Buyer brief · 252 words

The 2024 Rivian R1T Dual Max (22in) puts down 665 hp, 380 miles of EPA range and a 172 kWh battery, and a worth-pursuing score, but only after a hard inspection and a fair price.

Score read

A 71/100 makes this a records-first inspection. The useful split is software and driver-assist score at 85/100 versus range and efficiency score at 57/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: owner satisfaction and software tech. If the seller cannot show recall completion, price that risk or move on.

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (57/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 380-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

While traveling at highway speed on Interstate 95, the vehicle experienced a complete and sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle would not respond to the Vehicle Restart function. The driver was able to safely pull to the shoulder from the right lane. The vehicle was towed to a Rivian service center, where technicians identified a low-voltage event matching a known Rivian engineering investigation. Rivian confirmed no current repair exists and that engineering is actively working on software improvements. The vehicle was returned unrepaired after 13 days. Rivian also replaced the 12V battery under warranty at a prior service visit in July 2025 for a related electrical system defect. Two field service actions (FSAM-1507, FSAM-1794) have also been performed on this vehicle.

I believed my car had a problem with the seals of the windows allowing severe wind noise. After attempted repair the problem persisted and, on closer inspection, it became evident that the driver side door is mis-installed and crooked. Rivian attempted to reprair this and only made it worse. The amount of wind/road noise that is coming in now is as if the windows was open. The door frame vibrates and whistles at speed. The mobile tech doesn't feel this is repairable but Rivian won't take responsibility for it. They have denied my BBB claim and I am pursuing a lemon lawyer.

Rivian alerted me that there was a “service action” related to the hub, and while waiting for that appointment, the hub came loose while driving and began grinding against the brakes and went into full system shutdown. The truck needed to be towed and the hub and brakes needed to be replaced. The truck was undrivae while driving at highway speeds and could have crashed. When questioned, the service center reiterated that this was “not a recall” but simply a head up. The repairs were covered under warranty.

"Another Owner review... I know these get redundant but feel like I have a bit of a unique perspective bc I've owned wayyy to many other cars and can compare. To start here is list of cars I've owned (in order) 1996 Volvo S60 2000 Saturn Ion 1999 Ford Explorer 2004 Chevy Cobalt 2004 Toyota 4Runner 2014 BMW 3 series 2015 Prius 2016 3 series 2018 4Runner 2019 5 series 2019 Ram 1500 2017 Tacoma 2018 Audi RS3 2018 Tesla Model X 2018 BMW M2 2021 Chevy Tahoe 2021 Land Rover Defender 2021 F150 Lariat 2022 F150 Lightning 2022 Porsche Taycan 2020 Mercedes GLS 2022 Tesla M3 2023 Rivian R1T To start here is my ranking of best vehicles I've owned in order 5. M3 4. F-150 Lariat 3. GLS 2. Model X 1. R1T Experience with R1T: I have owned the R1T for a few weeks now, have already had a few issues so I don't think I'm being idealistic, but this is hands down the best overall vehicle I have ever had. Size: The size is perfect. I am not a contractor so while I have always loved having a truck the full size was just too much to navigate in city setting and midsize was always a little cramped inside and no luxuries on midsize. Ride quality: The ride quality of the R1T is impressive and I'm surprised at some of the reviews I have read. The GLS is probably the most comfortable riding car I've owned, but the R1T is easily second. M2 most fun car to drive but can't really compare that to a truck. For the size tires (20in AT) it handles everything well and has great on road manors. Storage/Interior: The convenience of the storage options is huge and interior packaging is top of the line. Overall quality is leaps and bounds above Tesla and really does feel luxury. It's by no means BMW/Merc level but it's really nice. Tech: This is another area I am surprised people complain about so much, especially knowing it will only get better. I think it's way better than Sync and only pales to Tesla. I have had CarPlay on so many cars but honestly think the best overall experience is Tesla which does not have it. So I (in minority) am glad Rivian is focusing on their UI and not letting CarPlay take over. I also LOVE the screen sizes and layout. The thing I hated most about the lighting was the screen. It looks ridiculous, I much preferred the 12in horizontal screen in the Lariat. Speakers: probably the best standard system I have encountered. I do have the meridian system so can't speak to in house. Overall value: I don't know how you beat it. I think under $120k it holds up against anything. Why I'm excited about the future for Rivian: with everything I love there are so many places they can improve the vehicle. And that's a good thing bc I think it allows them to make small changes and stay competitive in the market. Little conveniences could help push the upper price (soft close doors, audio upgrades, interior choices, photochromic roof, continued UI upgrades) I also think they have a really great chance to corner a unique sedan market. "Thank you for the honest assessment of your experience and observations (not sure why everyone is focusing on the 2.9 so hard...). But i would agree with your conclusion. While my R1T isnt perfect, I’m SO happy with the overall vehicle, features and ownership over the last 3 years. I came from ICE to this as my first EV, and i dont see a reason to go back. Are EV’s for everyone? NO… not at this time, but for those that can charge at home, and adjust their way of thinking of fueling their vehicles and traveling for road trips, its beyond awesome. With that said, when I’m ready to upgrade or try something different, we will see what the market has to offer, and I will weigh the pros and cons for my use case and get what works best for me. "Thought I'd put down some pros and cons of EVs in general, and my R1T in particular for whatever help or insight it might provide to those considering making the plunge. Please feel free to add or correct, or ask questions and I'll try to answer based on my limited perspective. So, perhaps the biggest remaining concerns folks have about EVs in general are: Range, charging, cost, batteries, and practicality. Unless you are driving hundreds of miles a day in steep terrain, in cold weather, or towing across the country, range isn't really a concern anymore. My 2026 R1T dual motor max pack has a rated range of 420 miles when fully charged. That range will vary somewhat depending on your driving stye, steep hills, cold weather, how much you use the HVAC, high winds, if you're towing, and so on. It will vary to a greater degree than mileage/range on an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles, but not so much greater. In practice, it has never been an issue for me in real life; I have yet needed to charge anywhere but at home."

"Real World Roadtrip Range: Audi E-Tron vs. Rivian R1T TAKEAWAY: * Can't decide between a Large vs. Max pack? **Get a large.** * Standard+ vs. Large? Unless you're driving to remote locations often, the **standard+** is good enough, especially once NACS opens for more peace of mind. * Only get a Max if you tow far and often. Nerd post: I'm the owner of an R1T (Quad Large 20") and a 2019 Audi E-Tron Prestige. I often visit family in Springfield, OR from Auburn, WA (south Seattle). This trip is 266 miles one way, requiring a charging stop for both vehicles. The max highway range for the Audi is about 190 miles. In the Rivian it's 250 to 270 miles depending on wind/weather (20" wheels on the Rivian). Due to the excellent charging curve of the Audi, its roadtrip capabilities are actually pretty great for a vehicle with such low max range. The Rivian however, has a more traditional charging curve. Because the I-5 corridor has very reliable and plentiful stations, I have no concern over charging stations being down. **The question is: which vehicle is best to drive for this roadtrip? Do I go with more range in the Rivian, or drive the Audi instead?** So I did some math charing at L3 stations (150 kWh+): * In 25 minutes I gain: * 140 miles in the Audi * 135 miles in the Rivian * In 35 minutes I gain: * 172 miles in the Audi * 176 miles in the Rivian * For a 90% battery charge (5-95%) it takes: * 45 minutes in the Audi (4.44 miles per minute) * 85 minutes in the Rivian (3.05 miles per minute) That was surprising to me. The numbers above are optimal for the Rivian when using a 350kWh capable station. A 150 kWh would add \~10 minutes total. ABRP says this 267 mile trip (current traffic and weather conditions) would take: * 4 hr 40 min in the Audi incl. a 29 minute charge * 4 hr 30 min in the Rivian incl. a 19 min charge * Both vehicles start at 100% and arrive at destination with 10% remaining. **My point of this is: I think most of us feel like we need a minimum of 300 real world miles in our EVs. While I generally agree with this, it's kind of rare to actually need that many miles for 99% of driving.** Even when on a roadtrip, it doesn't really matter, as long as you drive a vehicle that charges well (I'm looking at you terrible Chevy Bolt) Another example is planning a roadtrip from Seattle to San Francisco. Let's assume you'll only use L3 stations along the way (CCS only, no NACS, no L2 stations overnight) 814 miles one way. It would take: * 15 hr 9 min in the Audi (incl. 2 hr 35 min of charging, 7 charges) * 15 hr 18 min in the Rivian R1T Large Quad (incl 3 hr 16 min of charging, 5 charges) * 14 hr 51 min in the Rivian R1T Standard Dual (incl 2 hr 33 min of charging, 5 charges) Don't stress about range too much. Purchase a vehicle because you like the drive, features, quality, etc."

"Well this isn't a good feeling after owning the truck for 1 week to have all my sensors, cameras, LiDaR, air suspension, crash avoidance, traction control, ABS, stuck in conserve mode, etc for the second time. It's sketch while on snow and the suspension suddenly stops working and sinks to the bump stops ?. Basically the truck is in analog mode and all the safety systems are offline. Hard reboot and console reboot doesn't work. Letting the truck go into sleep fixed it once. It didn't have these issues until the latest firmware update 2024.43.01. How did this OTA get approved for production? Did they not do pre-production functional testing first? Maybe I should work for Rivian, I use to do firmware functional testing for hardware devices ? "If I’m being honest Few things, as I honestly regret trading in my Tesla for the Rivian R1T for the following reasons: - Autopilot/FSD: Rivian highway assist + doesn’t work as great and is limited to highways only. Which I find a decent amount of roads not able to start highway assist - Service: I’ve had to take in for the same issue and each time they make me wait 3+ months due it not being a “safety concern”. Frustrating cause it’s the same issue I’ve taken it in for 2x times already (along with 4 other things). To top it off, my tweeter blew so I’ve been driving for 3 months with even worse audio quality. (I have messaged numerous times about getting bumped up but to no avail.) - Auto Heated Seats/Wheel: Honestly it’s a small thing but makes a huge difference. Miss not having to think about it. - Customer Service: I’m still waiting on my adapter, but am penalized for not buying after they decided to prioritize new deliveries. As they take a while to get back to you, just put in an order and try to reach out the guide Gretchen after the first couple of days (they barely respond). - Charging Efficiency: Not as well optimized as a Tesla, it’s just not as worked out as a Tesla. Also bigger battery capacity = longer charging. - Rattles/Noise (NVH): Lots of door, speaker, and suspension rattles - Software Updates: Not as flushed out as Tesla and takes like 3x longer to update. (Not a big deal, just don’t start it if you’re in a hurry) I expected some of these issues going into it (with Rivian being a new company), but debating whether I should have took the risk. Please Rivian people don’t hate me for being honest. I’m trying to be unbiased and I’m not saying anything that other car reviewers have said before. Especially for a $80k truck, Rivian should prioritize their existing customer versus doing the bare minimum. It’s a good truck but the Rivian service and quality let it down. Just be warned and maybe Rivian can help me get bumped up in service and get adapter! Wanted to give an honest review and maybe could help someone on the fence know what they’re getting into! Note: Posted this in another thread."
