The 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning 4WD puts down 580 hp, 240 miles of EPA range and a 125 kWh battery, and a worth-pursuing score, but only after a hard inspection and a fair price.
Score read
A 61/100 makes this a high-risk buy. The useful split is software and driver-assist score at 80/100 versus range and efficiency score at 35/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: software tech and range. If the seller cannot show recall completion, price that risk or move on.
Price context
Used examples are running around $50,697. Treat that as a budgeting floor, not a final price; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase or Edmunds True Market Value for this exact trim before negotiating.
Who this is for
✓ Good for
- ⏱ Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging
✗ Avoid if you are a
- ↦ Road tripper Long trips, needs DC fast network
- $ Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation
Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (35/100).
Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 240-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Dealers make ~$12,804 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 17 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

I was making a road trip in my 2024 F150 Lightning Lariat. I pulled up to a Tesla supercharger. I turned the car off and attempted to plug in but the cable was about three inches too short. So I got back in the truck, turned it back on and put it in gear for the last three inches of travel. The truck accelerated dramatically. It clipped two charging stations, hopped a curb and went into a field, headed for a major lane of traffic. I rode the brake as hard as I could and it continued to accelerate. I threw it in neutral and finally got control of it, just short of the road. I turned the vehicle off and back on and drove out of the field, the truck behaving normally. I finished the trip and returned home without incident. In reviewing the experience in my mind, I can't make mistaking the accelerator for the brake pedal make sense. You can't turn the vehicle on without pressing the brake pedal. You can't put it in gear without pressing the break pedal. And the fact that it continued to accelerate after hitting the charger doesn't sound like a pedal mistake. I have never found the human factors of the F150 to be challenging - it is very straight forward to drive. I also don't think I could have accidentally hit the cruise control. You can't accidentally engage the cruise control from a standing stop. I do always use one-pedal driving.

Hi There, i wanted to report a situation with my Ford F150 Lightning I brought this monster truck last December'24 and everything worked until today when i hit a issue with the break Me and my wife went to Costco for weekend Shopping, i was trying to park to a very comfortable parking position; after getting in, I reversed the car to make it align with the parking line. Right after that i changed the position to drive slowly role it forward to adjust my parking, the truck started accelerating forward. I pressed the break hard and hard it would not stop. Imagine its Costco, lot of people around me, luckily it was trees and mulch area Infront, and Imagine its Costco, lot of people around me, luckily it was trees and mulch area Infront, and there was a traffic board. The Truck hit the traffic pole and stopped hanging over the mulch area. Everyone around me was screaming and looking at me. Through traffic stopped and took diversion, i pulled back slowly, guess what, the car would not come back to the parking lot again. I press the reverse and accelerate to get back to the parking space, but car is still going forward, scary. I stopped the engine and again tried to reverse; it worked. I swear to God that i never hit the acceleration since it's a parking spot, why would i do that... Car still went forward, so it's a genuine bug in the Ford 150 which needs to be fixed, otherwise its going to hurt or kill people I still have loan to pay for this car, but after todays incident i will not take his car out again, Unless Ford give me proper explanation and fixes. I read many similar stories in Rediit, so i think this is real issue. Other wise why the car wont stop even i press th break pedal, remember i configure this car with one pedal, but still nothing worked. Any help in sorting this out is higly appreciated, i am more worried about the risk of the public's life with this kind of issues where i cannot stop the car even after pressing the break, its really scary

I was on the on-ramp and accelerated to get to freeway speed nothing crazy. The truck took off even with my foot off the pedal. I braked hard to avoid rear ending the vehicle in front.. Started slowing down took my foot off the brake and it did it again... braked hard again, hit the hard shoulder then it went back to normal. Lucky it was a 5 lane freeway...

Ford issued a recall for Ford Lightnings produced from November 2023 to February 2024, for the front ball joint nut falling off. Causing a loss of control, suspension and all steering input, later crashing. New truck with 700 miles. Fords guesstimate of 12000 trucks, going by the month math is more likely than not well over 24000 affected vehicles. MY TRUCK WAS MANUFACTURED JUNE 2024. My husband MOVED/unscrewed the aforementioned nut, off the left upper ball joint WITH THE FINGERS ON HIS HAND. The nut was loose. The upper ball joint appeared hand tight. FORD NEARLY KILLED US. I advised william at NHTSA and he hung the phone up on me. William needs to be terminated. William is apparently biased against gay men and/or retired law enforcement officers.

The vehicle has been in the shop two times due to rodents eating the wiring. Wiring insulation is derived from a plant (soy) based oil, which rodents eat. The truck could have had wiring eaten in any number of areas leading to loss of control.

Folding shifter issues with many F150s. Gets stuck in park or drive. Seems to be a rampant issue. Stuck in park is one thing, stuck in drive is extremely dangerous... Also causes service lights.

Gear Shifter stuck in D with amber light blinking constantly. At the same time, the Amber Wrench symbol appeared on the dash, with "Service vehicle soon" warning message. This indicates a Powertrain malfunction/Reduced Power issue. Vehicle towed to nearest Ford dealer (Scenic Ford, Mount Airy, NC) with about 225 miles on odometer. I purchased this new '24 Lightning Lariat [XXX] online, and picked it up at Sheehy Ford in Gaithersburg, MD [XXX], with 47 miles on odometer. The above issues occurred [XXX] as I was driving the vehicle home from Maryland to my home in Georgia. These problems occurred the same day I drove the new vehicle off the dealer lot. Additionally, the Gear Shifter has never folded down as its meant to fold down, enabling a flat work surface between the two front seats. This situation was present at Sheehy Ford when I picked it up brand new on [XXX]. I have an appointment at my local dealer, Akins Ford, Winder, GA, May 14, 2025 at 10am to have these issues assessed. My vehicle has a broken backup camera (extremely blurry, barely or unusable). It has not functioned properly since the vehicle had about 2,500 miles on it, around 15 December 2024. It now has 7,300 miles on it and the manufacture has not remedied the situation. The backup camera is currently on back order (since January 2025) by the dealership. The dealership implied that it was likely on backorder because there was a high demand for them since they were breaking frequently.

I was involved in a rear-end collision caused by a vehicle abruptly moving into my lane while traveling at a slower speed. From the time the vehicle entered my lane to the time of the collision was approximately one second. Despite this timeframe, the anti-collision warning system and automatic emergency braking (AEB) functionality in my Ford vehicle did not activate or alert me before the impact. Additionally, I have observed that the adaptive cruise control and Blue Cruise systems in my vehicle do not react until a vehicle in front is fully out of the lane (for acceleration) or fully in the lane (for deceleration). This delayed reaction may have contributed to the system’s failure to engage in this incident. I believe this represents a potentially unsafe functionality in the collision avoidance system, as it may not adequately respond to rapidly changing traffic conditions. I am reporting this to make sure it is investigated to help improve the safety of these systems and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The vehicle moved forward with the shifter set in reverse. My safety and the safety of others was put at risk because the vehicle moved in the opposite direction from that indicated both by the position of the shifter and by the audible backup warning. Pressing the accelerator caused the vehicle to move forward instead of reverse. This problem has not yet been reported to manufacturer. There were no warning lamps or messages. All indicators were normal. This occurred while parallel parking in a tight space between two cars on the left side of the road. I backed in as far as I could go to the car behind, then turned the wheel and pulled in close to the car in front. I repeated the back and forth two more times to align the vehicle with the curb. At this point the shifter was in drive position and vehicle was close to the car in front. I shifted to reverse and gently pressed the accelerator to move away from the car in front. Instead, the vehicle moved forward and bumped the car in front. I applied the brake, shifted to park, then shifted to reverse. Again, the vehicle moved forward and bumped the car in front. I applied the brake and shifted into drive, then into reverse. Again the vehicle moved forward. The audible backup warning could be heard whenever the shifter was in reverse, and it stopped when taken out of reverse. At this point I turned off the vehicle. I started it again about a minute later. At this point it shifted correctly. I shifted to reverse and the vehicle moved backward as expected. I was able to finish parking as usual.

What Owners Are Saying
"We own both. The Model Y wipes the floor with the truck in road tripping speed, although both are very easy to use on the Supercharger network. The truck is a lot more utility for around town driving. IMO the Lightning rides better and is built better. Both will most likely be reliable in my experience and I don’t think you can go wrong with either vehicle especially if you only plan to keep it for a few years."
"The 20" Lariat wheels are probably the worst wheels on the Lightning They only look OK on a very select / few color combos, most of the time they're just "meh". Surprisingly the 18" looks better most of the time and the 22"s, while boring, they're still OK. I opted for the 22" Ford Performance wheels and while "performance" is a joke (these things are 80lbs a piece ) they do look good (imho) on an AMB truck."
"What do you all think keep the 20s or downsize? 😄 Happy Friday, fellow Lightning owners! ⚡🚀 I just picked up my new Ford F-150 Lightning (super excited first EV truck for me!), and it’s awesome overall. But I’m not loving how the stock 20-inch OEM rims look on it. They feel a bit too flashy or something? Not sure if it’s just me, but I’m second-guessing the vibe. (Above pictures are 20-inch Rims) So I’m looking for some real-world advice from you all: 1. Should I stick with the 20” wheels, or switch down to 18-inch rims? I’ve heard 18s can give a smoother ride thanks to the taller sidewall (less harsh over bumps/potholes), and maybe even a little bump in range/efficiency since they’re often lighter with less rolling resistance. Anyone made the swap and noticed a big difference in ride quality or miles per kWh? (Especially curious about highway driving or daily commuting.) 2. On the practical side I do go for new rims, do tire shops (like Discount Tire, Les Schwab, etc.) usually buy/trade in your old Ford OEM rims? Or give some credit toward new ones? I’ve seen some places do take-offs or trade-ins for decent value, but others treat them as “used” right away and don’t offer much. Any tips on where to get the best deal or how to sell them privately? Totally new to the truck mod world (coming from sedans mostly), so all suggestions, pics of your setups, pros/cons, or even rim/tire combo recommendations are super welcome. Loving this community already—thanks in advance! Go Lightning!! ⚡💙"
"#33· Feb 11, 2025 Yeah, cold weather really takes a toll on range. I expected it before owning too, but experiencing it firsthand is definitely eye-opening. Preconditioning, parking indoors, and keeping speeds moderate help, but there’s still a noticeable drop. That said, in good conditions, it’s nice to see range actually exceed the rated 2.3. In the end, it all balances out. - Arial - Book Antiqua - Courier New - Georgia - Tahoma - Times New Roman - Trebuchet MS - Verdana Post Reply F-150 Lightning General Discussions Forum EFX4 May 10, 2022 Official Ford F-150 Lightning EPA Range And Efficiency Numbers"

There’s a few people who have had their doors misaligned differently on every one of their four doors and even a blind person would be able to send the truck back after a QC check. It’s just pathetic that they are getting away with it because people are letting them. Ford isn’t alone either; Toyota has been sending out Tacomas with rear bumpers that are over an inch out of alignment from the factory and they already look like they’ve been rear ended brand new. Look at a 1990’s Chevy W/T trim truck; the doors are aligned properly, a 1st gen Tundra will have properly aligned doors even Ford’s own trucks from the steel body era will have properly aligned doors. Even the gen13 trucks had better alignment."
"The other terrible ‘detail’ of the gen 14 trucks is the awful fit of the windshield cowl and its rubber trim piece. On my truck; it looks like some counterfeit shit from Wish.com but it’s been all bent and has gaps that you can stick a finger in since day 1 of ownership. Even the Ford escape has better fit/finish. It’s just pathetic how the shill automotive journalists just totally ignore such amateur hour shit from Ford, especially at the prices that they’ve been charging. My 2021 regular cab had an MSRP of $49,900 and the doors on my truck had to be realigned by a body shop to look like they were closed when the doors were shut. It also made a big difference in road/wind noise because as they were from the factory; I was effectively driving around with the doors cracked open. This isn’t a regular cab/crew cab thing; it’s an overall apathy from buyers that’s enabling manufacturers’ avarice by letting them ship out shit quality trucks. There’s a reason why there’s billions of dollars in recalls and warranty work on new vehicles. Chasing unreasonable EPA standards and infotainment nonsense is only half the problem. There is nothing wrong with the truck. Its all comes down to the Ford OTA process being one step shy of a dumpster fire. Nothing to do but enjoy the truck. Its not easy to be patient, I get it. #### Whammy Bar JoinedMay 30, 2022Threads29Messages810Reaction score1,351LocationSoCalVehicles 2022Lariat ER ed Reliable-1971 F100 2019 Tesla 3 LR"

Don't hold your breathe waiting for a response. Message me the VIN and I can give you some insight into how behind you are and if there are any connectivity issues with your truck. However, as was stated before, Ford's OTA process is unpredictable and unreliable and going months without updates is not out of the norm."
