The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV packs 200 hp, 259 miles of EPA range and a 65 kWh battery, and park-outside or do-not-drive risk hangs over the trim — verify the VIN before you negotiate.
Score read
A 59/100 makes this not a casual purchase. Software and driver-assist score is 84/100, but build quality score is only 34/100. Owners on Reddit repeatedly cite owner satisfaction and software tech as recurring problems. Treat missing repair records as a price problem, not a footnote.
Price context
Used examples are running around $14,151. Treat that as a budgeting floor, not a final price; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase or Edmunds True Market Value for this exact trim before negotiating.
Who this is for
✓ Good for
- ⏱ Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging
✗ Avoid if you are a
- ↦ Road tripper Long trips, needs DC fast network
- $ Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation
Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Verify Build quality is where the inspection earns its keep (34/100).
Mitigation Inspect alignment, cabin noise, suspension feel, tires, and trim wear more carefully than usual.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 259-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Drive rough pavement, check door and hatch alignment, and listen for trim noise before you negotiate.
VIN status first This model has 7 NHTSA recall records. The exact VIN lookup decides whether the car in front of you is clear.

Source & disclaimer
Dealers make ~$6,319 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 28 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

I was was traveling at 68 mph, then rear ended and pushed into the center divide. The entire front drivers tire + assembly was destroyed. The airbags didn't deploy. The cab did fill with a white 'smoke'. A little bit later I received a message from the Chevy app that there was a problem with my airbags and I should seek service. My insurance has deemed the car a total loss and picked up the car and taken it to their lot for inspection. I don't know the status of this and the incident has not been reported to the manufacturer/dealer.

About 1 month ago I picked up my daughter from school. Just as we exited the parking lot, there was nothing in front and the brakes came on and the car turned off and would not restart for a few minutes. The same day, we were on the way home I was traveling about 35mph. All of a sudden the brakes came on again. This time there was nothing in front but many cars behind, so I floored the accelerator the car tires screeched. I was less than a mile from home and made it without incident. The dealership is unable to reproduce or review the logs because the vehicle stopped logging everything since December 4th. The car is in my driveway and I don't trust it can safely be driven. The dealership is not helpful by telling me to just monitor the situation and bring it in if it happens again. I am seeing on the internet that there are many people experiencing this exact problem.

2022 Chevy Bolt, less than 10,000 miles. Problem began 11/24/23. Steering wheel locks up at low speeds, gives warning "Steering Assistance reduced" at higher speeds. At low speeds, steering wheel turns only a small amount before it clicks and stops. Very dangerous in tight parking lots or trying to turn left or right from a stop - takes multiple tries to get steering wheel to turn, and sometimes it jerks back in the opposite direction. Took it to dealer, they said steering column needs to be replaced. Did not have an accident or hit anything prior - I think the column is defective.

While waiting to make a left turn, the car lurched forward about a foot and went into park.It would not shift into any gear. A warning briefly showed up on drivers display which said DO NOT SHIFT UNTIL???? RESETS. I turned car off but it immediately came back on automatically, and for twenty minutes I was in the intersection blocking traffic (police called to protect me from traffic). On drivers display a car symbol with exclamation point through the car was showing. After twenty minutes I turned it off again and it stayed off until I turned it on. The display of car with exclamation point was still showing. I could then shift into another gear and drive home less than a mile. When I checked car later car with exclamation point display was gone. Everything seemed. I was driving in one pedal mode.

While braking I have had multiple cars almost crash into the rear of my vehicle due to the breaking system of the vehicle. The break lights are too low and people expect the “running lights” on the rear to indicate breaking. I have also had multiple people tell me my break lights are out due to this. This is a safety issue be the design of the breaking system, I have found multiple forums of owners who have been rear ended for this exact issue.

The Bolt EUV suddenly and unintentionally sped forward when being parked in our garage. My wife slammed on the brakes and stopped the vehicle before it could hit the garage wall. No damage occurred.

I was driving on the highway above 60 mph, and I suddenly got a "propulsion power reduced" alert, along with a yellow indicator light. I almost immediately thereafter got a message saying "speed reduced to 50 mph" and then "speed reduced to 30 mph." I got no acceleration when I depressed the accelerator pedal. In fact, it felt like the car had engaged the regenerative braking to actively slow me down. This is a life-threatening safety flaw, as it was difficult to get to the breakdown lane. The only reason there was no collision was that there was relatively light traffic. I managed to get to a breakdown lane and then, after restarting the car, to get off the highway and into a parking lot, where I called for a tow. The car was towed to the dealer I bought it from and, the next day, they inspected the car and determined that the auxiliary transmission fluid pump had failed and needed to be replaced. I've seen many reports on reddit that this part fails on chevy bolts. What makes this truly unsafe is that there was no warning whatsoever that something was wrong. Everything seemed fine (after I got a new battery under the big bolt battery recall) until the car suddenly cut power and slowed me down in the middle of the highway. This car needs to be recalled again.

I am filing this complaint regarding my 2022 Chevrolet Bolt, which has been awaiting battery replacement at McCluskey Chevrolet for over 30 days, creating significant safety concerns and violating federal warranty requirements. Safety Concerns: The vehicle's safety systems detected a battery defect serious enough to automatically restrict functionality. This demonstrates GM recognized an immediate safety risk. Despite this urgency, my vehicle remains inoperable after 30 days with no completion date provided. This delay indicates systemic failures in GM's remedy program for known battery defects. GM has known about this issue for years and has yet to source replacement batteries within a reasonable timeframe for drivers awaiting a replacement. Federal Law Violations: This situation violates the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which requires warranty repairs be completed within a reasonable time period. Thirty days for a safety-critical component replacement, particularly after the vehicle self-diagnosed a dangerous condition, exceeds any reasonable standard. Requested NHTSA Actions: Investigate GM's compliance with recall remedy requirements and parts availability Assess whether GM's battery replacement program meets federal safety standards Determine if GM is violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act through excessive repair delays Consider enforcement action to make sure timely remediation of safety defects Require GM to provide loaner vehicles during extended safety-related repairs Documentation Available: I request NHTSA's immediate intervention to address both the individual and systematic failures of GM in handling these repairs.

I was driving 72 mph, and went to accelerate to 75 mph to set my cruise control. As soon as I stepped on the accelerator pedal, my 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV jerked violently and immediately applied braking to car to take it from 72 mph to about 30 mph within 1 second. Had someone been behind me I would have been rear ended. I was able to pull over to the shoulder of the road, and put my car into park. I was unable to turn off the vehicle or shift into any gears (reverse, neutral, drive). The car displayed a warning on dash "power drive train malfunction pull over safely". There was no warning for the sudden deceleration and is a serious safety risk and concern.

Not necessarily a failure or malfunction. When making right/left turns vehicle will accelerate for apparently no reason. Each time entering a parking lot or making a standard right/left turn. Each time this has happened during this acceleration it has almost caused a vehicle crash with another car in front or in another incident almost hit pedestrian. Found that the Rocker switch for Cruise control is being hit accidentally causing Cruise control to become activated causing the vehicle to accelerate.

The system in question is the Super Cruise hands free driving system. There has been several instances where the system has swerved the vehicle without warning or reason. There have been several instances where the system has failed on mapped road. There have been several instances where the vehicle wouldn't drive in the center of the lane, but instead on the lines or too close to other vehicles. I have dash cam footage and cell phone footage of the system failing and can duplicate it without issue. The vehicle spent over 30 days at the dealer and they were unable to fix it. The message that will appear when the system intermittently won't activate is "super cruise unavailable" I have attempted to work with my dealer, GM, and Onstar and nothing has been done to take my safety seriously or to fix the issue.

The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 70 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently decelerated to 30 MPH with the transmission warning light and three other unknown warning lights illuminated. The failure nearly caused a collision. The vehicle was towed to the dealer; however, the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The dealer determined that the negative battery terminal cable was faulty and replaced the negative battery terminal cable. The failure recurred, and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 9,000.

Around 5 PM on 10/7/22 I was driving on Purcell Road in Manassas VA. The car has a 60% charge on it EV battery showing a range of around 170 miles. As I was driving I felt the Chevrolet Bolt stutter twice, as if it was loosing power. Then, when I stopped at the stop light at Purcell and Hoadly the car shifted into park and would not shift into any other gear, including neutral. Any attempts to shift would give an error warning "Conditions Not Correct for Shift" In addition to being unable to move the car out of the intersection, the car could not be shut down. Pressing the power button would make the screen flicker for a moment and then it would power itself back on with the same "Conditions Not Correct for Shift" error. Onstar was called about the problem and shortly after the police arrived to tow the car. The car was a traffic hazard since it could not be put into neutral to get it out of traffic. The car was taken to Lindsay Chevrolet Service Center (15605 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Woodbridge, VA 22191) for diagnostic and repairs. They have reported that the problem was a wiring harness.

I was driving the vehicle approx 35mph on a surface street when it suddenly lost propulsion. There was no warning. The display suddenly showed 0 rand and 0% high voltage battery SOC. I had to cross multiple lanes of rush hour traffic with no propulsion to coast to a stop. Once parked the vehicle would not go in gear and would not move. It was towed to a dealer where a blown manual service disconnect lever (high voltage battery fuse) was found to be blown. The dealer determined the root cause to be a faulty level 2 charging station I used earlier in the day. After contacting the charging station vender there was no fault found with the station and no other complaints filed with its operation. The fuse blew 6 miles after being charged, not while it was charging. I asked for the dealer to contact Chevrolet engineering and they declined. I contacted Chevrolet customer service and was not able to speak with anyone that is familiar with their EV products.

Vehicle will not charge passed 30%, receiving a reduced propulsion reduced message. Code P0BBD. Also No air conditioning. GM is holding the car till there's a fix and they have NO ETA and NO communication about an ETA. I'm irate and need my car back yesterday.

While pulling into a parking spot the car made a loud noise and came to a complete stop. Car was able to pull into the spot. When the car was turned on after parking a warning message came up to service transmission, unable to shift soon. Vehicle was driven to dealer for service and would make thud noises when decelerating at low speed.

As I drove my brand new 2022 Bolt (in use 30 days) into garage, the dash check engine light came on with a notice "reduced power propulsion." The battery was at about 50%. I tried to charge it and the dash indicated "charge complete." The reduced power propulsion message is concerningly similar to the error from the previous Bolt recalls that have resulted in fires. I took the car to my dealer and they have had it for 40 days and counting and say they don't know when it will be fixed nor do they know yet how to fix it.

My backup camera and surround cameras are not working. I’m getting a triangle icon and camera icon with a line through it. It first appeared when I was backing out of my driveaway then the camera worked again briefly. Now the camera is not turning on at all.

General Motors is making brand new Bolt ev/Euvs using batteries that are supposed to be used to fix cars that could potential catch fire. They stated that the old vehicles effected by the recall would be given priority. I have had a bolt EUV on reserve that has been waiting on a battery replacement for over a year. GM will not inform me or the dealership of when it might be repaired. Concurrently GM is making and selling new bolts that use the battery pack that could be used to fix the old bolts. It is criminal that they would allow dangerous vehicles to remain in public while they make brand new vehicles for profit using the part that could fix every single old vehicle. Based on GMs public response to the matter they are false advertising their response to “prioritize cars” that are already made that are faulty. Instead they are prioritizing new cars while leaving thousands of hazardous cars in dealer lots and on the street. If GM can make new batteries for new bolts and sell them then they can take care of the recall. I have had extensive conversations with several dealerships confirming that GM is shipping them new bolts while allowing defective bolts to sit for over a year. I have had conversations with GMs concierge desk where they confirm the same behavior. These actions by GM are fraudulent, dishonest, and a danger to the public.

I purchased this vehicle new in August of 2021. Two weeks after purchase, the vehicle's battery was placed on the recall list. I have had a software update installed on my vehicle, which limits my charging capacity to 80% of my capacity. I can't get any information from GM as to when my battery will be replaced or when I will be able to charge my car to 100% for trips. It's been 7 months and I am have not been able to use my vehicle's full range since I have had it.

GM issued a recall for fires on 20 August 2021. I immediately called to have the vehicle returned via their team and was given case SR:9-6888176701. GM has ignored five emails for update and many many phone calls have gone unanswered from my representative. Calls to the generic line have stated I would be contacted within 48 hours twice with no call or email. GM now says you cannot park within 50 feet of cars, your home or be inside your garage or even use the battery fully without risk of fire that would burn down the car and possibly your home or the cars around it. GM Needs to buyback all the bolt vehicles on the road

I am hoping to get a full refund on my car. When I bought it, I was never warned of the fire dangers. I park it in a carport and there is no other area where I park it. I worry every night because I can’t park far from other cars. Also, the carplay constantly freezes and the maps show completely different areas

What Owners Are Saying
"#1· Jan 12, 2023 Consumer Reports ranking for the most reliable cars of 2023 are in. Here are the winners. I suppose I am not surprised, given the battery debacles. But what surprised me is that they rank the 2023 Mini Cooper as the 3rd most reliable car! Has the reliability of the Mini gone up that much in the past few years? I once considered getting one, but their reliability, or lack thereof, drove me away (pun intended). #2· Jan 12, 2023 The Bolt is the most reliable vehicle of the dozens we've owned over the past sixty years. Zero problems, zero maintenance cost, zero dealer visits for five years. Then a new battery and a new warranty, so perfect support network; what could possibly be better? Fruck CR and the horse they rode in on!"
"Of course, I'm the type of guy who carries a spare tire, a Li-Ion jump pack, a 10mm wrench, etc. etc.. For someone who relies on AAA for the slightest problem, I can understand how frustrating it might be to not be able to get the charger plug into the port. #14· Jan 13, 2023 Never even give CR a glance on their ratings. They are literally a publication I never consider EVER when shopping for anything. Had a Chevy Volt it was a perfect car (still is and has the original 12V battery). Bolt is the best car I've ever had - absolutely no problems! Drove it away from Donohoo Chevrolet and it has never been back - guess I need to open the hood to check on the washer fluid. #15· Jan 15, 2023"

I have had my Bolt EUV with super cruise just over 3 weeks now, traded my 2018 Volt. #18· Sep 4, 2022 Battery update. Not sure if the battery is being conditioned in, it's definitely not us being hypermilers. We use the remote start often for the AC in the hot South, it's bee triple digits temperatures here. And my wife is not a conservative driver. The mileage on a full charge now shows. 280 plus, best of over 300. - 20220904\_081049.jpg"
"Temps in the low 80's with a route mix of urban streets, rural highway, and some interstate, got me thinking it might be a bit tight for the real world range some people are experiencing, especially with some of the route being at higher speed limit roads. One thing I've noticed is the range penalty for driving at higher speeds, (say 75 mph +), is massive. While I realize this is nothing new to most of you, it's an eye opener for someone like me who just took the EV plunge this summer. I decided to really focus on driving efficiently and keeping speeds closer to 60 rather than 75-80 as is common on some of the route. Well, it turns out if you have good situational awareness of momentum, use conservative throttle inputs, and keep your speeds reasonable, you can easily match the EPA range. We drove 162 miles and returned home with 98 miles of range showing on the GOM. Essentially, we exactly matched the EPA range on a real world trip while going with the flow of traffic and not doing any extreme hypermiling nonsense. #1· Oct 1, 2023\\ \\ \\ (Edited) So, after five months of ownership and mostly metro commuting, we finally decided to tackle a day trip of 162 miles this weekend."

A certain number of these vehicles were built with high voltage batteries produced at LG Chem’s Ochang, Korea facility that may pose a risk of fire when charged to full, or very close to full, capacity. GM previously recalled these vehicles for this condition. Through additional investigation, experts from GM and LG have now identified the root cause, and GM is commencing a new recall to replace defective battery modules in the recall population. **FMVSS 1:** NR **FMVSS 2:** NR **Description of the Safety Risk:** If the batteries in certain vehicles within this population are charged to full capacity, or very close to full capacity, the batteries may pose a risk of fire. **Description of the Cause:** The root cause is the simultaneous presence of two rare manufacturing defects in the same battery cell in design level N2.1 batteries produced at LG Chem’s Ochang, Korea facility. The condition appears to be aggravated by routinely charging the battery to a full or nearly full state of charge after it has been substantially depleted. **Identification of Any Warning that can Occur:** The battery may emit smoke"
"And for the Bold battery problem, for a very long time GM did nothing and told people to park outside and only charge a certain %. That's highly impractical for people that have a charger inside the garage (probably most EV owners), and don't want their vehicle being stolen, and want to have the promised range. So an owner obviously should ding them for that. My employer has very many Bolt. My office has an underground garage with chargers. For the time till they replaced batteries (which was many months), our Fleet Service had to relocate the Bolt to locations with outdoor chargers and gave us gasoline cars. This is highly impractical for most people. And no, GM didn't provide functional cars for that time. #18· Jan 18, 2023 I'm taking mine in for a lithium ion problem tomorrow post battery replacement.
