The 2024 Rivian R1T All-Terrain Dual Max (20in) puts down 665 hp, 355 miles of EPA range and a 172 kWh battery, and a worth-pursuing score, but only after a hard inspection and a fair price.
Score read
A 71/100 makes this a records-first inspection. Do not let the composite hide this split: software and driver-assist score is 86/100, while range and efficiency score is 57/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: owner satisfaction and range. Documented completion matters more than the recall count itself.
Price context
Used examples are running around $61,103. This trim started from $83,000 new, though options can push the actual sticker higher; treat the market number as your negotiation floor and pull a current KBB Fair Purchase before naming a price.

Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (57/100).
Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 355-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Dealers make ~$14,028 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 16 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

While traveling at highway speed on Interstate 95, the vehicle experienced a complete and sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle would not respond to the Vehicle Restart function. The driver was able to safely pull to the shoulder from the right lane. The vehicle was towed to a Rivian service center, where technicians identified a low-voltage event matching a known Rivian engineering investigation. Rivian confirmed no current repair exists and that engineering is actively working on software improvements. The vehicle was returned unrepaired after 13 days. Rivian also replaced the 12V battery under warranty at a prior service visit in July 2025 for a related electrical system defect. Two field service actions (FSAM-1507, FSAM-1794) have also been performed on this vehicle.

The entertainment and gauge cluster displays begin to slow down and stutter, eventually leading to a full reboot. This causes the ADAS view, as well as the blind spot cameras, and reverse camera to display a still image, even while the vehicle is moving, or display no image at all. Also, if this happens while Highway Drive Assist is active, the state of the system is not displayed and an audible chime is played.

I believed my car had a problem with the seals of the windows allowing severe wind noise. After attempted repair the problem persisted and, on closer inspection, it became evident that the driver side door is mis-installed and crooked. Rivian attempted to reprair this and only made it worse. The amount of wind/road noise that is coming in now is as if the windows was open. The door frame vibrates and whistles at speed. The mobile tech doesn't feel this is repairable but Rivian won't take responsibility for it. They have denied my BBB claim and I am pursuing a lemon lawyer.

Rivian alerted me that there was a “service action” related to the hub, and while waiting for that appointment, the hub came loose while driving and began grinding against the brakes and went into full system shutdown. The truck needed to be towed and the hub and brakes needed to be replaced. The truck was undrivae while driving at highway speeds and could have crashed. When questioned, the service center reiterated that this was “not a recall” but simply a head up. The repairs were covered under warranty.

What Owners Are Saying
"Another Owner review... I know these get redundant but feel like I have a bit of a unique perspective bc I've owned wayyy to many other cars and can compare. To start here is list of cars I've owned (in order) 1996 Volvo S60 2000 Saturn Ion 1999 Ford Explorer 2004 Chevy Cobalt 2004 Toyota 4Runner 2014 BMW 3 series 2015 Prius 2016 3 series 2018 4Runner 2019 5 series 2019 Ram 1500 2017 Tacoma 2018 Audi RS3 2018 Tesla Model X 2018 BMW M2 2021 Chevy Tahoe 2021 Land Rover Defender 2021 F150 Lariat 2022 F150 Lightning 2022 Porsche Taycan 2020 Mercedes GLS 2022 Tesla M3 2023 Rivian R1T To start here is my ranking of best vehicles I've owned in order 5. M3 4. F-150 Lariat 3. GLS 2. Model X 1. R1T Experience with R1T: I have owned the R1T for a few weeks now, have already had a few issues so I don't think I'm being idealistic, but this is hands down the best overall vehicle I have ever had. Size: The size is perfect. I am not a contractor so while I have always loved having a truck the full size was just too much to navigate in city setting and midsize was always a little cramped inside and no luxuries on midsize. Ride quality: The ride quality of the R1T is impressive and I'm surprised at some of the reviews I have read. The GLS is probably the most comfortable riding car I've owned, but the R1T is easily second. M2 most fun car to drive but can't really compare that to a truck. For the size tires (20in AT) it handles everything well and has great on road manors. Storage/Interior: The convenience of the storage options is huge and interior packaging is top of the line. Overall quality is leaps and bounds above Tesla and really does feel luxury. It's by no means BMW/Merc level but it's really nice. Tech: This is another area I am surprised people complain about so much, especially knowing it will only get better. I think it's way better than Sync and only pales to Tesla. I have had CarPlay on so many cars but honestly think the best overall experience is Tesla which does not have it. So I (in minority) am glad Rivian is focusing on their UI and not letting CarPlay take over. I also LOVE the screen sizes and layout. The thing I hated most about the lighting was the screen. It looks ridiculous, I much preferred the 12in horizontal screen in the Lariat. Speakers: probably the best standard system I have encountered. I do have the meridian system so can't speak to in house. Overall value: I don't know how you beat it. I think under $120k it holds up against anything. Why I'm excited about the future for Rivian: with everything I love there are so many places they can improve the vehicle. And that's a good thing bc I think it allows them to make small changes and stay competitive in the market. Little conveniences could help push the upper price (soft close doors, audio upgrades, interior choices, photochromic roof, continued UI upgrades) I also think they have a really great chance to corner a unique sedan market. How many people lo"
"A measly 1400 miles here but loving every minute of it! Came from a modified model 3 performance that was a ROCKET but the R1T beats it in almost every single way. No regrets selling the model 3 for this silver beast. Love love love this truck."
"> ProDriven said: > > The point being, Rivian's range calculation is significantly off when compared to other companies and many of us have data to prove it. > > > Click to expand... Bullshit. Rivian's range calculation, specifically the range remaining that is displayed when you navigate to a certain location, is pretty much spot-on. I have 10,000 miles of road trips saved in a spreadsheet that confirms this. If anything, Rivian is extremely conservative in its estimates and will tell you you will have a lot LESS range when you arrive than you end up having in real life. That's because the range calculation in the navigation knows where you are going, knows the elevation changes, knows your drive mode, and has learned your driving style including how fast you usually go on highways. That's enough to make a reasonable prediction of how many kWh you will use and what you will have remaining at your destination. Do you perhaps own a Tesla? Tesla is the only company that I know of that has systematically gamed the EPA rating system to try to make themselves look better. Every other company's EPA estimates are pretty much accurate in my experience. Both gas and EV. #38· Sep 10, 2024"
"I 100% agree with this last paragraph. When trips are in the navigation system I have always been at or above the estimated charge remaining when hitting charging stops or final destination. In a gen1 quad R1T with 21’s driving in all purpose I have found range estimates to be spot on for around town and short highway drives. I’d even say the towing range estimates are very accurate towing a 7k pound wake boat to and from a lake that is an hour away and significantly uphill in one direction. I could never trust the guess-o-meter in my M3 but in my 8 months of ownership I’ve been impressed with my R1T’s reliable estimates. #18· Sep 3, 2024 Rivian fared pretty well in estimated vs actual test range in a consumer reports article. Numbers are miles above or below estimated. #22· Sep 3, 2024"

"#1· Sep 1, 2024 We have had the vehicle a little over a month and non-stop issues. Was in the shop for 10 days and supposedly resolved the issues, but only 2 of the 4 issues resolved, but the 2 biggest issues still remain. We are losing 30% more charge in less then 100 miles of freeway only driving, flat terrain. We drove 45 miles the first day after the supposed repairs and used 72. The next day we drove 60 miles and used 92 miles. Service and follow through is the worst I have ever experienced. First texting, then long waits to no avail on the toll free line. Press 1 for a call back and of course no call backs. Very, very disappointed in this purchase and would not recommend buying one to anyone. We love the vehicle, just can’t continue with the ongoing issues 🙁 #2· Sep 1, 2024"
"Well this isn't a good feeling after owning the truck for 1 week to have all my sensors, cameras, LiDaR, air suspension, crash avoidance, traction control, ABS, stuck in conserve mode, etc for the second time. It's sketch while on snow and the suspension suddenly stops working and sinks to the bump stops ?. Basically the truck is in analog mode and all the safety systems are offline. Hard reboot and console reboot doesn't work. Letting the truck go into sleep fixed it once. It didn't have these issues until the latest firmware update 2024.43.01. How did this OTA get approved for production? Did they not do pre-production functional testing first? Maybe I should work for Rivian, I use to do firmware functional testing for hardware devices ? It's a 2022 used, the truck was fine until the update. Tech had me go through steps and put the truck to sleep. It fixed the problem but then it happened again but this time the suspension is sunk to the bump stops and the errors won't go away, it actually has a new error. It's botched because many gen 1 owners are having issues after the update."
