2024 Rivian R1T Dual Large

"Raw Review of Rivian The Rivian R2 is coming s00n in 2026 and we wanted to share more personal details about our journey with Rivian over the past 3.5 years. We come from a background of sports cars and trucks/SUVs that we have truly enjoyed over the past couple of decades. These include Audi Quattro, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Subaru WRX, Toyota TRD PROs (4Runner, Tundra, Sequoia), and Porsches (Cayenne, Taycan). Each vehicle had a unique list of pros/cons and we remember each car fondly for their respective time in our lives. We first heard about Rivian and RJ Scaringe (CEO) when they revealed themselves publicly at the LA Auto Show in 2018. After sealing a large deal with Amazon for electric van manufacturing, we decided to take the leap of faith and placed our reservation deposit for the R1S in April 2019. After several years of waiting, the R1T trucks started to deliver in 2021 and we finally took delivery of our 7-seater R1S SUV in September 2022 at the brand-new service center in Austin, TX. WE LOVE GROGU OUR LAUNCH GREEN R1S! We drove all around Central Texas to include camping trips and off-roading. We drove our kids out to Colorado when we moved to Colorado Springs in 2023. Subsequently, we have road-tripped to amazing destinations in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, California, and Wyoming. Charging along the way has become easier and easier with each passing year thanks to the growing infrastructure. With our young kids, we typically take pit stops every few hours for snacks and bio-breaks during which time we typically charge up the Rivian. Some hotels and campgrounds even offer overnight charging at their parking lots so that we are all “topped-off” the following morning for our next adventure! Here are a list of specific reasons why we love our Rivian: \-smooth and linear acceleration with instant throttle response \-regenerative braking allowing for single-pedal driving \-height-adjustable air suspension for driving in varying on and off-road conditions \-home charging from the comfort of our garage \-software improvements and upgrades that continue to evolve our driving experience in the best way possible \-phone app integration for improved user functionality to include Live Camera views and temperature control features \-abundant storage capacity in the FRUNK and rear cargo spaces \-glass roof allows for an open cabin feel and a totally immersive experience in nature \-Meridian sound system is epic for listening to music on the go and for watching YouTube videos while parked \-Gear Guard Gary is a fun Rivian mascot that keeps our 7-seater SUV fun and interactive for the whole family \-interior design is comfortable and inviting like a relaxing living room space (minimalistic but not too spartan in all of the right ways) \-Camp Mode makes the R1S super useful for getaway glamping trips \-fun interior and exterior lighting features that are modifiable and enjoyable during the Halloween season \-the bir"

"2+ Years and 27,000 miles I have an early VIN R1T. After more than 2 years (March, 2022) and 27,000, I thought someone might wonder what long (ish) term ownership looks like. Put simply, the Rivian R1T is the best vehicle I have ever owned, driven or ridden in. That includes: BMW, Tesla, Bentley, Subaru, Honda, Toyota (180,000 miles on that one), Mercedes, and Ford. The R1T has gone on long west coast road trips to visit national and state parks. It has been overlanding through coastal mountains. We go to the mountains to ski. We trailer motorcycles to remote areas. One of my kids is a rower so we are constantly dealing with piles of wet and dirty crap. Pets and people are in and out a lot. Even with above average abuse, the interior remains immaculate. The gear tunnel is so practical and useful. I thought it was a gimmick at first, but is so much more. The seats are the most comfortable car seats especially on long drives. The general build quality continues to impress me. Oh and the truck is so much fun to drive and quick off the line. My only gripe is the charging pad and dirt trap in the console. That is a small price to pay for a vehicle I am happy to get in every day."

"Driving with confidence! I can’t express enough how Rivian nailed the estimated miles upon arrival when traveling. I had 4 stops on my trip, same with the model y. I was driving 85 mph for most of the trip and I always arrived with what they estimated or 8 miles more. I also had the dirtbikes in the bed and still got accurate numbers. There were so many times I would drive the model y and my estimated arrival to the supercharger station percentage would continuously decrease and anxiety would set in. I would have to change my driving habits. Not with Rivian. Excellent job with this! Charging I choose to use only Tesla superchargers. I bought the A2Z level 3 charger, and that thing worked like a charm. It was instant in connection. When I take trips from nj to Nashville and vice versa it typically takes me 12 hr 30 min with a gas car. With the model y it takes me 14 hr to 14 hr 30 min. With the Rivian it took me 14 hr 30 min. So I didn’t really notice a difference between model y and Rivian. Having two dogs and a 2/3-year-old, the vehicles would always be done charging before we were ready to leave, so for me the added time works."

I've had no issues with bugs, although I know there have been a lot of reports, and then there was the infotainment brick issue. "Rivian R1T QM to R1S Gen 2 Dual Max - Don't do it "Sometimes we don't truly appreciate the value of something until it's gone." Every day I drive my Gen 2 R1S, that sentiment hits home. My family situation changed, and I needed a bigger car. I could have made do with my R1T, but after seeing all the glowing reviews of the R1S, I decided to take the plunge. I went for the Dual-Motor Max Pack for the extra range. For reference, my R1T had a VIN in the 8000 range, and my R1S is in the 54,000 range. **Negatives:** 1. **Acceleration:** The Dual-Motor Max doesn’t hold a candle to the Quad-Motor. If you’re used to the Quad’s acceleration, the Dual will leave you disappointed. The way it is tuned, it feels sluggish. 2. **Suspension:** The Gen 2 R1S suspension feels floaty. It lacks the stability and sporty feel of the R1T. 3. **Audio:** The audio system has taken an enormous hit. I’ve made a separate post detailing this. 4. **Material Quality:** The plastics used on the doors, steering wheel, and other areas feel cheaper. The cabin no longer has that premium touch. It’s hard to put into words, but once you sit inside, you’ll notice. 5. **Doors:** The doors feel lighter and less substantial. The locking mechanism has also changed for the worse, losing that solid, high-quality feel. 6. **Range:** Despite the new motor's supposed efficiency, there’s little difference in real-world range. My R1T had a 135 kWh battery, while the R1S has a 142 kWh battery, but I’ve only noticed a 10-15 mile difference. In fact, I used to get around 330 miles on a single charge with my R1T, and conserve mode was always there when needed. 7. **Automatic Front-Wheel Drive:** This feature is enabled by default on highways, and in some situations where I needed quick acceleration, the vehicle hesitated, taking a moment to switch to the rear motor and regain traction. 8. **Cabin Noise:** The HVAC system in the R1S is noticeably louder compared to the R1T, even at the lowest setting. I’m not sure if the cooling systems are different, but the noise inside the cabin is significant. 9. Service issues - Car has alignment issues, I check for service dates, it shows availability in December. 10. Software issues - So many error notifications. Usb c ports stop working every other day. Have to reboot the vehicle to fix. **Things I knew but still miss:** 1. The 12V charger in the dash—essential for someone on the road frequently and needing quick charging for multiple devices. 2. One year less on the warranty. 3. Reduced frunk storage space in the new model. 4. No charging improvements 5. The rear seats, 2nd row and 3rd are very difficult to adjust. 6. Console charger, still unusable. It's been 3 years. Come on now. **Positives:** 1. The camera. Great picture quality. While they might have made improvements under the hood, the overall cheapening of the vehicle has tarnished my day-to-day experience. In hindsight, I wish I had kept my R1T. "Ventilated seats were amazing on the 800+ mile drive. It was a really hot day and the sun was beating throughout the drive, the ventilated seats felt so cold I thought my back was wet. But that’s where it ended for the ventilated seats, the day after I got home from the drive, the ventilated seats were maybe 5 percent of the power they used to have. I can no longer feel it on my back. The legs work maybe 20 percent. This is on max setting. I had to go to the service center for them to install the tonneau cover and I brought up the ventilated seat issue. The tech right away said yea I can’t feel it on the back. After checking the 2 demo vehicles and the loaner they gave me, there was no difference in the ventilated seats. They all felt like mine. I think this is a major issue Rivian needs to address. The service manager said they can warranty the seats out but I don’t think this issue has been addressed. If I get new seats I’ll end up with the same problem again. This is an issue owners will need to escalate in order for there to be a change. This issue is a great disappointment that it has not been addressed. The tech manager said he would escalate it and follow up with me, but I haven’t heard anything and doubt I will."

"Well this isn't a good feeling after owning the truck for 1 week to have all my sensors, cameras, LiDaR, air suspension, crash avoidance, traction control, ABS, stuck in conserve mode, etc for the second time. It's sketch while on snow and the suspension suddenly stops working and sinks to the bump stops ?. Basically the truck is in analog mode and all the safety systems are offline. Hard reboot and console reboot doesn't work. Letting the truck go into sleep fixed it once. It didn't have these issues until the latest firmware update 2024.43.01. How did this OTA get approved for production? Did they not do pre-production functional testing first? Maybe I should work for Rivian, I use to do firmware functional testing for hardware devices ?
