The 2024 Rivian R1T Performance Dual Standard Plus (21in) is rated at 665 hp, 315 miles of EPA range and a 99 kWh battery, and a mid-pack composite means the records-and-test-drive call matters more than the headline.
Score read
A 69/100 makes this worth comparing, not chasing. Software and driver-assist score is the cleaner read at 100/100; owner feedback score needs more diligence at 50/100. Reddit threads cluster around range and software tech — verify both against the service records. A clean VIN lookup matters more than the headline count.
Price context
This trim started from $78,000 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.

- $ Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation
Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Verify Owner feedback is the part to read carefully (50/100).
Mitigation Read the complaint themes and ask whether this VIN has already had those issues repaired.
- Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.
Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 315-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Read the complaint themes, not just the count, and ask the seller whether those issues have shown up on this VIN.
VIN status first This model has 6 NHTSA recall records. The exact VIN lookup decides whether the car in front of you is clear.

Dealers make ~$14,028 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 16 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

Rivian alerted me that there was a “service action” related to the hub, and while waiting for that appointment, the hub came loose while driving and began grinding against the brakes and went into full system shutdown. The truck needed to be towed and the hub and brakes needed to be replaced. The truck was undrivae while driving at highway speeds and could have crashed. When questioned, the service center reiterated that this was “not a recall” but simply a head up. The repairs were covered under warranty.

While traveling at highway speed on Interstate 95, the vehicle experienced a complete and sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle would not respond to the Vehicle Restart function. The driver was able to safely pull to the shoulder from the right lane. The vehicle was towed to a Rivian service center, where technicians identified a low-voltage event matching a known Rivian engineering investigation. Rivian confirmed no current repair exists and that engineering is actively working on software improvements. The vehicle was returned unrepaired after 13 days. Rivian also replaced the 12V battery under warranty at a prior service visit in July 2025 for a related electrical system defect. Two field service actions (FSAM-1507, FSAM-1794) have also been performed on this vehicle.

The entertainment and gauge cluster displays begin to slow down and stutter, eventually leading to a full reboot. This causes the ADAS view, as well as the blind spot cameras, and reverse camera to display a still image, even while the vehicle is moving, or display no image at all. Also, if this happens while Highway Drive Assist is active, the state of the system is not displayed and an audible chime is played.

I believed my car had a problem with the seals of the windows allowing severe wind noise. After attempted repair the problem persisted and, on closer inspection, it became evident that the driver side door is mis-installed and crooked. Rivian attempted to reprair this and only made it worse. The amount of wind/road noise that is coming in now is as if the windows was open. The door frame vibrates and whistles at speed. The mobile tech doesn't feel this is repairable but Rivian won't take responsibility for it. They have denied my BBB claim and I am pursuing a lemon lawyer.

What Owners Are Saying
"Consumer Reports and Rivian owners The most recent CR study of cars showed some interesting results: Rivian was the only brand which scored 5/5 in “would you buy again?” question—no other brand earned that high a score. On the other hand, those same owners were brutally honest regarding defects and issues with their cars. The “predicted reliability” scores for R1T and R1S (especially) were not good. For context: This is not JD Power, it’s more or less restricted to CR readers. But the same people who expressed such enthusiasm for buying another Rivian didn’t pull their punches in expressing frustrations and disappointments with their R1. A brand with a broader product line is most likely going to have more noise in their numbers—the fact Rivian is limited currently to the R1 models may provide an advantage in these results. Still, the enthusiasm of the owners bodes well for Rivian. They will be the evangelists for the brand and help boost awareness and positive public image."
"Real World Roadtrip Range: Audi E-Tron vs. Rivian R1T TAKEAWAY: * Can't decide between a Large vs. Max pack? **Get a large.** * Standard+ vs. Large? Unless you're driving to remote locations often, the **standard+** is good enough, especially once NACS opens for more peace of mind. * Only get a Max if you tow far and often. Nerd post: I'm the owner of an R1T (Quad Large 20") and a 2019 Audi E-Tron Prestige. I often visit family in Springfield, OR from Auburn, WA (south Seattle). This trip is 266 miles one way, requiring a charging stop for both vehicles. The max highway range for the Audi is about 190 miles. In the Rivian it's 250 to 270 miles depending on wind/weather (20" wheels on the Rivian). Due to the excellent charging curve of the Audi, its roadtrip capabilities are actually pretty great for a vehicle with such low max range. The Rivian however, has a more traditional charging curve. Because the I-5 corridor has very reliable and plentiful stations, I have no concern over charging stations being down. **The question is: which vehicle is best to drive for this roadtrip? Do I go with more range in the Rivian, or drive the Audi instead?** So I did some math charing at L3 stations (150 kWh+): * In 25 minutes I gain: * 140 miles in the Audi * 135 miles in the Rivian * In 35 minutes I gain: * 172 miles in the Audi * 176 miles in the Rivian * For a 90% battery charge (5-95%) it takes: * 45 minutes in the Audi (4.44 miles per minute) * 85 minutes in the Rivian (3.05 miles per minute) That was surprising to me. The numbers above are optimal for the"
"6th leg. At end of trip arrived home with estimated 28 miles of range remaining, so didn’t stop and instead continued another 13 miles down the road, then turned around and drove back to burn off the last few miles and see what the vehicle would really do at close to zero. Received ‘Low Battery’ warning at 5 miles remaining and arrived at home with SOC at 1% and 1 estimated mile remaining. Per on-screen trip monitor: 315.4 miles; 6 hours 30 min. driving; average speed: 48 mph. YMMV So… in great weather, in flat elevation Florida: Estimated Range: 369 miles; Actual Range: 315 miles (85% of Rivian estimate) In the years since I first reserved my R1T, charging options have changed of course, and Rivian just recently opened the Daytona Beach RAN charger, which is right along our preferred route and maybe 2 min. off the interstate. And with Tesla chargers coming online for us, good choices will become even more plentiful. So I am happy there is now no reason to regularly tax the R1T's battery with 100% to zero charge cycles… we’ll just stop by the RAN for a quick fill up on the way up or back. But nice to know what is possible if needed. Hope this is helpful to others considering a Max Pack... even though the Max Pack is not the MAX Pack we all hoped for years ago."
"Weekly Rivian Roundup: R2, Apple Watch + Rivian, and Q4 Earnings [2/20/2026] # What The Community's Talking About This week on r/rivian, the community has been buzzing about Rivian's latest software update and what it means for the ownership experience. Electronic door latches on the R2 sparked debate after Rivian's software chief jumped on Reddit to address safety concerns—the company explained that the system has full power redundancy and can automatically unlock doors after a collision, though some owners remain skeptical about software-defined door handles. Meanwhile, a post titled 'The Wet Handshake' struck a nerve with early R1 owners who are frustrated with long-standing software bugs like erratic HVAC behavior and driver-assist features disabling in light rain. The comments were split—some owners echoed the frustration about service wait times stretching 4+ months, while others pointed out that Rivian still has the highest owner satisfaction rating despite reliability issues. On the positive side, plenty of folks shared their enthusiasm about the new 2026.03 software update bringing Apple Watch support and improved cold weather transparency, with most agreeing these incremental improvements show Rivian is listening. Stock performance (RIVN: +11.4% this week) came"
"1. “Proximity” lock/unlock feature and the ability to specify behavior at home no longer works. Truck unlocks every time you get remotely close to it. I have tried to reset its home behavior, (lock only or off) multiple times with no change in actual behavior. 2. Perhaps related; The garage door feature which appears on the driver Instrument screen, and enables you to open or close a specified garage door using the far right steering wheel button when you approach or leave your specified “ home” location no longer appears as an option to use. I’m wondering if the recognition of “home” as a location, or inability too, is causing both of these abode issues. I have not found in settings, a way to reset a “home” location and also confirmed “home” is a set favorite in Rivian Maps, if somehow related. 3. Finally, the driver seat position memory setting fails after reset. For both “owner” and “driver” settings. The system loses the memory settings for both constantly. Anyone else experience these issues after the latest software update? Or perhaps can guide on setting changes that may address these issues? Note: our RIT was at the service center for 2.5 weeks for several service and warranty issues (tonneau cover, sub-frame replacement…etc). Service experience was great from Rivian, but above problems started the day after we picked the truck up and updated software to latest version (to get Apple Music)."

A bit disappointed that my estimated range (on ATs) was as far off as it was from my actual range, but probably not surprising. And 'remaining miles' seems to have tracked correctly. Having never run it down to zero, I was a bit concerned that when my estimated miles got low, it would suddenly jump to zero remaining and roll to a stop!
