Buyer brief · 248 words

The 2025 Rivian R1T Dual Large (20in) packs 665 hp, 300 miles of EPA range and a 129 kWh battery, and the score gets it into the conversation; battery and service records decide whether to make an offer.

Score read

A 71/100 makes this a paperwork-and-test-drive decision. Software and driver-assist score is 94/100, but range and efficiency score is only 55/100. Owners on Reddit repeatedly cite range and owner satisfaction as recurring problems. Treat missing repair records as a price problem, not a footnote.

Price context

Bring your own comps Pull current comps before negotiating

Used examples are running around $76,300. This trim started from $76,900 new, though options can push the actual sticker higher; treat the market number as your negotiation floor and pull a current KBB Fair Purchase before naming a price.

Who this is for

Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (55/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 300-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

I leased my Rivian on June 28th. Around July 21st, the vehicle started to drift to the left. On August 19th, my vehicle started to develop bump steer over uneven road surfaces. I brought my vehicle in for service on August 20th. From August 20th to now, my vehicle has had 3 alignments performed, none of them have been maintained spec. Attached are screenshots/pictures of the alignments. Between the first and second alignment the vehicle was driven about ~50 miles. Between the second and third it was driven about another 50 miles. I do not have exact mileage as Rivian has not released service records to me. My vehicle does not track straight on any surface. In addition, because of the regenerative breaking of the Rivian, when you stop the vehicle it pulls significantly to the right, approximately a half lane for every 75 feet. My concern is that the vehicle cannot maintain an alignment over the course of ~110 miles, does not track straight, exhibits bump steer, and Rivian has no available solve to this behavior.

We leased this R1T from Polestar Boston, though we live in Vt, because it was assured to us that in the event of a warranty or recall issue, Polestar Boston would pick up the car and tow to the service center for the repair. Now with this turn signal recall, the gentelman on the phone told me no... that they will not come repair the recall. That if we want it fixed, we have to drive the 4 hours to Boston and they will change the blinkers for us. What legal rights do we have here? thank you

While scheduling service for NHTSA recall No. 25V-387/FSAM-1693 (Front Turn Signal Lamps malfunction that leads to no fulfillment of FMVSS 108 requirements) I was refused correction of the recall by the Rivian Miami Service Center rep (Service Advisor Joel). I was informed that Rivian has informed the Service Advisors that this recall will only be performed on already malfunctioning lamps or in cold weather areas (car is in Miami). However, none of this is defined in the recall notice sent, nor in the Rivian and NHTSA recall database. Requested written confirmation by Rivian of this directive to both the Service Advisor and Service Representative but neither had one. The advisor mentioned he had seen one in the past but does not recall where. Meanwhile, Rivian is refusing addressing the recall on my vehicle.

"2 Months. 3500 Miles Later // Rivian R1T Thoughts, Concerns & Prayers (Review/First Impression) Two months ago my life changed for the better when I got my R1T. Let me just say; I love this truck, I love this truck, I love this truck. The R1T is also my first-ever EV. After two months and 3500 miles, I'm here to tell you all that I have loved, hated, and everything in between. I hope this can be helpful for anyone who is considering making the jump to the Rivian family / EV world. Last Vehicle: 2020 Ford Escape SE Hybrid Rivian Config: 2023 Rivian R1T, Adv. Pkg., Quad Motor, Ocean Coast/Dark Ash Wood, Rivian Blue, 21" Wheels **First Thoughts** \-Wow. This truck is stunning. I never did a First Mile (I know that was dumb, but I recommend everyone do a First Mile). But holy cow the inside of this truck is a work of art. \-Dang, this thing is Fast!! Pulling out of the SC and first time letting loose a little and Holy S&#%! This is a truck that drives like a sports car. \-The sound system is incredible. I love listening to music in this rig, it just sounds so good. \-Love my color/interior combo. Definitely a little worried about keeping it clean in the long run, but I'm hopeful. **Pros** \-The acceleration. This truck has made me a speed demon. You'll love showing off launches to your friends, but no one ever talks about all the solo launches you'll do owning this thing. Definitely have broken my previous land speed record as well. On a practical level, the truck's acceleration is great when you need to speed up and pass someone or get to speed on an on-ramp. \-The ride is incredibly smooth. While the truck may drive like a sports car, it certainly rides like a truck. Roomy inside for all passengers. Even smooth off-road once you kick it into off-road mode. Mostly have only played with All Purpose, Sport, and Off-Road: Auto. Excited to play with those more, but honestly it's just truly amazing how differently the truck handles in different modes. It's like driving a whole new vehicle each time. \-No gas!!! I have an L2 charger at home and use DCFC for road trips. Around town with the L2 charger is amazing. The savings I've had for owning a similar-sized ICE truck are insane. No oil changes, much less maintenance. Definitely loving the EV lifestyle so far. \-Holy storage Batman. Storage everywhere!! Frunk, Gear Tunnel, Bed, Bed Compartment, Back Seat Compartment. I don't think I've come close to filling up this truck once yet on any of our trips. \-The Tech in this truck is amazing. I love the big multiple screens/displays. Clear and easy to see. Same for all the cameras. The top-down view is amazing for parking. I was worried about parking a truck around the city, but the cameras make it a breeze. Fast phone chargers. 120v outlets everywhere. Air compressor in the bed. This truck is a tech masterpiece. Always a crowd pleaser, some party trick to show off. \-OTA updates are the future for vehicles! The truck has gotten a handful"

"Another Owner review... I know these get redundant but feel like I have a bit of a unique perspective bc I've owned wayyy to many other cars and can compare. To start here is list of cars I've owned (in order) 1996 Volvo S60 2000 Saturn Ion 1999 Ford Explorer 2004 Chevy Cobalt 2004 Toyota 4Runner 2014 BMW 3 series 2015 Prius 2016 3 series 2018 4Runner 2019 5 series 2019 Ram 1500 2017 Tacoma 2018 Audi RS3 2018 Tesla Model X 2018 BMW M2 2021 Chevy Tahoe 2021 Land Rover Defender 2021 F150 Lariat 2022 F150 Lightning 2022 Porsche Taycan 2020 Mercedes GLS 2022 Tesla M3 2023 Rivian R1T To start here is my ranking of best vehicles I've owned in order 5. M3 4. F-150 Lariat 3. GLS 2. Model X 1. R1T Experience with R1T: I have owned the R1T for a few weeks now, have already had a few issues so I don't think I'm being idealistic, but this is hands down the best overall vehicle I have ever had. Size: The size is perfect. I am not a contractor so while I have always loved having a truck the full size was just too much to navigate in city setting and midsize was always a little cramped inside and no luxuries on midsize. Ride quality: The ride quality of the R1T is impressive and I'm surprised at some of the reviews I have read. The GLS is probably the most comfortable riding car I've owned, but the R1T is easily second. M2 most fun car to drive but can't really compare that to a truck. For the size tires (20in AT) it handles everything well and has great on road manors. Storage/Interior: The convenience of the storage options is huge and interior packaging is top of the line. Overall quality is leaps and bounds above Tesla and really does feel luxury. It's by no means BMW/Merc level but it's really nice. Tech: This is another area I am surprised people complain about so much, especially knowing it will only get better. I think it's way better than Sync and only pales to Tesla. I have had CarPlay on so many cars but honestly think the best overall experience is Tesla which does not have it. So I (in minority) am glad Rivian is focusing on their UI and not letting CarPlay take over. I also LOVE the screen sizes and layout. The thing I hated most about the lighting was the screen. It looks ridiculous, I much preferred the 12in horizontal screen in the Lariat. Speakers: probably the best standard system I have encountered. I do have the meridian system so can't speak to in house. Overall value: I don't know how you beat it. I think under $120k it holds up against anything. Why I'm excited about the future for Rivian: with everything I love there are so many places they can improve the vehicle. And that's a good thing bc I think it allows them to make small changes and stay competitive in the market. Little conveniences could help push the upper price (soft close doors, audio upgrades, interior choices, photochromic roof, continued UI upgrades) I also think they have a really great chance to corner a unique sedan market. "> ProDriven said: > > The point being, Rivian's range calculation is significantly off when compared to other companies and many of us have data to prove it. > > > Click to expand... Bullshit. Rivian's range calculation, specifically the range remaining that is displayed when you navigate to a certain location, is pretty much spot-on. I have 10,000 miles of road trips saved in a spreadsheet that confirms this. If anything, Rivian is extremely conservative in its estimates and will tell you you will have a lot LESS range when you arrive than you end up having in real life. That's because the range calculation in the navigation knows where you are going, knows the elevation changes, knows your drive mode, and has learned your driving style including how fast you usually go on highways. That's enough to make a reasonable prediction of how many kWh you will use and what you will have remaining at your destination. Do you perhaps own a Tesla? Tesla is the only company that I know of that has systematically gamed the EPA rating system to try to make themselves look better. Every other company's EPA estimates are pretty much accurate in my experience. Both gas and EV. #38· Sep 10, 2024"

"1\. Only minor stuff; some infotainment glitches, losing settings, driver assistance items erroring out occasionally - all fixed with a quick soft reset. I know a lot of folks compare to Tesla and gripe but IMO, the SW and features are very good, especially when compared to legacy auto. 2\. I had a Gen 1 R1T and now a Gen 2 R1S. For me, it was a noticeable improvement in build quality. Much better initial fit on panels. Some of the common rattles from the Gen 1 (center dash!), not present in this Gen 2. Having said that, there are still some rattles and wind noises I find myself chasing down. I came from German cars and little things they do on fit and sound deadening (better seals, felt in places, etc) are still missing on the Rivians. But if you like to tinker it doesn't take much to make it quieter. From a mechanical build quality, my Gen 2 feels very good. The drive and ride quality is much better than my Gen 1 was. 4\. First choice, probably another R1S or maybe go back to the R1T (I miss the gear tunnel and bed of the T but prefer the back seat legroom of the S). If I had to go ICE, probably the Toyota Land Cruiser ("good enough"). I'd also take a look at the new BMW EV's if I didnt plan to off-road. Owned many BMWs and was always happy with the experience."

"I wish I had seen this post. I picked my R1S Gen 2 up in mid-Sept. 2024 and have only had constant issues and major ones and many: 12 Volt battery, electrical circut failure, locking not always working properl, car not turning off after parked, turtle mode going on multiple times, now danger electrical shock warning on the dash, the list is really long. It has already been in the shop for two weeks which means I have only had in my possession for a short time and most of that time it has not worked. I wanted to love this car but now am so disappointed and angry about it. Trying to see if I can return the car as a lemon. #46· Nov 10, 2024 Thanks, @Zipper, for your response. Glad your wife is getting better than advertised efficiency/range with her Tesla. That's not what I hear from most Tesla owners, but maybe they've improved or maybe she's unusual. "#1· Sep 1, 2024 We have had the vehicle a little over a month and non-stop issues. Was in the shop for 10 days and supposedly resolved the issues, but only 2 of the 4 issues resolved, but the 2 biggest issues still remain. We are losing 30% more charge in less then 100 miles of freeway only driving, flat terrain. We drove 45 miles the first day after the supposed repairs and used 72. The next day we drove 60 miles and used 92 miles. Service and follow through is the worst I have ever experienced. First texting, then long waits to no avail on the toll free line. Press 1 for a call back and of course no call backs. Very, very disappointed in this purchase and would not recommend buying one to anyone. "Having the R1S infotainment screen die on my wife on the way to a doctors appointment with one of our kids is an annoyance. Having it die completely in the parking lot after the appointment as my son, who is contemplating surgery for an injury, had to figure out how to hard reboot and hope to get it working completely shook her confidence in the vehicle. We've had it three months and have 2 years and nine months to go, not sure if or when she'll feel comfortable driving it again. In the fifth model year this shouldn't be a thing. "CR is a paid marketing rag. With that being said, not shocked that Rivian made it on their radar. My suspension sounds like its about to blown up, way too many software bugs, Paak rarely works, door handles groan when opening, gear tunnel door fails to fully latch. 2025 gen2 and the service center says there is nothing they can do.
