The 2024 Rivian R1T AT Performance Dual Standard Plus (20in) is rated at 665 hp, 277 miles of EPA range and a 99 kWh battery, and a mid-pack composite means the records-and-test-drive call matters more than the headline.
Score read
A 68/100 makes this worth comparing, not chasing. Do not let the composite hide this split: software and driver-assist score is 86/100, while range and efficiency score is 35/100. Reddit threads cluster around owner satisfaction and software tech — verify both against the service records. Documented completion matters more than the recall count itself.
Price context
This trim started from $78,000 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.

Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (35/100).
Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.
- Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.
Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 277-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Dealers make ~$14,028 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 16 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

While traveling at highway speed on Interstate 95, the vehicle experienced a complete and sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle would not respond to the Vehicle Restart function. The driver was able to safely pull to the shoulder from the right lane. The vehicle was towed to a Rivian service center, where technicians identified a low-voltage event matching a known Rivian engineering investigation. Rivian confirmed no current repair exists and that engineering is actively working on software improvements. The vehicle was returned unrepaired after 13 days. Rivian also replaced the 12V battery under warranty at a prior service visit in July 2025 for a related electrical system defect. Two field service actions (FSAM-1507, FSAM-1794) have also been performed on this vehicle.

The entertainment and gauge cluster displays begin to slow down and stutter, eventually leading to a full reboot. This causes the ADAS view, as well as the blind spot cameras, and reverse camera to display a still image, even while the vehicle is moving, or display no image at all. Also, if this happens while Highway Drive Assist is active, the state of the system is not displayed and an audible chime is played.

I believed my car had a problem with the seals of the windows allowing severe wind noise. After attempted repair the problem persisted and, on closer inspection, it became evident that the driver side door is mis-installed and crooked. Rivian attempted to reprair this and only made it worse. The amount of wind/road noise that is coming in now is as if the windows was open. The door frame vibrates and whistles at speed. The mobile tech doesn't feel this is repairable but Rivian won't take responsibility for it. They have denied my BBB claim and I am pursuing a lemon lawyer.

Rivian alerted me that there was a “service action” related to the hub, and while waiting for that appointment, the hub came loose while driving and began grinding against the brakes and went into full system shutdown. The truck needed to be towed and the hub and brakes needed to be replaced. The truck was undrivae while driving at highway speeds and could have crashed. When questioned, the service center reiterated that this was “not a recall” but simply a head up. The repairs were covered under warranty.

What Owners Are Saying
"Another Owner review... I know these get redundant but feel like I have a bit of a unique perspective bc I've owned wayyy to many other cars and can compare. To start here is list of cars I've owned (in order) 1996 Volvo S60 2000 Saturn Ion 1999 Ford Explorer 2004 Chevy Cobalt 2004 Toyota 4Runner 2014 BMW 3 series 2015 Prius 2016 3 series 2018 4Runner 2019 5 series 2019 Ram 1500 2017 Tacoma 2018 Audi RS3 2018 Tesla Model X 2018 BMW M2 2021 Chevy Tahoe 2021 Land Rover Defender 2021 F150 Lariat 2022 F150 Lightning 2022 Porsche Taycan 2020 Mercedes GLS 2022 Tesla M3 2023 Rivian R1T To start here is my ranking of best vehicles I've owned in order 5. M3 4. F-150 Lariat 3. GLS 2. Model X 1. R1T Experience with R1T: I have owned the R1T for a few weeks now, have already had a few issues so I don't think I'm being idealistic, but this is hands down the best overall vehicle I have ever had. Size: The size is perfect. I am not a contractor so while I have always loved having a truck the full size was just too much to navigate in city setting and midsize was always a little cramped inside and no luxuries on midsize. Ride quality: The ride quality of the R1T is impressive and I'm surprised at some of the reviews I have read. The GLS is probably the most comfortable riding car I've owned, but the R1T is easily second. M2 most fun car to drive but can't really compare that to a truck. For the size tires (20in AT) it handles everything well and has great on road manors. Storage/Interior: The convenience of the storage options is huge and interior packaging is top of the line. Overall quality is leaps and bounds above Tesla and really does feel luxury. It's by no means BMW/Merc level but it's really nice. Tech: This is another area I am surprised people complain about so much, especially knowing it will only get better. I think it's way better than Sync and only pales to Tesla. I have had CarPlay on so many cars but honestly think the best overall experience is Tesla which does not have it. So I (in minority) am glad Rivian is focusing on their UI and not letting CarPlay take over. I also LOVE the screen sizes and layout. The thing I hated most about the lighting was the screen. It looks ridiculous, I much preferred the 12in horizontal screen in the Lariat. Speakers: probably the best standard system I have encountered. I do have the meridian system so can't speak to in house. Overall value: I don't know how you beat it. I think under $120k it holds up against anything. Why I'm excited about the future for Rivian: with everything I love there are so many places they can improve the vehicle. And that's a good thing bc I think it allows them to make small changes and stay competitive in the market. Little conveniences could help push the upper price (soft close doors, audio upgrades, interior choices, photochromic roof, continued UI upgrades) I also think they have a really great chance to corner a unique sedan market. How many people lo"
"A measly 1400 miles here but loving every minute of it! Came from a modified model 3 performance that was a ROCKET but the R1T beats it in almost every single way. No regrets selling the model 3 for this silver beast. Love love love this truck."
"11 reasons to appreciate the quality and product maturity of the Rivian R1T In short: a list of problems in the $170K+ Lucid which are fully functional in the (then) $70K+ R1T. While watching an Edmunds review of the Lucid (two or three times the launch price of the R1T) they list 11 (or more) problems in the software that make the Lucid ownership experience … less than ok. They go on to compare quality and subtleties of materials and the "feel" of the cabin to other high end luxury vehicles (I see Rivian as a high end luxury vehicle in a niche market, sold in very small numbers to "cognoscenti" buyers who are fully in the loop on what's really happening in the EV world.) As one tiny gear in the mechanism of the "early adopter" phase, I enjoy offering feedback and feature requests to help Rivian build its business, participate from the customer perspective as they implement its support infrastructure and generally learn how to be a car company, It's fun and interesting to have a ticket to ride on this adventure and get a free truck with every ticket. I'm afraid the Lucid owner is not getting the same quality of adventure and this review struck me as "a list of some things we take for granted" when driving an R1T. p.s. I'm still impatient to get at least an OTA beta of tank turn mode. : )"
"Long-Term Battery Degradation Analysis of My Rivian R1T Launch Edition (via Home Assistant) I’ve been tracking my Rivian R1T Launch Edition’s battery health using Home Assistant with the Rivian integration. This setup lets me pull real-time sensor data directly from the vehicle (in this case, sensor.battery\_capacity), which records the estimated usable battery capacity over time. Since the R1T Launch Edition came with Rivian’s **Large pack (\~135 kWh OEM)**, I’ve been curious about how degradation looks in practice and when Rivian’s warranty replacement threshold (80% of OEM, \~110 kWh) might realistically come into play. I noticed it really started to drop down in the past month so I wanted to look deeper into it: # 📊 Data & Method * Collected raw data points via Home Assistant from Jan 2025 onward. * Exported the history into CSV and ran a **linear regression** on capacity vs. time. * Current measured capacity is **\~128 kWh**, down slightly from the \~130 kWh starting point in my logs. # 📉 Degradation Rate * Trend slope: **–0.0051 kWh/day**, or \~**1.86 kWh per year**. * This equates to **\~1.4% loss per year** from the OEM 135 kWh. * Compared to published EV fleet averages (Tesla, Hyundai, etc.), this sits on the *low end* of typical degradation rates. # 🔮 Projection Based on my original date from the start of tracking, here’s what it looks like: * **80% warranty threshold (110 kWh)** projected around **October 6, 2035**. * With 95% confidence, the window ranges from **July 30, 2034** (earliest) to **May 7, 2037** (latest). So at this rate, my pack has **\~10–12 years** before dropping below Rivian’s warranty cutoff. That’s with normal daily driving and charging habits (mostly AC L2, occasional DC fast charging). HOWEVER, when I reduce the dataset to just the past month, when I am seeing a steeper drop-off, the extrapolated projection, extended out to the point where your R1T battery is expected to hit **110 kWh (80% threshold)**. * **Trendline (red)** runs all the way through the projected crossing. * **Blue line** marks the estimated crossing date: **October 26, 2027**. # 📈 Visualization The graph shows: * Orange scatter points = measured Home Assistant data * Red line = regression trendline * Green dashed line = 110 kWh threshold * Blue dashed line = predicted crossing point # ⚡ Takeaway * Real-world data + Home Assistant makes it possible to do your own long-term fleet-style battery studies. * At the original degradation rate, I’ll likely still be comfor"

"Rivian R1T QM to R1S Gen 2 Dual Max - Don't do it "Sometimes we don't truly appreciate the value of something until it's gone." Every day I drive my Gen 2 R1S, that sentiment hits home. My family situation changed, and I needed a bigger car. I could have made do with my R1T, but after seeing all the glowing reviews of the R1S, I decided to take the plunge. I went for the Dual-Motor Max Pack for the extra range. For reference, my R1T had a VIN in the 8000 range, and my R1S is in the 54,000 range. **Negatives:** 1. **Acceleration:** The Dual-Motor Max doesn’t hold a candle to the Quad-Motor. If you’re used to the Quad’s acceleration, the Dual will leave you disappointed. The way it is tuned, it feels sluggish. 2. **Suspension:** The Gen 2 R1S suspension feels floaty. It lacks the stability and sporty feel of the R1T. 3. **Audio:** The audio system has taken an enormous hit. I’ve made a separate post detailing this. 4. **Material Quality:** The plastics used on the doors, steering wheel, and other areas feel cheaper. The cabin no longer has that premium touch. It’s hard to put into words, but once you sit inside, you’ll notice. 5. **Doors:** The doors feel lighter and less substantial. The locking mechanism has also changed for the worse, losing that solid, high-quality feel. 6. **Range:** Despite the new motor's supposed efficiency, there’s little difference in real-world range. My R1T had a 135 kWh battery, while the R1S has a 142 kWh battery, but I’ve only noticed a 10-15 mile difference. In fact, I used to get around 330 miles on a single charge with my R1T, and conserve mode was always there when needed. 7. **Automatic Front-Wheel Drive:** This feature is enabled by default on highways, and in some situations where I needed quick acceleration, the vehicle hesitated, taking a moment to switch to the rear motor and regain traction. 8. **Cabin Noise:** The HVAC system in the R1S is noticeably louder compared to the R1T, even at the lowest setting. I’m not sure if the cooling systems are different, but the noise inside the cabin is significant. 9. Service issues - Car has alignment issues, I check for service dates, it shows availability in December. 10. Software issues - So many error notifications. Usb c ports stop working every other day. Have to reboot the vehicle to fix. **Things I knew but still miss:** 1. The 12V charger in the dash—essential for someone on the road frequently and needing quick charging for multiple devices. 2. One year less on the warranty. 3. Reduced frunk storage space in the new model. 4. No charging improvements 5. The rear seats, 2nd row and 3rd are very difficult to adjust. 6. Console charger, still unusable. It's been 3 years. Come on now. **Positives:** 1. The camera. Great picture quality. While they might have made improvements under the hood, the overall cheapening of the vehicle has tarnished my day-to-day experience. In hindsight, I wish I had kept my R1T. It feels like Rivian has done a ba"
"Well this isn't a good feeling after owning the truck for 1 week to have all my sensors, cameras, LiDaR, air suspension, crash avoidance, traction control, ABS, stuck in conserve mode, etc for the second time. It's sketch while on snow and the suspension suddenly stops working and sinks to the bump stops ?. Basically the truck is in analog mode and all the safety systems are offline. Hard reboot and console reboot doesn't work. Letting the truck go into sleep fixed it once. It didn't have these issues until the latest firmware update 2024.43.01. How did this OTA get approved for production? Did they not do pre-production functional testing first? Maybe I should work for Rivian, I use to do firmware functional testing for hardware devices ?
