Buyer brief · 306 words

The 2022 Lucid Air Dream R AWD w/19-inch wheels comes with 520 miles of EPA range, 300 kW fast charging and a 112 kWh battery, and with 14 recall campaigns on this make/year, the VIN lookup is the first thing you do.

Score read

A 68/100 makes this a paperwork-and-test-drive decision. Range and efficiency score is the cleaner read at 82/100; owner feedback score needs more diligence at 50/100. Owners on Reddit repeatedly cite owner satisfaction and software tech as recurring problems. A clean VIN lookup matters more than the headline count.

Price context

Bring your own comps Pull current comps before negotiating

This trim started from $169,000 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.

Who this is for

✓ Good for

  • Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging
  • Road tripper Long trips, needs DC fast network

✗ Avoid if you are a

  • $
Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Verify Owner feedback is the part to read carefully (50/100).

Mitigation Read the complaint themes and ask whether this VIN has already had those issues repaired.

  • Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.

Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 520-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Read the complaint themes, not just the count, and ask the seller whether those issues have shown up on this VIN.

The Financing Room · What Actually Happens

Dealers make ~$11,519 on the average car loan.

After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.

On July 21, I was stopped behind another vehicle. Using 1 pedal driving with no roll feature. There was front camera error message as well as traction control warning light on. My car started to move forward on it's own so I inadvertently hit the acceleration initially before I stepped on the brakes - car did not stop initially and I rear ended the stopped car in front of me. Lucid kept my car for a week reviewing the logs and concluded there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and the incident was driver caused. I have never stomped on the go pedal from a standing stop before. The car moved forward on it's own before I inadvertently stepped on the accelerator pedal.

Lucid's adaptive cruise control implementation does not slow for stopped highway traffic. The adaptive cruise control will continue to speed at the set speed right into the rear end of stopped vehicles unless the driver disengages the adaptive cruise control. This easily could result in a high speed rear end collision. This needs to be fixed. The vehicle should slow and stop if necessary for stopped traffic. This is not a one off occurrence. This occurs all the time with all Lucid vehicles.

Safety Dec 4, 2024

I want to inform you about a potential safety issue regarding the Lucid Air. A few weeks ago I was in an accident in a parking garage and I believe this was due to a malfunction in the car. The reason I am writing this letter is in hopes of preventing future accidents. In this case, luckily no one was hurt but considering the extend of the damage, that could have easily not been the case. I was coming down the ramp of a parking garage and making the 180 degree turn common in parking garages. As I was making the turn in the last 90 degrees, the car locked up and accelerated at a very rapid rate. My car and the car I hit were totaled with even extensive damage to another car also. A very high speed would have been required to cause so much damage. Please see attached videos and photos. Of note, one time before my Lucid completely shut off while driving on our local loop requiring to be towed to Lucid to be fixed. Let’s see I can’t scroll that watch I can’t get down here blue color, BMW, famous color. That’s literally the one but the red for this. T We never received a full understanding of what happened but were told a team from the main Lucid office had to come to repairs the battery mechanism. I understand that I am the one that could have hit the accelerator but I believe I was pressing the brake with no response. If I did hit the accelerator, how could I have generated so much speed in such a short distance. The car was also set for high level regenerative braking. The car log should be able to tell if the accelerator or brake was pushed. As I said earlier, I hope an investigation can be done to help prevent any future accidents.

Car is running on version 2.0.68. Approached the car, handles presented themselves as per usual. The rear right passenger door wouldn’t open at all. Drove home and when in garage tried to open the rear right passenger door and still wouldn’t open. I climbed into the back of the car from the left hand side and tried to open the door from the inside using the “electric” method which is done by slightly pulling the door trigger. The door still wouldn’t open. I then tried to open it using the manual release method by pulling the door trigger right back and it still wouldn’t open the door. The manual method is designed as a backup measure should the electrics fail and you need to get out of the car. If we happened to be in an accident we wouldn’t have been able to exit the car from the rear passenger side as the manual safety backup clearly failed. It’s clearly controlled via software as upon rebooting the car the door started working again. I question why software is controlling a manual release. I reported the issue to Lucid but given this is a serious safety concern I’m reporting it here as well.

It appears that Lucid has a defect with the design of their airbags. I have been able to replicate sitting in every Lucid Air vehicle I have tried an issue I discovered with mine which will cause the passenger airbag to constantly turn in and off during driving. This has been escalated to the highest levels of Lucid where the statement is that the bags comply with NHTSA standards and I just need to change the way I am sitting. I have never had this issue in any other vehicles. So my belief is that there is either a fundamental design flaw with the implementation of the passenger airbag monitoring, or that the NHTSA testing standards are not sufficient. I have recorded how I sit and shared this information with Lucid. I will be happy to send to NHTSA as well.

2022 Lucid Air suffered a total loss of power without any warning at approximately 10 PM on July 29, 2023, while driving 65+ mph on the Jersey Turnpike. The car’s dashboard suddenly flashed “System Failure” and immediately started to decelerate. I had approximately 30 seconds to weave across 2 lanes of high speed traffic as the car steadily lost speed and fortunately there was a shoulder just wide enough for the car before it totally stopped forward progress. We could not exit the car as the passenger side was up against a 3 foot cement barrier that separated the 3 car lanes from 3 truck lanes and the driver’s side was just a foot from the inside lane of cars speeding by at over 65+ mph, I called Lucid Customer Service 3 times over the next 30 minutes and received an automated response each time that they would call back when a rep was available. My wife called 911 and the operator said she would send the state police and a tow truck. It took approximately 40 minutes for the state police and tow truck to arrive. The car’s hazard lights worked for approximately 20 minutes and then stopped leaving us in total darkness for the next 20 minutes as cars whizzed by on the turnpike at high speeds just a foot or two away. The state policeman told us that it was a very dangerous situation that we all had to exit asap. Just then, the car suddenly came back to life. The tow truck driver was able to drive it up a ramp and onto the flat bed of his truck. We climbed into his cab and he drove us for about 10 minutes until he could exit the turnpike and dropped us and the car off into a shopping center parking lot. At this point, the Lucid service center called me back. We explained what happened. He told us to leave the car there with the keys inside and the company would pick it up and take it to its nearest service center. We then called an Uber and went to a nearby hotel. I cannot comment any further on what happened after this point in time.

My lucid air’s emergency brakes have misjudged a situation and caused the car to lock its brakes for 3 seconds, making it inoperable. The first time happened on the interstate and the vehicle behind me had to go into the median to keep from rear ending me. I was completely stopped on a busy interstate. The second time, this morning, I was maneuvering around a vehicle into an open lane and the emergency brakes locked up. It had been raining and this caused the Lucid to slide directly into the vehicle I was maneuvering around. I was completely powerless to stop it. I have my emergency brakes set to lucids recommended setting - not it’s most sensitive setting. This is incredibly dangerous. The car does not consider it’s speed or road conditions before locking the brakes, taking the ability to maneuver away from the driver.

We have a long, approximately 70 yards, driveway. When backing up and reaching 5 mph the car brakes violently, causing me to make a three-point turn around so I go out facing forward Every software update, and I’ve; lost count in February alone, breaks our profiles and causes me to have to redo our profiles Often, 2 to 3 times per week, while driving in town (not on the highway using “Dream Drive/ Cruise Control”) the car will start to brake, warning me to pay attention and keep my hands on the wheel, all the while I have both hands on the wheel and I am driving the vehicle When starting often times the reverse camera will not work for up to 30 seconds Incorrect mileage range – I charged the vehicle to full with a range of 400 plus mile showing – I drove to Columbus Ohio – 70 miles aways at posted speed limits, with no aggressive acceleration, no additional weight (just me at 180 lbs) and when I reached Columbus I showed a range of 230 miles remaining and when I returned home I was under 100 miles remaining. Recap – range of 437 miles to start, traveled 141 miles, and had 89 miles remaining. The primary reason I purchased the Lucid over other EV manufacturers, was the range. Completely misleading and the car is now used only for local trips/in-town trips.

Incident 1: While driving to work, accelerated to pass a car on the right going approx 45 MPH. The dash showed a RED "Drive System Fault" and the car would no longer accelerate. The steering was fine and I changed to the left lane. After approximately 5 seconds, the dash and all internal screens when blank. I was able to pull off the main road to the entrance of a housing development and coasted to a stop about 20 feet off the main road. There was no power to turn on the flashers to warning other drivers existing the main road. Total time was approximately 10 seconds from warning light to stopped, dead car and approximately 0.2 of a mile. If this had occurred on a highway or a busy street, the car would have died on the main road WITHOUT any lights to signal other drivers. I called roadside assistance. After two attempts, they were able to "reboot" the car. They said I was able to drive it to work and would have a technician call to setup an inspection. The car was inspected and they said there were no issues found. INCIDENT 2: The next time I drove the car after the inspection, I was driving to work. Shortly after turning onto main street going approx 30 MPH, the RED "Drive System Fault" displayed on the dash. Again, I was not able to accelerate, but steering was fine. After approx 2 seconds, all internal screens went blank. I immediately turned into a Shopping Center entrance. The brakes seemed to apply as the car went from slow to complete stop. Total time was approximately 5 from warning light to stopped, dead car and less than 0.1 of a mile. Although all internal screens were blank, the flashers were able to be turned on. Although the flashers also turned off after 15 minutes. The car could not be "rebooted" and had to be towed. If I had not instantly recognized what was occurring, I would not have got the car off the main road. It is likely that if this occurred on the highway, it would have caused an accident.

Summary: Vehicle sometimes drives in the OPPOSITE direction of selected Gear Detail: When changing drive direction in a very specific inclined position, the Lucid Air might drive in the opposite direction to what the driver has selected. Youtube video demonstrating this issue: https://youtu.be/xTdIdEG6aCk What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Drive system malfunctioned. Vehicle drives forward when in Reverse. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Blocked the sidewalk, 9 inches from a wall. Expected the car to move backwards when it moved forward instead. Despite being in the correct gear. We could have easily hit a pedestrian. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I have reported it to Lucid on all available channels. Have not heard back from them. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No.

Q: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? A: Car lost all ability to move forward except for a very weak crawl of 1 or 2 miles per hour. The car is with the manufacturer at this point. Q: How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? A: Car stopped in the middle of traffic with no warning. I had to slowly move the car to the shoulder across lanes of traffic while going 2 mph. Q: Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? A: Yes. The problem is a hard failure and was not fixed by rebooting the car while on the shoulder. The car was transported nearly 300 miles to the Chicago service center where it is being diagnosed. Several drivers have reported the same problem on the Lucid Owner’s Forum. Go to https://lucidowners.com/ and search for ‘turtle mode’. Q: Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? A: The car is at the Lucid service center in Chicago (the manufacturer). Q: Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? A: Car operated normally until the failure occurred. The speedometer was replaced with a red warning symbol and message: ‘Drive System Fault, Pull Over and Contact Customer Care’.

My vehicle was in the garage and the drive train failed. No other details were provided to me by the manufacturer. There have been at least four other reports, in which vehicles were on the road when this occurred and the vehicles shutdown with little to no time to find a safe spot to pull over. This seems to be an issue with either the main EV battery or the 12V accessory battery.

This vehicle is designed for two 245/35r21 (HLC/99Y) tires on the front wheels, and two 265/35r21 (HLC/103Y) tires in the rear wheels. When I took delivery of the car from the manufacturer, it was incorrectly outfitted with three 245s and one 265; one of the rear wheels had an incorrect tire installed. Attempts to resolve the issue with Lucid have been fruitless, and I am concerned that it may be a widespread issue. ##Timeline##: [2022-09-26] -- I accepted delivery of my 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring [2022-11-26] -- I discovered that one of my rear tires (I don't recall which side) was incorrectly sized [2022-11-27] -- I reached out to Lucid customer care/warranty, and received a reply the following morning [2022-12-15] -- While taking a left turn in wet and cold conditions, the car briefly lost traction and ran over a curb, resulting in damage to the vehicle that would take several months to repair. There were no injuries nor third-party property damage. (I'm not sure if this loss of traction was related to the tire mismatch) [2023-02-09] -- I contacted Lucid again about the OEM tire mismatch issue. The Lucid team promptly replied with a promise of enlisting the service specialist team [2023-05-08] -- Repairs are completed by an third-party authorized Lucid service shop [2023-05-12] -- Having heard no response, I replied to the email thread again. The Lucid team promptly replied with a promise that they would follow up shortly. I have not heard from them.

245/35/R21, tire specifically made for Lucid. Small bump in road caused large bubble in sidewall. Lucid forums full of complaints about this. No replacement tires available in the US and no alternate available due to load rating. No promised time for more to be available. I had to borrow a loaner tire from lucid. I learned that Perilli is redesigning this tire with thicker sidewalls because of all the problems. No tire available until the new ones are available. Why wasn't this tire recalled for safety reasons? A bubble on a front tire is dangerous and the car should not be driven. Why is this not covered by a warrant replacement? A customer should not have to pay to replace a defective tire at the very least, they should prorate the cost based on miles driven. I'm filling this report because the situation is dangerous. If no replacement is available from Perilli or an alternate, owners are likely to continue driving with tire bubbles causing risk to themselves and others

We experienced our first tire blow out in July of 2023 while on a remote hwy in Oregon. We were travelling on a smooth wide road and all of sudden, there was a loud bang. We pulled over to find that there was approximately a 4" gash on the side wall of the front passenger tire. As Lucid does not equip their vehicles with spare tires, we required a long distance tow and tire replacement. Our mileage on the vehicle, at the time was approx 3,500. Last night, Sept 29th, 2023, the vehicle's tire pressure gauge lit up and advised that tire pressure was low on the right front tire. This is the same tire that was replaced in July. The vehicle is currently at odometer reading of 6,057. It showed pressure of 37 psi when the other tires were set to 38 psi. Our plan was to take it in this morning for a tire pressure check but before we could make it home, the tire pressure reading came on again showing 37 on the front passenger tire and 0 on the on the back passenger tire suddenly. We had to leave the vehicle parked because it was after hours and we it needed to be towed but we wanted to be certain that it was towed to a tire repair center that would have the tire in stock. When we took the car in today, we were informed there was an air bulge on the front passenger tire as well and that both passenger tires required replacement. The tire shop informed us this is a repeated common problem with Lucids, especially those with the 21" profile tires. After some online research, we realize other Lucid owners are having to replace their tires frequently because they are forming air bubbles that later burst and cause flat tires. Not only is this dangerous, were the vehicle to be travelling at high speeds, but Lucid will not own the problem. We believe Lucid is well aware of this matter but refuses to acknowledge it or claim responsibility for it. It seems incredulous that 3 tires have needed to be replaced on this vehicle in 1 year and just over 6,000 miles.

While driving the passenger seat back spontaneously started to move forward folding the passenger in half. The touch screen controls were unresponsive. I needed to stop the car and use the manual control buttons on the side of the seat in order to unfold the passenger.

Seat moved into the full forward and full forward tilt position without warning pinning my knees against the lower dash and my chest against the steering wheel. The manual override buttons on the side of the seat were inoperable to stop the movement. Fortunately this happened prior to leaving the garage. If it would have happened on the highway I would not have been able to control the car. Car is currently not driveable.

The contact owns a 2022 Lucid Air. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed in inclement weather, there was a lightning strike in close proximity, causing the vehicle to lose motive power. The vehicle inadvertently rebooted and the contact was able to park the vehicle next to a residential garage; however, after turning off the vehicle, the vehicle was unable to be restarted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that a battery pack had short-circuited and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the lightning strike was not related to the failure. The failure mileage was 243.

"Roadtrip with My Motorhead Nephew So last week my nephew and his wife came down to visit us in the Carolinas. Nephew Tom is a dyed-in-the-wool car fan and self-proclaimed motorhead. He's the kind of guy who can look at a classic car and tell you the make, model, and what year it came out, based on things like trim pieces and tail lights. Tom has a love of American muscle cars, but is also pretty clear eyed about their limitations. Tom was a fuel hauler back in the day and now teaches semi drivers how to do it safely. Tom has been EV curious ever since we told him we were expecting delivery of the Lucid Gravity in December. Well... last week Tom got a chance to ride in it for a few hours, get a full review of its features from yours truly, and test drive it in all three modes. He was, to put it mildly, blown away by the Lucid Gravity and how it manages to be a performance car, a luxury car, an economy car, a cargo hauling monster, and does it silently and efficiently. On our trip to Seagrove Tom took all of these pictures to share with some buddies back home. Efficiency 3.11 and about $9.32 to drive \~250 miles. Thanks to the Lucid Air Pure AWD owner who hung out in the p"

"Test Drove Hey everyone! I currently drive a 2020 Tesla Model 3 Long Range and was looking at some cars recently. Decided to go and test drive some cars. First test drive, 2024 Lexus RX 500H F Sport. Well, it was terrible lol. Handling, feel, speed, smoothness all were quite “mid” when compared to my older Model 3! The only thing it had for it was nicer materials / build quality and slightly more comfortable over bumps. Maybe ICE cars are just like that? Then, later that day I test drove a Lucid Air Grand Touring. Holy crap, now this is what I’m talking about! The comfort, speed, handling, interior, everything about the car was fantastic! Truly felt like an upgrade to my current model 3! People that drive EVs, are ICE cars just a bit dated in feel comparatively? Thanks!"

"1800 miles in 1.5 weeks - Lucid Gravity GT Just spent the last week or so doing a *ton* of driving in the Lucid Gravity GT (full options + medium tires) - a good mix of city/long distance driving. This will include details from a roadtrip from Las Vegas to Reno, NV. A separate section at the end will include the list of items I have prepared for our service center to address next week (issues with the car at delivery). My comparison vehicles for this car that I have owned/can benchmark against: Mercedes S class, G wagon, AMG GLE coupe, Mercedes EQS 580, Audi Q8, Porsche Macan GTS, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, and of course, Lucid Air Touring. **Good:** Porsche-like **suspension** handling. This means the car handles bumps without head toss/side to side bouncy motion. While this can make for \*slight\* firmness around town, it also inspires better driving dynamics. Very Porsche. By no means is it S-class plush, nor is it Tesla/Rivian stiff. We had to cross some deep floodwater on our way up, and the 9 inches of added ground clearance let us cross while all the other cars had to wait. That was cool. Porsche-like **steering/handling**. Very direct, well weighted steer"

"3.5.1 is amazing! From a Lucid Air to a Lucid Gravity, 3.5.1 was such a needed upgrade! Better native software stability and new features like CarPlay and Android Auto have been worth the wait, but now we need EV route charging added to them. Don’t forget to update your Lucid app and key fob as well! More detailed information on things like CarPlay limitations and accessories you can add as well coming soon."

"Frustrated - Want to Lemon Law the Car Hey guys. I guess this is more of a frustration vent and possible advice. I’ve had my 2025 Lucid Air Touring for 7 months. I just got back car from Service Center in GA yesterday. And issue it went in for didn’t get fixed. And now a new issue began today. This is the run down : 1) App wasn’t working, so couldn’t use it to set climate - mobile service came and couldn’t fix it. 2) Right passenger door handle would stay open and the actual door opened wide twice while driving (thank god kids weren’t in car) - mobile service came and fixed it. 3) Roof rack cover came off and requested an evaluation for app not working - took it in person to service center and they placed the cover and found wire of TCU faulty. Replaced it. And works better. 4) Couldn’t put car in to drive or reverse for 30-60 seconds and Roof rack cover disappeared again. - Took to service center. They fixed the cover. But said they couldn’t fix or find issue with the putting car in drive or reverse. Ultimately fixed with the software update 5) Trunk on opens an inch and then closes. Have to try multiple times (on app, center console, and trunk button itself). - Took to service center and they said they fixed it. Got car yesterday. And last night the trunk doesn’t open. Now Today as I was getting out of my garage, I got the “Reverse Light Fault - Contact Customer Care ”. Of course, it’s on a Sunday. Customer Care is closed. Called service center, no one is picking up. This will be my 6th service visit. I’m done with Lucid. Great ride but these iss"

"Serious Safety Failure on My Lucid Gravity (v3.3.9) – Driver Display Went Blank at Highway Speed I wanted to share a recent, severe safety incident involving my Lucid Gravity in case other owners have experienced anything similar — and to highlight the difference between how Customer Care and my local service center have handled it. A few days ago, while driving on the highway with my family, the entire driver panel on my Gravity went completely blank. No speedometer, no drive mode, no blinker audio or video, no indication of whether the vehicle was in Park, and all controls for lights, wipers, etc. disappeared from the interface. Essentially, the car left me driving blind with no indicators or feedback at 60+ mph, and there was nowhere safe to pull over immediately. Once I was eventually able to stop and put the vehicle into Park, the system came back — but the failure itself was extremely unsafe. I documented everything on video and reported it immediately. Here’s how things have gone since: **Service Center:** My local service center was good. They reached out, collected detailed information, and brought the car in for review. They provided a loaner (a Lucid Air, not a G"
