Is a low score bad?
Not always. A low score flags items to verify before buying — and often signals stronger value, since heavier discounts already price the risk in. See TrimIndex’s pre-purchase inspection →

Buyer brief · 218 words

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class G 580 with EQ Technology comes with 239 miles of EPA range, 200 kW fast charging and a 108 kWh battery, and a worth-pursuing score, but only after a hard inspection and a fair price.

Score read

A 65/100 makes this a records-first inspection. Build quality score is 85/100, but range and efficiency score is only 32/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: build quality and owner satisfaction. Next, prove battery condition, charging behavior, tires, and service history.

Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation

Gotchas

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (32/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 239-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 2 Confirm how much of the 10-year/155,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 3 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 4 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.
  • 5 Review title, service history, tire condition, and charging-equipment records before final price.

The Financing Room · What Actually Happens

Dealers make ~$30,775 on the average car loan.

After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.

01 · Without pre-approval
+$5,014
Rate markup

78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB

With pre-approval ↓
Rate is already locked

Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.

02 · Without pre-approval

"What's your monthly budget?"

Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg

Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.

GAP + extended warranty upsell

Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy

You can shop it or skip it

Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.

A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.

"I have 2 of these. You don’t really accidentally hit them, and they move pretty smoothly. What I would like is greater control of brightness through software, with no stops on the wheel. Screen too bright on my car and no way to lower the minimum. I’m sure MB can I just can’t."

"Humor me for a second on the GLS headlamp switch.... Hi all! Non-Mercedes owner here. Please forgive my intrusion. Full disclosure, I'm a components designer for a major auto manufacturer. We were benchmarking large SUVs including the GLS. By all accounts it was an extremely nice vehicle. The only thing that stood out as a negative to me was this switch. In particular the cabin dimming roller. In fact it was so bad, I created this post to find out if this was just a fluke. There were several issues. One was that the finish seemed like unpainted off-white plastic. Not painted like the rest of the switch. It also had no detents and felt insanely easy to move. This gave it a very cheap feel like a doodad on a toddler toy that doesn't do anything. So cheap that it felt like they had sent it to production before it was finished. It was really jarring. Obviously, I make my living designing things like this, so I'm really focused on details, and I'm assuming most "normal" people don't care. But the customers who spend this much on a vehicle are a little less normal and more likely to find things that don't match their expectations. So, G-Class owners, did I get a fluke? Obviously, the rest of the car is good enough to make up for this hiccup, but I was just curious if anyone had noticed this."
