Buyer brief · 252 words

The 2021 MINI Cooper SE Hardtop 2 door puts down 110 miles of EPA range, 50 kW fast charging and a 29 kWh battery, and plan around the short range and check that home and route charging cover daily use.

Score read

A 60/100 makes this discount-only territory. Do not let the composite hide this split: software and driver-assist score is 96/100, while range and efficiency score is 24/100. Reddit threads cluster around software tech and owner satisfaction — verify both against the service records. Documented completion matters more than the recall count itself.

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (24/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 110-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

The Financing Room · What Actually Happens

Dealers make ~$7,559 on the average car loan.

On October 4, 2022, the Mini Cooper hardtop 4 door was hit in a head-on collision by a driver who was going at least 40 MPH, possibly more. The car that hit the Cooper was a Toyota Prius. All the Prious' airbags deployed. No airbags deployed on the Mini Cooper hardtop 4 door. None. The Mini Cooper, after assessment, was considered to be a total loss.

The car completely lost steering in traffic. I brought it back to the Mini dealership, they informed me this is a known issue for Mini Coopers equipped with the click-and-play system, and they needed to re-wire the click-and-play to fix it. However Mini decided this should not be a recall. I strongly disagree with Mini's assessment considering losing steering on the road could cause severe accidents.

No incident occurred. On October 18th we received a high voltage battery recall notice for this car. Apparently there were some thermal events (fires) and BMW has released software to help protect the car from such an event. We have been trying to get in touch with MINI, and just recently found that the dealer closed. They left their answering machine online for about a month after. The local BMW dealer says that they cannot perform the update (MINI USA requested we ask them). MINI USA now says that the car must be trucked 300 miles away to the closest dealer. The car cannot even be driven that far because it has about 100 miles of range, the roads are 75+, and there is limited charging infrastructure. We feel that this presents an undue time and financial burden since the dealer closed down, and this is a manufacturing defect. I have repeatedly been in touch with MINI but have received very little support or advice other than spending an enormous amount of money to have the vehicle shipped out of state.

Digital instrument cluster of electric Mini SE (includes speedometer and battery/range information) turns off without warning while driving and does not turn back on until car is powered down for over half an hour. This has happened more than ten times. Vehicle was inspected by MINI dealer locally and no obvious equipment defect was identified, although they were able to replicate it happening. After disassembly and reassembly by dealer, issue stopped for about two weeks after car was returned to owner. Now it has begun again, to the point of turning off within a few minutes of driving every day, rendering car unusable as driver has no other speedometer in vehicle. After sitting for half an hour, the instrument cluster will turn on when the car is turned on next, only to go out again after a few minutes of driving. Other electronics in car do not appear affected and car operates normally.

After work, I started the car in a parking lot. Before leaving, a fire started under the hood behind the passenger side headlight. After using the jaws of life to take off the hood, the fire department contained the fire. No injuries. There was extensive damage to the right front. The contents were all smoke damaged. Neighboring cars were not damaged. The car has been totaled.

Tire model is: Hankook Ventus S1 Evo Z 225/35R18 87Y. Failure started when vehicle turned the "CHECK TIRE PRESSURE" alert on while driving. Pressure started to drop from 32 lbs to 16 lbs in about 15 minutes. Worth to note: no pot hole or any other object was hit during the day of the incident; or even previous days. After stopping, I noticed that the failure occurred in the inner face of the tire. Inner face was pretty degraded and inner treads were visible. A 15 inch long breakage line was visible. Car has 18k miles on it. When comparing the tire that failed to the rest, its degradation was much higher.

"Never compelled to sell my 2021 Mini Cooper S First time poster — Seven year Mini owner. Both of my Minis have been **Cooper S models,** loaded with leather package. I’ve also upgraded the stereo (all speakers) with BimmerTech. I love my Mini and don’t want to part with it — nothing I’ve driven (Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus) makes me feel as good or as much fun as my 2021 Mini. Should I be concerned about reliability or expensive repairs now that it’s out of warranty? 2. Is an extended warranty worth it for a 2021 Cooper S with 40K miles? "I wouldn’t mind the lack of updates if the experience were perfect. Dated on arrival map OTAs, random CarPlay bugs (that are the fault of the head unit), even simple LED light color has amnesia switching away from profile color at random despite a single key and profile used. The safety/ACC system near daily bugs out in situations it should not. Some people are waiting months to a year for a bug fix on their missing back up lines… #### polyphonic Are bugs more common on 2022+ models? We have a 2021 that has been pretty great, the only annoyance being the occasional CarPlay glitch requiring a re-pairing from scratch (has happened about 3-4 times in 2 years, but it does require you to pull over and fiddle with it for 5+ minutes to get going again). Other than that - no problems. The tech is definitely modest, but the fact that it has worked reliably has made life easy. Hopefully our 2023 model will be just as good. CarPlay hasn’t been perfect on any car I have owned or driven. I can honestly say it’s been best in the MINI. I do wonder if it can run in wired mode for better reliability. Certainly the phone wouldn’t heat up as much."

"#1· Oct 14, 2025 I have a question re: my 2025 MINI Cooper C. I just bought it brand new in June and it's my first MINI. It has a lot of tech my last car didn't have and I love it but I recently downloaded and installed an update called 7/2025 and instantly had some issues. The auto break hold deactivated, Apple CarPlay didn't work, the MINI personal assistant didn't recognize voice commands and I lost Sirius XM. I had an error message called SAT hardware error. I managed to get everything back and working but there's one minor thing that doesn't seem right and that is the list of radio stations under Infotainment. It used to have graphics that basically matched the colors of whatever experience I was in. It seems like the station icon graphics changed to a generic music note placeholder, or am I wrong and this change was intentional? I had the car into the dealership to get back Sirius XM which was the only thing I didn't figure out how to restore, and when I asked the guy about this radio thing he acted like I was crazy. Am I? Thanks for your help! Sorry if this is posted to the wrong forum."

The rest is is used as a buffer to prevent the battery from being charged to 100% or the capacity, or discharged fully to 0%.
