The 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning PRO 4WD Extended Range is rated at 580 hp, 320 miles of EPA range and a 125 kWh battery, and a mid-pack composite means the records-and-test-drive call matters more than the headline.
Score read
A 71/100 makes this worth comparing, not chasing. Software and driver-assist score is 92/100, but range and efficiency score is only 55/100. Reddit threads cluster around range and software tech — verify both against the service records. Treat missing repair records as a price problem, not a footnote.
Price context
This trim started from $54,995 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.
Who this is for
✓ Good for
- ⏱ Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging
✗ Avoid if you are a
- ↦ Road tripper Long trips, needs DC fast network
- $ Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation
Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (55/100).
Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.
- Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.
Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 320-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Dealers make ~$12,609 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 17 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

I was making a road trip in my 2024 F150 Lightning Lariat. I pulled up to a Tesla supercharger. I turned the car off and attempted to plug in but the cable was about three inches too short. So I got back in the truck, turned it back on and put it in gear for the last three inches of travel. The truck accelerated dramatically. It clipped two charging stations, hopped a curb and went into a field, headed for a major lane of traffic. I rode the brake as hard as I could and it continued to accelerate. I threw it in neutral and finally got control of it, just short of the road. I turned the vehicle off and back on and drove out of the field, the truck behaving normally. I finished the trip and returned home without incident. In reviewing the experience in my mind, I can't make mistaking the accelerator for the brake pedal make sense. You can't turn the vehicle on without pressing the brake pedal. You can't put it in gear without pressing the break pedal. And the fact that it continued to accelerate after hitting the charger doesn't sound like a pedal mistake. I have never found the human factors of the F150 to be challenging - it is very straight forward to drive. I also don't think I could have accidentally hit the cruise control. You can't accidentally engage the cruise control from a standing stop. I do always use one-pedal driving.

Hi There, i wanted to report a situation with my Ford F150 Lightning I brought this monster truck last December'24 and everything worked until today when i hit a issue with the break Me and my wife went to Costco for weekend Shopping, i was trying to park to a very comfortable parking position; after getting in, I reversed the car to make it align with the parking line. Right after that i changed the position to drive slowly role it forward to adjust my parking, the truck started accelerating forward. I pressed the break hard and hard it would not stop. Imagine its Costco, lot of people around me, luckily it was trees and mulch area Infront, and Imagine its Costco, lot of people around me, luckily it was trees and mulch area Infront, and there was a traffic board. The Truck hit the traffic pole and stopped hanging over the mulch area. Everyone around me was screaming and looking at me. Through traffic stopped and took diversion, i pulled back slowly, guess what, the car would not come back to the parking lot again. I press the reverse and accelerate to get back to the parking space, but car is still going forward, scary. I stopped the engine and again tried to reverse; it worked. I swear to God that i never hit the acceleration since it's a parking spot, why would i do that... Car still went forward, so it's a genuine bug in the Ford 150 which needs to be fixed, otherwise its going to hurt or kill people I still have loan to pay for this car, but after todays incident i will not take his car out again, Unless Ford give me proper explanation and fixes. I read many similar stories in Rediit, so i think this is real issue. Other wise why the car wont stop even i press th break pedal, remember i configure this car with one pedal, but still nothing worked. Any help in sorting this out is higly appreciated, i am more worried about the risk of the public's life with this kind of issues where i cannot stop the car even after pressing the break, its really scary

I was on the on-ramp and accelerated to get to freeway speed nothing crazy. The truck took off even with my foot off the pedal. I braked hard to avoid rear ending the vehicle in front.. Started slowing down took my foot off the brake and it did it again... braked hard again, hit the hard shoulder then it went back to normal. Lucky it was a 5 lane freeway...

Ford issued a recall for Ford Lightnings produced from November 2023 to February 2024, for the front ball joint nut falling off. Causing a loss of control, suspension and all steering input, later crashing. New truck with 700 miles. Fords guesstimate of 12000 trucks, going by the month math is more likely than not well over 24000 affected vehicles. MY TRUCK WAS MANUFACTURED JUNE 2024. My husband MOVED/unscrewed the aforementioned nut, off the left upper ball joint WITH THE FINGERS ON HIS HAND. The nut was loose. The upper ball joint appeared hand tight. FORD NEARLY KILLED US. I advised william at NHTSA and he hung the phone up on me. William needs to be terminated. William is apparently biased against gay men and/or retired law enforcement officers.

The vehicle has been in the shop two times due to rodents eating the wiring. Wiring insulation is derived from a plant (soy) based oil, which rodents eat. The truck could have had wiring eaten in any number of areas leading to loss of control.

Folding shifter issues with many F150s. Gets stuck in park or drive. Seems to be a rampant issue. Stuck in park is one thing, stuck in drive is extremely dangerous... Also causes service lights.

Gear Shifter stuck in D with amber light blinking constantly. At the same time, the Amber Wrench symbol appeared on the dash, with "Service vehicle soon" warning message. This indicates a Powertrain malfunction/Reduced Power issue. Vehicle towed to nearest Ford dealer (Scenic Ford, Mount Airy, NC) with about 225 miles on odometer. I purchased this new '24 Lightning Lariat [XXX] online, and picked it up at Sheehy Ford in Gaithersburg, MD [XXX], with 47 miles on odometer. The above issues occurred [XXX] as I was driving the vehicle home from Maryland to my home in Georgia. These problems occurred the same day I drove the new vehicle off the dealer lot. Additionally, the Gear Shifter has never folded down as its meant to fold down, enabling a flat work surface between the two front seats. This situation was present at Sheehy Ford when I picked it up brand new on [XXX]. I have an appointment at my local dealer, Akins Ford, Winder, GA, May 14, 2025 at 10am to have these issues assessed. My vehicle has a broken backup camera (extremely blurry, barely or unusable). It has not functioned properly since the vehicle had about 2,500 miles on it, around 15 December 2024. It now has 7,300 miles on it and the manufacture has not remedied the situation. The backup camera is currently on back order (since January 2025) by the dealership. The dealership implied that it was likely on backorder because there was a high demand for them since they were breaking frequently.

I was involved in a rear-end collision caused by a vehicle abruptly moving into my lane while traveling at a slower speed. From the time the vehicle entered my lane to the time of the collision was approximately one second. Despite this timeframe, the anti-collision warning system and automatic emergency braking (AEB) functionality in my Ford vehicle did not activate or alert me before the impact. Additionally, I have observed that the adaptive cruise control and Blue Cruise systems in my vehicle do not react until a vehicle in front is fully out of the lane (for acceleration) or fully in the lane (for deceleration). This delayed reaction may have contributed to the system’s failure to engage in this incident. I believe this represents a potentially unsafe functionality in the collision avoidance system, as it may not adequately respond to rapidly changing traffic conditions. I am reporting this to make sure it is investigated to help improve the safety of these systems and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The vehicle moved forward with the shifter set in reverse. My safety and the safety of others was put at risk because the vehicle moved in the opposite direction from that indicated both by the position of the shifter and by the audible backup warning. Pressing the accelerator caused the vehicle to move forward instead of reverse. This problem has not yet been reported to manufacturer. There were no warning lamps or messages. All indicators were normal. This occurred while parallel parking in a tight space between two cars on the left side of the road. I backed in as far as I could go to the car behind, then turned the wheel and pulled in close to the car in front. I repeated the back and forth two more times to align the vehicle with the curb. At this point the shifter was in drive position and vehicle was close to the car in front. I shifted to reverse and gently pressed the accelerator to move away from the car in front. Instead, the vehicle moved forward and bumped the car in front. I applied the brake, shifted to park, then shifted to reverse. Again, the vehicle moved forward and bumped the car in front. I applied the brake and shifted into drive, then into reverse. Again the vehicle moved forward. The audible backup warning could be heard whenever the shifter was in reverse, and it stopped when taken out of reverse. At this point I turned off the vehicle. I started it again about a minute later. At this point it shifted correctly. I shifted to reverse and the vehicle moved backward as expected. I was able to finish parking as usual.

What Owners Are Saying
"Why I Bought Another F-150 Lightning A couple months ago I was involved in a pretty scary car accident. A driver ran a red light and T-boned my truck while I was driving with my young son. The impact was pretty significant, all side airbags deployed and the truck absorbed the hit pretty well. When the insurance process finally played out and it was totaled, I had a decision to make. I looked at other options and considered switching vehicles. But the more I thought about it, the more it felt like the Lightning had already proven itself to me in the most important way possible. So I stayed committed and ended up getting another 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum. It is not easy to find them so I actually had this one shipped from Illinois to me in Virginia. I finally recently finished adding on all the accessories that I had on the previous one. A lot of which I found via this reddit. I genuinely love this truck. The performance, the quiet ride, the tech, and now I have experience with how well it protects the people inside. Just wanted to share in case anyone is on the fence or wondering how these trucks hold up in real world situations. Stay safe out there."
"My experience finding a 2022 XLT ER w/Max Towing and trading it one year later for a 2024 Flash ER w/Max Towing TL;DR: Bought a ‘22 XLT ER Max Tow with 39 miles in March ‘25 for $42k, traded it in March of ‘26 for $39k on a ‘24 Flash ER Max Tow with 180 miles for $49,970. Feels like I found two excellent deals and now I love my lightning even more. (The ‘22 is now on the dealers website again at $42k) I wanted to share my Lightning journey because it ended up being a mix of skepticism, two ridiculous deals, and finally getting the exact spec I wanted. ⸻ How I got here (not a comparison, just context) My first EV was a Kia EV6, and what it really did for me was simple: It made me realize I loved driving an EV. That’s it. From there, I knew I wanted my next vehicle to be: an EV… but a truck I looked at options: • Rivian — super impressive, but too expensive • No CarPlay (dealbreaker for me) • And honestly, I didn’t like the idea of paying that much and then feeling weird about using it like a real truck That’s what pushed me toward the Lightning. ⸻ Then I found a deal I couldn’t ignore I came across a 2022 Lightning XLT ER with Max Tow: • 39 miles (basically new, still in plastic) • $42K purchase price • Sticker was $66,494 From everything I could find at the time, it was the lowest mileage + lowest price ER w/ Max Tow in the country, so I jumped on it. It had a great spec: • ER battery • Max Tow • Pro Power 9.6kW • Spray-in bedliner • Tailgate step And I thought it had everything I wanted. ⸻ The mistake: adaptive cruise I specifically wanted adaptive cruise, and I mistakenly thought the XLT had it. Once I realized it didn’t, that stuck with me. Didn’t ruin the truck — I actually loved it — but it was enough that I started thinking: “If I’m doing this long-term, I want the exact spec I actually want.” ⸻ The 2022 XLT — what actually mattered The truck completely won me over: • It just feels like a real truck • EV torque makes it ridiculously fun • The frunk is insanely useful • Daily driving is effortless And importantly: • It never felt like something I had to baby • I used it like a truck, and it handled it just fine That was a big difference vs how I felt about something like the Rivian at its price point. ⸻ The hunt for my perfect spec After buying the XLT and missing out on the adaptive cruise, I kept researching and dialed in what I wanted: • Flash trim • Cloth seats (I prefer cloth over leather) • ER battery • Max Tow • Adaptive cruise / BlueCruise I also knew i preferred the 18” wheels of the XLT and definitely not the 22’s on the upper spec. To me the best Lightning ride quality is the 18’s, with the 20’s being good enough and the 22’s just way too harsh. I wasn’t in a rush — just watching the market. ⸻ Déjà vu: I found another steal Then it happened again… same place: Group 1 Ford (formerly Maxwell Ford) in Austin • 2024 Lightning Flash • \~180 miles •"

"Alright, I see a lot of skepticism about me getting \~3.1 mi/kWh in my 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning, so let’s break it down with real numbers and the exact conditions that led to it. The Math Behind My Efficiency January 2025 • Total Energy Used: 932.138 kWh • Total Miles Driven: 2,896 mi • Efficiency: 2,896 mi ÷ 932.138 kWh = 3.11 mi/kWh February 2025 • Total Energy Used: 909.851 kWh • Total Miles Driven: 2,827 mi • Efficiency: 2,827 mi ÷ 909.851 kWh = 3.11 mi/kWh So yeah, the numbers don’t lie—I’m consistently getting 3.1 mi/kWh, and here’s why: What’s Helping My Efficiency 1. Driving Speed & Style: • I average 40-50 mph in traffic, which is way more efficient than highway speeds (65+ mph kills efficiency). • When I do hit the highway, I use BlueCruise/adaptive cruise control to smooth out acceleration and braking. 2. Regen Braking: • I use One-Pedal Driving 100% of the time. That means every time I slow down, I’m recovering energy instead of wasting it on friction brakes. 3. No Cabin Heat, Just Seat & Steering Wheel Heaters: • I don’t use cabin heat at all. Instead, I just run the heated seats and heated steering wheel. • Running the heat would drop efficiency to \~2.0 mi/kWh or worse, which is probably what’s happening to some of y’all in cold climates. 4. Tires & Aerodynamics: • Stock tires, kept properly inflated (\~42 PSI, but adjusted with temps). • I have a tonneau cover, which helps reduce drag at higher speeds. 5. Weather & Load: • No heavy cargo or towing—just my 50-mile daily commute. • Not dealing with extreme cold. If I were in -20°F, my numbers would be way lower. Why Others Might See Lower Efficiency If you’re getting closer to 2.0 mi/kWh, here’s why that could be happening: • Highway speeds (65+ mph) = More aero drag → Lower efficiency • No tonneau cover = Open truck bed creates turbulence • Cabin heat use = Major energy drain • Colder temps = Batteries don’t perform as well in freezing conditions • No One-Pedal Driving = Less regenerative braking → More energy lost • Towing/Heavy Load = More weight, more energy used Bottom Line I get that 3.1 mi/kWh sounds high to some people, but it’s not crazy if you’re mostly in lower-speed traffic, using regen braking, and skipping cabin heat. If you’re doing highway driving in the cold with cabin heat blasting, yeah, you’ll be closer to 2.0 mi/kWh or worse."
"tdeane3130 Feb 17, 2025 100 mile range!!! Decided to drive my 2024 Flash (extended battery) from San Antonio. 320 mileage range has not happened since I bought in Dec 24, but I do a lot of highway driving so I learned to live with 200-230 mileage. But while I love my truck in San Antonio, I could have NOT been more disappointed driving... 262.6KChasingCoral replied Mar 1, 2025 F-150 Lightning Charging & Batteries raytoews Jul 12, 2025 Range extender Has anyone tried putting, say a 5000 watt generator in the bed, plug it into the 220v 20a plug in the box. Is there a diode on that plug to stop power back in. Would extend the range a bit. The charge plug on the fender shuts the truck off."

My software updates were stuck on 6.8.1 for a yr and Ford didn't have any answers for the problem other than "It's based on VIN #s". Really? All the way back to 6.8.1? "New York Times: How Ford’s F-150 Lightning, Once in Hot Demand, Lost Its Luster Some buyers said the electric Lightning did not meet expectations, and Ford has slashed its production plans for the pickup because sales are lagging. By Neal E. Boudette Feb. 7, 2024 In July Michael Puglia drove home with what seemed like the coolest vehicle he’d ever own — a Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. It was big enough to haul around his children and all their hockey gear. He’d never have to gas it up, and the ride was exhilarating. “It’s unbelievably fast and responsive,” said Mr. Puglia, a pediatric anesthesiologist in Ann Arbor, Mich. “The technology is amazing.” But as cooler weather arrived, the truck’s range — or how far it could travel before needing to be plugged in — dropped significantly. Once, after Mr. Puglia had driven 35 miles to an ice rink, his range fell by 73 miles. Another time, a 60-mile jaunt reduced his range by 110 miles. Several trips to the dealership for software updates didn’t fix the problem, leaving Mr. Puglia wondering whether he should keep the $79,000 truck. “People say ‘range anxiety’ — it’s like it’s the driver’s fault,” he said. “But it’s not our fault. It’s actually they’re not telling us what the real range is. The truck says it’s 300 miles. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten that.” Mr. Puglia’s short trip from excitement to frustration reflects the recent ups and downs across the electric vehicle sector. Twelve months ago, sales of battery-powered cars seemed poised for a sustained takeoff in the United States. Sales rose 46 percent last year, exceeding more than one million vehicles for the first time and making up more than 7 percent of all new light vehicles sold in 2023. But by the final three months of 2023, the pace of sales had slowed, and automakers’ optimism had turned to caution. In the last three months of the year, according to the California New Car Dealers Association, new-vehicle registrations of electric vehicles fell from the previous three months in California — the largest market for battery-powered cars and trucks. Ford Motor, General Motors and others are now slowing down electric vehicle investments. G.M. is also delaying the sale of some new electric models and making plans to produce plug-in hybrids, which dealers say are drawing more customer interest. “You had a wave of early adopters, but the mainstream consumer is just not jumping up and down for E.V.s,” said Marc Cannon, an independent consultant who until recently was the chief customer experience officer at AutoNation, the country’s largest automotive retailer. “The manufacturers are putting out product, but the consumer is like, ‘We’re not participating.’” Demand for the Lightning slackened, and the reservation backlog all but disappeared. In 2023, Ford sold 24,000 Ligh"
"In the 2010's there was a show "Pip and Freddy" song called "be brave" that i used to get my daughter over the fear of an accident, she was under the age of 6. I have put a lot of thought about if or when that happens, and since Ford abdicated to anti-environmental stance on EV production, i may pivot to GM's Ultium platform. I was a GM/Chevy person my whole life and I've been so proud to declare this specific vehicle won me over. But now i have to change my tune."
