dependable vehicle and regret spending $53,000 on a new vehicle. I have more to say.

We have had four previously documented issues with the electrical, brake and engine in our truck. Today, we were advised by the dealer that the truck had been fixed, and a new ECM had been installed. They advised they drove the truck for 100 miles and there were no issues. We picked the truck up and on the way home, while on the highway, the truck went into low power mode, the brakes went out, the check engine light and slip light came on. The dash began flashing detection warning lights (see attached photos): Brake system failure 62 MPH top speed, Service steering column lock, Reduced Acceleration drive with care, Service ESC, Service traction control. We immediately turned around and went back to the dealership and showed them what was going on. They took photographs and had the technician come out to look at the vehicle. He looked at the lights and codes and admitted he does not know what is going on. The service manager said that the company representative was coming tomorrow (10/21/25) and that he was going to speak with him and recommend a buyback. Currently selling our ‘23 F-150 Lightning Lariat and going to take a bath on it, but the lease saved us $500/month vs the loan on the Lightning and the... 6784C2Vette replied Jun 11, 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV General Discussion Forum ED2016 Jan 30, 2025 2025 SEV 2WT/5WT/8WT - real life cons and pros and general advice to new buyers"

"Dos Cylindros May 27, 2025 New Guy. New LT Extended Range Just took delivery of a new LT extended range about two weeks ago. Absolutely amazing truck and my first personally owned EV. One question...I want to order some all-weather floor mats, but it seems like the usual suspects only make them for either the WT trim or the RST (with mid... 2447Dos Cylindros replied May 27, 2025 New Member Introductions jordanhart1985 Jun 1, 2025"

"3554flyinglow replied Jun 3, 2025 GMC Sierra EV Discussion Forum TheWoo Jun 16, 2025 Beast of a road tripper+ towing I had a chance to enjoy the real reason I traded my Lightning for the Sierra EV Denali Max Range on Saturday. Such a better trip than I would have otherwise experienced. I live in Kansas City, recently sold my off-road camping trailer, and met the buyer in Norman, OK. So, I had to tow my... 8758TheWoo replied Jun 26, 2025"

"Car is parked in the garage, about 50-60F overnight. One of the reasons why I traded it in to get a change. The Silverado was about about 130 miles away from home, based on a 60 temp, I am getting about 360 miles. I think I can definitely work with that. If I am truly getting 300 during the winter, I think I’ll be super happy. #10· May 25, 2025 Running winter tires will stop the rate about 10% and another 15 to 20% in the cold for sure. I am up here in Canada and the truck does great in the winter time period. Drive the truck 24 hours without turning it off at -39F -39 C blowing through 6 inches of snow for 450kms then 2 foot drifts for another 300 kms and for about 400kms per charge. The next 900 kms the roads were clear at those cold temperatures and did 565kms in a 100 to 10% charge. Still very reasonable. #11· May 25, 2025 Photo attached of the travel when the risers were clear and sunny out running 18 inches blizzack tires on my 4WT."

Mine is white. You know what they say about assuming things, but I assumed everything was working on the truck. Oh well. Supercrise can not recognize my face.. over and over again it fails. I have tried different steering wheel... 9822Chevy\_AAron replied Mar 3, 2025"

"Max Charge Rate Doesn't Mean Sh*t It's all about the curve. Recently in a Model 3 vs Ioniq 5 10-80% test, the Model 3 peaked twice as high at 250kW vs the Ioniq's 125kW, but the Ioniq still finished slightly faster. Why is that? Well, the Model 3 charge curve drops right away and the Ioniq (really all eGMP vehicles) hold steady for much longer. The same can be said the Cybertruck Charge curve vs the Silverado EV or even the F150 Lightnings measly 150kW peak, but very strong curve. On a road trip, what really matters is the **average** kW from 10-80% and the range that 10-80% gets you. 10-80% charge time can also be used. This is why the Porsche Taycan is the fastest road tripping EV, its charge curve **and** peak rate are insane.. So the next time you're comparing EVs and want to know how fast it charges, do not be fooled by the peak charge rate. It's more of a marketing scheme vs real world charging performance. 10-80% time is key along with range."

"UPDATE: My point here was really to show the worst case scenario for a towing use case for the Silverado EV with a Max Range pack. Obviously aerodynamics are the biggest contributor to range loss, and my car hauler is an 8.5 W x 7.5 T x 24.0 L rectangular box, which is pretty much the worst aerodynamics you can get."
