The 2024 Rivian R1T Performance Dual Large (21in) packs 665 hp, 352 miles of EPA range and a 129 kWh battery, and the score gets it into the conversation; battery and service records decide whether to make an offer.
Score read
A 72/100 makes this good enough to inspect, not good enough to skip diligence. Software and driver-assist score is 88/100, but range and efficiency score is only 56/100. Owners on Reddit repeatedly cite build quality and owner satisfaction as recurring problems. Treat missing repair records as a price problem, not a footnote.
Price context
This trim started from $80,000 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.

Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (56/100).
Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.
- Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.
Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 352-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Dealers make ~$14,028 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 16 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

While traveling at highway speed on Interstate 95, the vehicle experienced a complete and sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle would not respond to the Vehicle Restart function. The driver was able to safely pull to the shoulder from the right lane. The vehicle was towed to a Rivian service center, where technicians identified a low-voltage event matching a known Rivian engineering investigation. Rivian confirmed no current repair exists and that engineering is actively working on software improvements. The vehicle was returned unrepaired after 13 days. Rivian also replaced the 12V battery under warranty at a prior service visit in July 2025 for a related electrical system defect. Two field service actions (FSAM-1507, FSAM-1794) have also been performed on this vehicle.

The entertainment and gauge cluster displays begin to slow down and stutter, eventually leading to a full reboot. This causes the ADAS view, as well as the blind spot cameras, and reverse camera to display a still image, even while the vehicle is moving, or display no image at all. Also, if this happens while Highway Drive Assist is active, the state of the system is not displayed and an audible chime is played.

I believed my car had a problem with the seals of the windows allowing severe wind noise. After attempted repair the problem persisted and, on closer inspection, it became evident that the driver side door is mis-installed and crooked. Rivian attempted to reprair this and only made it worse. The amount of wind/road noise that is coming in now is as if the windows was open. The door frame vibrates and whistles at speed. The mobile tech doesn't feel this is repairable but Rivian won't take responsibility for it. They have denied my BBB claim and I am pursuing a lemon lawyer.

Rivian alerted me that there was a “service action” related to the hub, and while waiting for that appointment, the hub came loose while driving and began grinding against the brakes and went into full system shutdown. The truck needed to be towed and the hub and brakes needed to be replaced. The truck was undrivae while driving at highway speeds and could have crashed. When questioned, the service center reiterated that this was “not a recall” but simply a head up. The repairs were covered under warranty.

What Owners Are Saying
"2+ Years and 27,000 miles I have an early VIN R1T. After more than 2 years (March, 2022) and 27,000, I thought someone might wonder what long (ish) term ownership looks like. Put simply, the Rivian R1T is the best vehicle I have ever owned, driven or ridden in. That includes: BMW, Tesla, Bentley, Subaru, Honda, Toyota (180,000 miles on that one), Mercedes, and Ford. The R1T has gone on long west coast road trips to visit national and state parks. It has been overlanding through coastal mountains. We go to the mountains to ski. We trailer motorcycles to remote areas. One of my kids is a rower so we are constantly dealing with piles of wet and dirty crap. Pets and people are in and out a lot. Even with above average abuse, the interior remains immaculate. The gear tunnel is so practical and useful. I thought it was a gimmick at first, but is so much more. The seats are the most comfortable car seats especially on long drives. The general build quality continues to impress me. Oh and the truck is so much fun to drive and quick off the line. My only gripe is the charging pad and dirt trap in the console. That is a small price to pay for a vehicle I am happy to get in every day."
"Another Owner review... I know these get redundant but feel like I have a bit of a unique perspective bc I've owned wayyy to many other cars and can compare. To start here is list of cars I've owned (in order) 1996 Volvo S60 2000 Saturn Ion 1999 Ford Explorer 2004 Chevy Cobalt 2004 Toyota 4Runner 2014 BMW 3 series 2015 Prius 2016 3 series 2018 4Runner 2019 5 series 2019 Ram 1500 2017 Tacoma 2018 Audi RS3 2018 Tesla Model X 2018 BMW M2 2021 Chevy Tahoe 2021 Land Rover Defender 2021 F150 Lariat 2022 F150 Lightning 2022 Porsche Taycan 2020 Mercedes GLS 2022 Tesla M3 2023 Rivian R1T To start here is my ranking of best vehicles I've owned in order 5. M3 4. F-150 Lariat 3. GLS 2. Model X 1. R1T Experience with R1T: I have owned the R1T for a few weeks now, have already had a few issues so I don't think I'm being idealistic, but this is hands down the best overall vehicle I have ever had. Size: The size is perfect. I am not a contractor so while I have always loved having a truck the full size was just too much to navigate in city setting and midsize was always a little cramped inside and no luxuries on midsize. Ride quality: The ride quality of the R1T is impressive and I'm surprised at some of the reviews I have read. The GLS is probably the most comfortable riding car I've owned, but the R1T is easily second. M2 most fun car to drive but can't really compare that to a truck. For the size tires (20in AT) it handles everything well and has great on road manors. Storage/Interior: The convenience of the storage options is huge and interior packaging is top of the line. Overall quality is leaps and bounds above Tesla and really does feel luxury. It's by no means BMW/Merc level but it's really nice. Tech: This is another area I am surprised people complain about so much, especially knowing it will only get better. I think it's way better than Sync and only pales to Tesla. I have had CarPlay on so many cars but honestly think the best overall experience is Tesla which does not have it. So I (in minority) am glad Rivian is focusing on their UI and not letting CarPlay take over. I also LOVE the screen sizes and layout. The thing I hated most about the lighting was the screen. It looks ridiculous, I much preferred the 12in horizontal screen in the Lariat. Speakers: probably the best standard system I have encountered. I do have the meridian system so can't speak to in house. Overall value: I don't know how you beat it. I think under $120k it holds up against anything. Why I'm excited about the future for Rivian: with everything I love there are so many places they can improve the vehicle. And that's a good thing bc I think it allows them to make small changes and stay competitive in the market. Little conveniences could help push the upper price (soft close doors, audio upgrades, interior choices, photochromic roof, continued UI upgrades) I also think they have a really great chance to corner a unique sedan market. "#25· Jan 12, 2024 My Quad Adventure having 21" in snow mode is mind blowing. The tread looks like a hwy. tread. It is the AT OEM, the rubber must be soft at subfreezing. I did a blizzard up and down major grade zero slippage. The front tires had only 3/32" on them! This makes no sense to me, if I was not there, I would not think it is possible. #29· Jan 12, 2024 > kamster said: > > While it seems the 21" wheels give the best range it seems like they also have the worst options when it comes to replacement tires? Since I don't see rock climbing in my future is it worth swapping to the 22" wheels, loosing a small bit of range but gaining better options for replacements? > > Thoughts? > > > Click to expand... I love the 21's on my R1T, there will be alternatives available soon but I like the stock tires and will likely buy them as replacements since the tire warranty is longer than the one we got from Rivian."
"#6· Aug 31, 2024 @Doc, thanks for your response and recommendations. Worked great! #7· Aug 31, 2024 I'm experiencing the same proximity warning and seat memory issues since the update in my Gen 1 R1T. In addition, I'm seeing substantially increased vampire drain, something that also seems to be a fairly widespread update-related phenomenon. #8· Aug 31, 2024"
"Ventilated seats were amazing on the 800+ mile drive. It was a really hot day and the sun was beating throughout the drive, the ventilated seats felt so cold I thought my back was wet. But that’s where it ended for the ventilated seats, the day after I got home from the drive, the ventilated seats were maybe 5 percent of the power they used to have. I can no longer feel it on my back. The legs work maybe 20 percent. This is on max setting. I had to go to the service center for them to install the tonneau cover and I brought up the ventilated seat issue. The tech right away said yea I can’t feel it on the back. After checking the 2 demo vehicles and the loaner they gave me, there was no difference in the ventilated seats. They all felt like mine. I think this is a major issue Rivian needs to address. The service manager said they can warranty the seats out but I don’t think this issue has been addressed. If I get new seats I’ll end up with the same problem again. This is an issue owners will need to escalate in order for there to be a change. This issue is a great disappointment that it has not been addressed. The tech manager said he would escalate it and follow up with me, but I haven’t heard anything and doubt I will."

"Rivian R1T QM to R1S Gen 2 Dual Max - Don't do it "Sometimes we don't truly appreciate the value of something until it's gone." Every day I drive my Gen 2 R1S, that sentiment hits home. My family situation changed, and I needed a bigger car. I could have made do with my R1T, but after seeing all the glowing reviews of the R1S, I decided to take the plunge. I went for the Dual-Motor Max Pack for the extra range. For reference, my R1T had a VIN in the 8000 range, and my R1S is in the 54,000 range. **Negatives:** 1. **Acceleration:** The Dual-Motor Max doesn’t hold a candle to the Quad-Motor. If you’re used to the Quad’s acceleration, the Dual will leave you disappointed. The way it is tuned, it feels sluggish. 2. **Suspension:** The Gen 2 R1S suspension feels floaty. It lacks the stability and sporty feel of the R1T. 3. **Audio:** The audio system has taken an enormous hit. I’ve made a separate post detailing this. 4. **Material Quality:** The plastics used on the doors, steering wheel, and other areas feel cheaper. The cabin no longer has that premium touch. It’s hard to put into words, but once you sit inside, you’ll notice. 5. **Doors:** The doors feel lighter and less substantial. The locking mechanism has also changed for the worse, losing that solid, high-quality feel. 6. **Range:** Despite the new motor's supposed efficiency, there’s little difference in real-world range. My R1T had a 135 kWh battery, while the R1S has a 142 kWh battery, but I’ve only noticed a 10-15 mile difference. In fact, I used to get around 330 miles on a single charge with my R1T, and conserve mode was always there when needed. 7. **Automatic Front-Wheel Drive:** This feature is enabled by default on highways, and in some situations where I needed quick acceleration, the vehicle hesitated, taking a moment to switch to the rear motor and regain traction. 8. **Cabin Noise:** The HVAC system in the R1S is noticeably louder compared to the R1T, even at the lowest setting. I’m not sure if the cooling systems are different, but the noise inside the cabin is significant. 9. Service issues - Car has alignment issues, I check for service dates, it shows availability in December. 10. Software issues - So many error notifications. Usb c ports stop working every other day. Have to reboot the vehicle to fix. **Things I knew but still miss:** 1. The 12V charger in the dash—essential for someone on the road frequently and needing quick charging for multiple devices. 2. One year less on the warranty. 3. Reduced frunk storage space in the new model. 4. No charging improvements 5. The rear seats, 2nd row and 3rd are very difficult to adjust. 6. Console charger, still unusable. It's been 3 years. Come on now. **Positives:** 1. The camera. Great picture quality. While they might have made improvements under the hood, the overall cheapening of the vehicle has tarnished my day-to-day experience. In hindsight, I wish I had kept my R1T. It feels like Rivian has done a ba"
