The 2023 Nissan LEAF SV is rated at 214 hp, 212 miles of EPA range and a 56 kWh battery, and plan around the short range and check that home and route charging cover daily use.

Score read

A 59/100 makes this discount-only territory. The useful split is build quality score at 84/100 versus range and efficiency score at 21/100. Reddit threads cluster around software tech and owner satisfaction — verify both against the service records. If the seller cannot show recall completion, price that risk or move on.

Price context

Bring your own comps Pull current comps before negotiating

This trim started from $36,040 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (21/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

  • Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.

Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 212-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Campaign #23V048000

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2023 LEAF vehicles. The Owner's Manual instructions for defroster operation are incorrect, and may result in reduced defroster performance under specific conditions. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 103, "Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems."

Reduced defroster performance can limit visibility out of the windshield, increasing the risk of a crash.

Soon after I leased this Leaf, I noticed shifting interference. It grew steadily worse over the 3 or so months I kept the Leaf. Toward the end of that time period, it took a great deal of maneuvering of the shift knob to get into the correct direction. It would flip back from position before it engaged the forward or reverse motion. I got involved in a fender bender incident which was at least partially a result of the shifting confusion. At one point I put 3-in-1 oil into the top of the shifting pad. It helped for a very short time. Finally, I could not get the car to move either forward or back. I had the car towed to the dealer. The dealer said that foreign something had gotten into the shifting mechanism. I noted that the shifting mechanism in this car is located directly adjacent to a drink cup holder. So, apparently splash from my drink caused problem. If true, at the least, the shifting mechanism ought to be water proofed from outside fluid and particulate travels. An unsafe regular occurrence, I think.

Backed up slowly – then intersected with the rear bumper of a Honda – slowly I braked – then went into Drive mode to get out of the intersection. Then I lost control of the car. Car went lurching forward fast – zoomed up over parking curb – 5 in – side-swiped the side of a tree with right front bumper – gashed with parts flying all over the grass. Crashing noises from jumping the curb and hitting the tree. I braked hard and got vehicle to stop = approx. 3 feet from another tree – which I would have hit straight on. No airbags were deployed. It all happened at high acceleration in an instant. After I recovered from the shock, I assessed the situation. The dashboard showed a malfunction – right front tire – no air pressure. Contacted my insurance company – GEICO – and opened a claim. GEICO arranged for my vehicle to be towed by ASAP Towing to my home. Took photos of the wreckage – collected all the pieces I could in a bucket – some were too large to fit into my car = air dam or some sort of under side cover – made of gray bendable plastic. Called ASAP - the towing company – asked about a flat bed as my front right tire was flat and the front bumper of the car had fallen off. My Leaf needs to be repaired. It needs to be reprogrammed by Nissan so that I feel safe driving it. Of note, I had to my Nissan dealer – Mossy Nissan Poway – for the recall R23A6 on Sept. 26, 2023. I pulled into a parking spot and to make sure I stopped when I wanted to, I braked. The car accelerated, smashing into a building. I always drive in eco mode and generally use the e-pedal which was on at the time. I’m not sure if either or a combination of those may have been a factor in what happened. The car is available for inspection upon request. I was fine, but very shaken. The car is driveable, but the front bumper is mangled and the left blinker no longer works. The headlights are functional. The charger panel releases and I can pry it open, though it no longer pops up. No airbags were deployed. The car was going slow enough, there seems to be no damage to the building. I'm concerned what could happen when we drive into our garage or, worse, if there is a car or pedestrian in front of our car and rather than braking the car accelerates. I have seen several reports of similar experiences, though no resolutions or suggestions. I can imagine this being a one-time occurrence, but I am deeply concerned it is not. I've been at a loss in who and how this can be addressed. I have called several Nissan dealers. The service people that I spoke with were not optimistic about what they could discern and, more importantly, did not seem concerned. As a result, I called my long-time car mechanic who did some initial diagnostics, but they were inconclusive. There have been no other inspections. I have reported this to Nissan USA and have opened a case/claim. I don’t recall any warnings at the time. All recalls have been updated.

The Electoral System gives a red warning on the Dashboard Stating, " NO POWER SERVICE EV SYSTEM." The EV goes completely dead even with a charged battery it takes several times trying to restart the car aprox 20minutes to more then a hour until finally the car turns over. I believe this is safety risk as it strands its occupants in sometime dangerous or unknown locations or even in the middle of nowhere. It has put me at risk by similar situations. There has been several owners of this vehicle complaining about the same thing so I know im not the only owner that is having this trouble. The vehicle is going to the dealership tomorrow maybe they have answers but for how new this car is a 2023 Nissan leaf S with under 9,000 miles on it, is unacceptable. When the red box comes up there is NO Prior Warnings that the car will restart or will completely die when driving.

My front collision system will sporadically start flashing when there is nothing in front of me. One time a dealer was able to read a code saying that it overheated, and told me that was a known issue with no solution. It was 100F, but I have had the same issue at 35F. The dealership and corporate cannot tell me how the safety system will respond with this error, either disabling my crash prevention system or possibly automatically breaking for no reason. I have taken it to the dealership 4 times. One refused to even try to read the code as it was happening. Another read the code but refused to record it. The other times they kept the car for a total of 8 days and didn’t even look at the component. It seems like they know that this safety issue exists and have no plans to address it. They also refuse to answer my question about liability if it causes my car to automatically break and cause an accident. This has happened at speeds between 0 and 75 mph

This car was delivered with no plastic panel covering the area above the driver's feet. The steering column, insulation, wiring, diagnostic port, and structural elements are visible. The selling dealer's initial reaction was that there should be a panel there, but they had not noted it as missing in their inspection. Another, closer, dealer saw photos and agree to install the panel, but did not have the correct part, and told me that another similar car on their lot did not have this panel, so perhaps it was supposed to be missing. My assumption is that it is not safe for these things to be exposed, especially the steering column. I will attach a photo of the area.

The car (2023 Nissan Leaf SV Plus) was being driven down an urban street during daylight hours and in good weather (no precipitation). The car was being driven in the middle lane, between the right lane and the left turn lane, and at slow speed, as it had been stopped for a stop light. There was a truck parked in the right lane with a "cherry picker" on it that was involved in tree trimming. The truck was not moving. As the Nissan Leaf started to accelerate from the stoplight, the car suddenly applied it's brakes, rapidly slowing the car to a stop, and almost causing the car following to strike the Leaf from behind.

The problem does not occur often. It is not easily reproducible. The vehicle can be made available for inspection upon request. If the rear camera does not work, the car could back into objects or people. The problem is hard to reproduce. The windshield of my Nissan Leaf spontaneously cracked without being hit by anything externally. Upon inspection, it's pretty clear that the windshield didn't crack because of anything hitting it from the outside (which is what the dealer claimed), since the outside of the windshield is still completely smooth. The crack somehow started from the bottom of the inside of the windshield and propagated itself across the entire windshield. When the car was purchased, my dealer recommended warranty purchase because of the fragile windshield, which suggested that the windshield design may be faulty.

I am in possession of NHTSA Recall 22V-048 for my Nissan Leaf, received on 04/05/2023. This recall remedy is in my opinion clearly deficient. Although a owner's manual supplement is included, the supplement does not: (1) replace the current, defective owner's manual (2) provide any way to mark the current manual to indicate that there's a problem and to refer to the supplement or (3) Even identify what page the problematic instructions are on. Even if someone follows the recall notice to the letter (which is to place the supplement with the owner's manual), someone looking up the instructions in the owner's manual for defrosting will not know to refer to the supplement instead of the original manual. This recall needs to be re-done, either by sending an entirely new manual (instructing owners to discard the old one) or at the very least to identify the affected page and provide a sticker to cover up the incorrect information and tell people to refer to the supplement instead.

"Bought a 2023 Leaf S! Bought a 2023 Leaf S in DFW Metroplex area for USD 30.5 K (after a $500 new graduate rebate). Scanned every Nissan dealer in 250+ mile radius and landed on Grubbs Nissan. They had one that they were willing to negotiate. Saw a lot of bait and switch deals (looking at you - Clay Cooley) that frustrated/disappointed me. Before relocating to DFW, I had a 2017 Nissan Leaf S in Seattle - bought used for 11K in 2020 and sold it to Carvana (bless their aggressive, but costly market expansion approach) for 16K (10 bars) in Jul 2022. I waited for the crazy market to subside.. but took the plunge before the $7500 credit expires this Dec. Very happy with the new model; build quality is fantastic - the door closes with a thud! Looking forward to many years of fun and hassle-free ownership! One quick question - Unlike 2017, where ePedal was sorta enabled in B mode, in the 2023 model I have to explicitly enable it for every drive. Is there a menu/setting that makes it default? Thanks for reading!"

"Saving on gas with a Nissan Leaf I have been driving a Nissan Leaf (electric car) for daily commute and city driving for the past few months. The average miles/kWh is currently at 5 miles/kWh. At the current price of 17c/kWh, that is 88 miles for the price of $3. $3 is the current price for 1 gallon of gas in my area. That is pretty good and it is blowing my mind. "Just bought a 2021 Leaf from Carvana… normal range behavior or did I buy a problem? \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* Update Hi guys! Thank you so much for all the advice and insight about my 2021 Nissan Leaf. I really appreciated how helpful and knowledgeable this community was. After weighing everything (and with the active recall + charging concerns), I called Carvana and scheduled a return. The best part? I don’t even have to stress about driving it back. They’re picking it up from my house. Huge re-Leaf! I’m going to take some time to shop around and do a little more homework on recall history, battery info, and real-world owner experiences before jumping into another EV. Silver lining: I’ve learned *a lot* about EVs in the past few days and now know every public charging station in my town 😅 So not a total loss. Thanks again, r/leaf. Y’all are awesome. \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* Hey everyone. I’m hoping for some insight from experienced Leaf owners. I picked up a 2021 Nissan Leaf from Carvana on Saturday. It only has about 20k miles on it, so I felt pretty good about the purchase. Carvana passed it to me with a 20% charge. I live about 45 minutes away and had to take a 65mph highway home. Before leaving Carvana, I found an EVgo fast charger about half a mile away at a hotel. By the time I got there, the battery had already dropped from 20% to 10%. I downloaded the app, read the manual, and after a few tries got it charging. Sat there about an hour and a half and got it to 60%. Based on the estimated range, I thought I’d be fine to get home and charge in my garage. About 30 minutes into the highway drive, I looked down and it was already at 20%. That definitely got my attention. I pulled off and found another charger, brought it up to 40%, and figured I only had about 10 more minutes of highway before I’d be back in town. I drove the whole trip in Eco mode and used e-Pedal the entire time. I was a afraid to use the heater incase that would drain the battery further. I made it home at 12%. Then things got weirder. The included charger is a Nissan Zero Emission Model 296900. It doesn’t have a NEMA adapter, but my garage has a 240V 50A outlet that it physically plugs into. When I plug it in, though… nothing lights up. No indicators. The Leaf says it’s plugged in but it doesn’t charge. I checked the breakers. Same result. I’ve ordered a new charger, but it won’t arrive until Thursday. My brother-in-law gave me a multimeter and I’m planning to test the outlet after work to rule that out. Unfortunetly, I don't have another plug to test it on. My dryer's plug is an entirely different shape. In the meantime, I took it to a local charger and got it up to 80% yesterday. Yesterday I drove about 15 miles total around town running errands and it lost about 18% charge. What’s confusing me is that the battery health bars (the 12 capacity bars on the right side of the dash) show full all 12 bars. So ac"

"I've also just learned that EVGo has blacklisted the leaf which is major ammo. Here is an addition to the script to accommodate that: I also want to note that EVgo, one of the largest fast charging networks, is refusing to initiate fast charging sessions for Nissan Leafs because of this defect. This means Level 3 charging is unavailable not just because Nissan told me to stop using it, but because charging networks themselves are blocking my vehicle. That is a direct and substantial loss of use and value."

"- Called the dealer who had sold me the car- through it was a problem with me accepting the "terms and agreements" for the software. Was unable to do this step with dealer's help - Called EV&Services- 1-877-664-2738. I worked with them for about two weeks. To their credit, they worked with me for about an hour on two different days and called me back every other day. But no fix- I was finally able to accept the "terms and agreement" on the webpage- but no fix to the Nissan Connect or SOS button. Ultimately they left a message that they could not fix it and the dealership would have to fix. - Made an appointment with the Nissan Dealership. I took my vehicle in on July 25th for a drop-off 0900 appointment. The dealership called back on that afternoon to let me know that the Nissan Connect and SOS issue would be covered at not cost (duh!!!-it is a brand new car) I was traveling and had a bad connection during that call, so I called back on Tuesday to just confirm that I understood what was said. That is the last time I have talked with the service manager. - I called the dealership on Friday, July 29th to get an update. No return call. (I always go through the main service department operator, and they transfer me to his phone) - On Sunday, I drove by the dealership and looked in the window of my car. The dash is laying in the seat, so I concluded that the problem is not fixed. - I called again today at 0900. I still have not received a reply."
