Buyer brief · 301 words

The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD Pro S packs 295 hp, 245 miles of EPA range and a 77 kWh battery, and the score gets it into the conversation; battery and service records decide whether to make an offer.

Score read

A 64/100 makes this a paperwork-and-test-drive decision. Software and driver-assist score is 82/100, but range and efficiency score is only 37/100. Owners on Reddit repeatedly cite software tech and owner satisfaction as recurring problems. Treat missing repair records as a price problem, not a footnote.

Price context

Bring your own comps Pull current comps before negotiating

This trim started from $49,410 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (37/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

  • Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.

Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 245-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

On [XXX], my 2022 Volkswagen I.D. 4 burst into flames and exploded while it was parked in my apartment complex parking structure ([XXX] ). My car was completely engulfed in flames, nearby cars as well as the parking structure experienced heat damage. My life and others were put in danger because even though my car was electric, it was parked in a resident garage near other cars who are gas operated, which could have caused an even more catastrophic damage if the fire would've spread more. Dallas Fire Department was present, and a fire report was conducted (Incident number #[XXX]). As of today, the vehicle has only been inspected by the Dallas Fire department, as well as a virtual video meeting with my insurance agent from Allstate. Before the incident the car charged normally, was operating normally and there was no indication or warning signs to indicate that there were any issues that would have caused this. I was parking the car in a parking lot. I turned left into the lot and then turned right into a spot and then decided to switch to the adjacent spot (also requiring me to turn right) to provide me with more room to park and leave the car. As I turned into the spot the car suddenly accelerated forward. I tried pushing the brakes and the car continued to accelerate and hit two fences. No indication of a collision by car, no engagement of the automatic emergency braking. No recognition of the car that there was a fence in front. No automatic braking/warning lamps. The vehicle was inspected only by the insurance agent and body shop for repair.

Subject: Request for Investigation and Recall – Door Handle Failure on Volkswagen Vehicle Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am writing to formally request an investigation and potential recall concerning a serious safety issue with my 2022 ID.4 AWD Pro S Volkswagen vehicle. The problem involves the door handles failing to open from either the inside or outside of the vehicle. I can provide video evidence showing that, while the vehicle is fully unlocked, with no child safety mechanisms engaged and my foot on the brake at a complete stop, the doors cannot be opened from either the front or rear seats. This issue occurs repeatedly—approximately four to five times per week—and has become more frequent since the “919” recall was performed on the vehicle. Despite this, the dealership has stated that the issue is a “non-issue,” claiming that other vehicles of the same model exhibit similar behavior. The inability to open a vehicle door in normal operating conditions is a serious safety concern that could endanger occupants in an emergency situation. Volkswagen’s response minimizes a clear risk to consumer safety. If the software controlling door operation cannot be relied upon to perform such a critical function, it should be removed or replaced with a mechanical mechanism that guarantees the ability to open the door at all times. I respectfully request that the NHTSA investigate this matter and determine whether a recall or corrective action is warranted. Thank you for your attention to this important safety concern. Please let me know if additional documentation or video evidence would be helpful to your investigation. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S AWD [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

1. I still can't make sense of what exactly malfunctioned at my car accident on 9/26/2025 but I have reported to the Volkswagen Customer Service on 9/27/2025 and they couldn't give me a precise answer and told me they will have to research and call me back yesterday - 9/30/2025 but I haven't got a call as of this writing. It basically activated something that accelerated suddenly the car and it is like someone took control over the car causing me to crash with 2 cars in front of me. Yes, it is available for inspection. 2. I don't feel safe anymore with that car and also I am terrified that innocent people's lives will be put at risk. 3. I have seen some articles around the internet with the same experience that I had and it looks like Volkswagen has a law suit about it. 4. No, but I have reported to 911 and my insurance. 5. No, there's no any warning on the car dashboard before this incident happened.

[XXX] [XXX] September 14, 2025 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE Washington, DC 20590 Subject: Formal Complaint – Safety Defect in 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 (Power Steering and Brake Failure) Dear Sir or Madam, I am submitting this formal complaint regarding a serious safety defect in my 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, which resulted in a crash and a minor injury to my wife. This defect poses a substantial risk of death or serious injury to the driving public. On [XXX], my wife experienced sudden unintended acceleration, followed immediately by complete loss of braking and steering control. She was unable to avoid leaving the roadway and entered a ditch, sustaining a minor injury. The vehicle suffered fender damage. The vehicle was towed to our authorized Volkswagen dealership. The dealership’s technician documented that the power steering module failed. However, Volkswagen of America subsequently dispatched an engineer, who instructed the dealer not to communicate further with us. Volkswagen headquarters later claimed the power steering module failed only because the vehicle entered the ditch—an explanation directly at odds with the technician’s report and a witness account. Volkswagen has refused to accept responsibility, declined to cover medical or repair costs, and denied replacement of the failed power steering module. Our insurance provider also declined coverage, determining that the accident was caused by a mechanical failure. Legal and Regulatory References 1.49 U.S.C. § 30118 – Motor Vehicle Safety Act Requires manufacturers to notify NHTSA and vehicle owners when they determine a motor vehicle contains a defect related to motor vehicle safety. The failure of the power steering and braking systems clearly qualifies as a “safety-related defect” because it directly compromises steering and stopping ability. 2.49 C.F.R. I am writing to report two concerning safety issues with my vehicle: Repeated Door Clicking During Car Wash: On multiple occasions while driving through an automatic car wash, I have noticed that the car doors repeatedly click, as if attempting to unlock or open. This erratic behavior occurs despite no input from the driver or passengers, raising concerns about the vehicle’s electrical system and its reliability under normal operating conditions. Speedometer Malfunction: More critically, the instrument panel, including the speedometer, has gone completely black while driving. The panel remains non-functional for 5-10 minutes before rebooting on its own, leaving me unable to see my speed or other critical driving information during this period. This issue poses a significant risk to my safety as well as the safety of others on the road. Both issues are unpredictable and have occurred multiple times, making the vehicle unsafe under certain conditions. I kindly request your assistance in investigating these problems to make sure that no further safety hazards arise.

Vehicle suffers from unintended and sudden acceleration when the "resume' capacitive touch button is accidentally brushed against. The vehicle is subject to injure or kill the vehicles occupants or others struck by the vehicle. Vehicle advised there is "no issue" with the vehicle but they did acknowledge the problem with the design of the steering wheel. The issue is intermittent and has occurred while driving at slow speeds in parking lots when the steering wheel is frequently turned more than 90 degrees and a body part can unintentionally touch the 'Resume" button.

This is a repetitive intermittent issue. The ACC will engage without any command to do so. I have been to the dealer several times, but they have not been able to duplicate the issue. Because I never know when this will occur, I drive with caution. When I realize this is happening, of course I brake, and the ACC disengages as it should. These incidents are somewhat hazardous, as I am expecting to slow down, and I don't. I am certain that I do NOT in any way engage the ACC or press the "set" button on my steering wheel.

The car has now 3 times over the last year suddenly lurched forward while braking and pulling into a parking spot. The first time it went over a curb and into a yard. We thought it could be a mistake, but my wife, driving, has never had an accident in 40 years driving. Happened again, and we thought maybe it had something to do with cruise control and hepatic sensitive buttons. But we keep that system off unless we are on the highway. This time it lurched forward but she managed to get it to stop just as it touched the parked car in front. No damage. Foot was on the brake as coming to a stop. This car should not be allowed on the road.

When I was driving, I stopped at a traffic light. When the light turned green and I pressed the accelerator, many warning lights turned on and the vehicle did not go forward. After about 15 minutes, I was able to turn off the car and restart it again and move forward. At the next red light, the same problem happened again. After another 15 minutes, I was able to again turn off the car and restart it to get to a parking lot, where it had to be towed to the dealership for service. This was a safety concern because I was stuck in traffic as other cars were in motion around me during morning rush hour. I had to get out of my car to turn it off and back on from my key fob. VW diagnosed the problem as a broken motor. Since my car is electric, it does not have an engine, so the motor is in place of the engine. This happened Sept 6, 2023. VW has still not fixed the car. I tried to upload the "pre-work order" from the service department, which is all I have since the repair invoice is not complete yet, but the upload function on this website is not working for me. I am reporting this in case it is not an isolated incident; if this is not just a lemon of a vehicle, then I am concerned for the safety of other drivers and passengers.

Further, holding down the on-off power switch by the steering column or the on-off switch in the main display greater than 10 secs when the car was parked did not reboot or perform a soft reset of the display system.

Two days ago I was pulling into a parking spot in a shopping center. The car suddenly accelerated forward and I hit a concrete parking block. This is the third time over the past 7 months that this has occurred, where the car suddenly accelerates when in a low speed. After the first time it happened, I called the dealership to ask if any other customers had this issue, but they said no. For them to run a diagnostic on it, they would have to recreate what had occurred. We all know that is impossible. So I ignored it, as it did not happen again until three months later. I was slowly pulling into a parking space at the beach. Pulling into the space the car accelerated, fast. It crashed in to the two cement barriers at front of parking space. I heard the air hissing out of the right front passenger tire, as it deflated. The front of the car was badly damaged from the crash into the barriers. Luckily no one was injured or killed. This is the second acceleration problem we have experiencd. In May I had a deacceleration issue with this car. I was crossing traffic and when I pressed on the accelerator, it very slowly moved, not letting me accelerate. I was worried about the on coming traffic hitting me, but luckily they just honked and went around. Moments later Iaccelerated and the car worked normally again. We took it to the VW shop and they said they didn't find anything. That they "reset it". It had worked normally until today. The system that malfunctioned was the speed control. My safety and anyone around me was put at risk, by having a car accelerating when I didn't want it to. It's a Sunday, so don't know dealers response yet. Contacted insurance, police and will contact VW on Monday. No warning messages.

In July 2023, the airbag light came on in the dash of the vehicle. Upon inspection by the VW dealer, Sheppard Motors, the dealership indicated that the airbag module failed. They said the repair part was back ordered and were not sure when it will be available. I asked them does this mean the airbag system will not work in an accident? They said yes. I suggested pulling an airbag module from one of the cars in their inventory and using it to repair the car. They said no. They left us drive the car away with the airbag light still on. I researched on the internet finding a airbag module for the car. I informed them of the research and website. They said they called the other VW dealer but the part was not available even though the part was showing as available on the website. I believe driving a vehicle without a functioning airbag system is very dangerous. I don't understand why the manufacture does not have parts available for a new car. I think the safety board needs to investigate this parts availability problem and airbag module failure. How can the vehicle have such a great safety rating if the airbag system does not work?

After using adaptive cruise control, driver pulled into a spot to pick up a pizza. Car was parked then lurched forward without pedal input, jumping over parking parking block and then crashed through front window of a store. Took out retaining wall and came to a stop at the back wall. Thankfully no one was injured. Police report was filed and manufacturer was alerted who interrogated the vehicle but claimed nothing found to be wrong. Vehicle was totaled and damages were paid. A number of other similar incidents have been reported with this vehicle so we felt it necessary to alert.

I have experienced within 3 months two incidents of unattended, out of control acceleration when pulling into a parking spot. First I drove into some bushes, at the second incident I drove over a sidewalk almost into a building. It was very scary. I found in the internet another person who has experienced the same thing. https://www.vwidtalk.com/threads/sudden-acceleration.6037/ I have not contacted the dealer yet. I cannot reproduce it. I am very sure I did not step on the accelerator.

The driver's door latch stopped working intermittently and then totally, so that to get to the driver's seat required entering from the passenger door. The dealer documented the issue January 24, 2023 but was unable to offer a solution or replacement because the part was backordered indefinitely. Subsequently the door latch began tumbling at random intervals while I was driving. Then it started unlatching while the car was stationary. Then it started unlatching while in motion when both my hands were on the steering wheel. On March 2, 2023 VW agreed to tow the car to the dealer since it agreed it was unsafe to drive. The car has been at the dealer ever since.

When pressing on the brake pedal while while the car is using ACC and slowing down for traffic ahead the car lessons the amount of regenerative braking applied. This dangerous situation occurs whenever added breaking is needed for slowing traffic beyond what the car is automatically applying for ACC. The reduction in vehicle breaking when depressing the pedal makes a collision more likely, and makes the car feel like it's lurching forward.

My driver’s side door has had several odd behaviors. Initially, the door handle wouldn’t open the door when opening from the outside. This behavior is inconsistent. Sometimes the handle works from the outside, sometimes it doesn’t. After the behavior with the door handle started, I also had the door occasionally open itself while I was in the car. This tended to happen while stopped. It has happened once while I was driving slowly, repeatedly opening and closing the door to see if it wouldn’t stop opening itself (this one time the behavior was particularly stubborn). I door the car to the dealership when the door handle behavior started. They ordered a part and are supposed to get back to me.

2/14/23, Longmont Colorado snow storm roads snowcovered. Vehicle in Traction mode, all wheel drive. Exiting an inclined parking lot cars rear end started sliding to left, gently accelerated to correct. Yellow caution lights illuminated for all systems. No advanced driver assistance systems were working. Car was extremely difficult to drive, braking was severely restricted as was acceleration and cornering. I believe the computer system was overloaded, “confused” and shut down. I honestly don’t believe that I could have controlled the vehicle had I been driving any Colorado mountain pass. Managed to drive approximately 3 miles to home, but it was a scary experience. Facebook groups for ID-4, reported that when the computer crashes, to stop car, exit, lock and step away at least 50 feet for 5 minutes to reset. Not practical in a mountain blizzard! It was quite a surprise, as we have taken to snow covered Fair Grounds parking lot to determine how the car accelerates, brakes and turns in snow. Did donuts and figure eights and the computer never freaked out. I was not able to photograph cockpit screen because of conditions. Once key 50 feet away for 5 minutes it reset, again not very practical during a snowstorm had I been on Vail pass.

Was backing into my driveway and the brake pedal went hard and almost backed in to my garage. All kinds of warning starting popping on and a message appeared "Brake Booster is Limited". I only stopped the vehicle by pressing really hard but since I was already moving slow the vehicle came to a stop. If I would have been driving in regular traffic I would have never ben able to stop. Many system lights also came on and the vehicle is not drivable and I will have to get it towed to VW. The vehicle is only a month old with 1200 miles on it.

I brought my car to the Volkswagen garage because there was a problem with the software, mainly the GPS was off. The location shown was 1 mile away. After 10 days in the garage, I asked if I could take it back and the case remained open because the problem was not resolved. I was pulling back my car in front of the house to unload groceries and it did not stop, damaged the garage door. Several people complained about this problem on the web, when the car is in reverse, and it seems that a software update can fix it.

My 2022 VW ID.4 Pro S has experienced a total failure of the GPS and telematics system (J949 module), causing a dangerous 'GPS Drift' where the vehicle reports its location miles away from its actual position. This creates two severe safety hazards: Automated System Malfunction: The Travel Assist and Dynamic Road Sign systems are receiving conflicting data. The camera correctly identifies a speed limit (e.g., 40 mph), but the faulty GPS overrides it with incorrect map data (e.g., 25 mph). This causes the vehicle to unexpectedly and dangerously decelerate while in active traffic. Emergency Service Failure: The eCall (Emergency Call) system is reporting the wrong location. In the event of a serious crash, emergency responders would be directed to a location miles away from the actual accident site. My dealer provided written documentation (attached) stating there is 'NO FIX' currently for 2021-2023 models, as they are hardware-locked to a failing Verizon-based data protocol that VW has not patched. The manufacturer has acknowledged the defect but offers no remedy for this safety-critical system.

Electrical gremlins present at time of purchase (3/14/2025). Entered service and repair on 3/17/2025 and remained for 30-45 days. Upon coming to retrieve vehicle electrical malfunctions still present upon entering vehicle in the service bay, alerted advisor. Car was checked back into service immediately and remained for 60-90 days. Between March and December I have had continuous electrical gremlins present from Dashboard and display malfunction, interior lights malfunction, trunk/doors/locks/windows malfunction to no end and no repair in sight. This specific vehicle is a lemon and riddled with irreparable electrical gremlins, it has cost me significant income loss and loss of faith in the reliability of Volkswagen brand that I love so much.

I understand Tesla started this trend of reducing horsepower based on the car's State Of Charge; however, there's times when having access to full horsepower can help collisions, especially rear end collisions. My car gets full horsepower when it's SOC is at 90-100%. Then is gets less as the SOC gets lower. It should get 100% horsepower regardless of SOC when stepping down on the pedal 100% to where I can fell a switch is being pressed. At freeway on ramps when I'm trying to merge, when my car's SOCis at 30%, it drives slower than at 80% and more obvious at 100%.

When my car starts in ECO mode, meaning ECO mode was the last setting on my last drive, the car appears to drive in ECO mode given the pedal's delay in power; however, on freeways, it can easily go pass 80mph, which it isn't supposed to. Then when I change my car mode to any other mode after starting my car in ECO mode, so Comfort, Sport, etc, and then switching back to ECO mode, I noticed the pedal now has more resistance then it did before. It feels like now, it's 100% ECO mode because I get way better efficiency now. For example, yesterday, when I drove to work and my car started up on ECO mode, it took 6% to get to work. Today, after starting up my car when it is already in ECO mode from the last drive, then switching to comfort or sport mode, then back to ECO mode, it took 4% to get to work. Both drives are on the same road, same speed limit and AC set at 70F for the entire drive for both days.

I purchased this vehicle on [XXX] from Sunnyvale Volkswagen and have experienced ongoing issues with the electrical system, infotainment, safety features, and OTA software updates. In early 2023, all error lights came on while driving, followed by a complete electrical system failure. The car would not restart until the next day. In 2024 and again in 2025, the center screen went completely black, disabling the rearview camera, hands-free navigation, climate control, and car settings. Restart attempts failed. On Feb 26, 2025, I accepted an OTA software update, which failed. I tried again on Feb 27. When I returned to the car later that day, the update was still running. The next day, the car would not unlock with either key. I tried the manual key over an hour and hundred times, which eventually worked, but the keys still weren’t recognized. I replaced both key batteries with new ones from the store (one key was spare hence never used), but the issue persisted. After several days of the same issue and hours of failed attempts, I was finally able to start the car and drive it to Sunnyvale VW on March 3rd. They acknowledged the issue and replaced both key batteries again with OEM ones, which temporarily resolved the problem. On March 25, I was contacted by Stevens Creek Volkswagen to address two recall campaigns needing VIN-specific checks. I scheduled an appointment for March 31 at 9am and called on March 30 to confirm. Despite the confirmation and their having a note for a loaner from the manager, I was told upon arrival—after waiting 15 minutes—that parts were unavailable and they couldn’t perform the repairs. I was told I’d be contacted when parts arrive, the same excuse I’ve heard since the recall opened a year ago. My safety recall remains unresolved. This vehicle has proven unreliable and unsafe for my family. I am requesting a full replacement of this lemon with a brand-new vehicle as soon as possible. I use this car for work daily, see patients in their homes. The driver door won’t locked, for 2 consecutive days and this is not the first time incident. Whenever this happens, I notify the dealer but they said VW does not have repair/solution to it yet. So, the car’s safety features (emergency braking, lane departure assist, adaptive cruise control and etc) are not functional. This makes it dangerous for us/drivers. Because the door is unlocked and car is running, it sends signals/sounds warning the door is unlocked. It is terrifying driving the car while it’s raining. I am unsure if the car will suddenly stop. Also, the anti-fog doesn’t work unless I turn on the heater which reduces my mileage. I can barely see the road when it’s pouring rain. The car doesn’t charge to its usual 200 miles at 80% (recommended), only charging 180 miles at 90%. Hope you can help me please as I am the bread winner in the family. We do not have extra budget to get another car. Our old 2010 Prius is only good in town, not in major highways. If something happens to me due to this car’s manufacturing faults, my husband and child will be left destitute and end up homeless. Thank you for your assistance.

The dealership has not been able to complete the repair and the car has been at the dealership for almost three months. I was turning into a parking spot in front of the entry doors to a Sheetz convenience store. I was slowing down, and had gotten halfway into the space. All of a sudden, the car surged forward, went over the curb and hit the bollard in front of the parking space. It was hit with such force that the bollard bent and went under our car. My memory is that I was pressing on the brake very hard, once the acceleration started. My husband was in the car with me and can attest to all that I have stated. If that bollard had not been there, and stopped my car, I feel certain that my car would have crashed into the store, seriously injuring (or killing) us and those inside the store. We are planning to report the accident to Volkswagen, and to request that they test the "black box" inside the car, to see if they can find out what went wrong. I have spoken to someone in the Sheetz corporate office, and she told me that they have a video recording of the event. She said she observed my car entering the parking space very slowly, and that the car suddenly accelerated. She is planning to provide that video to State Farm Insurance, our insurance company. Unfortunately, I did not take pictures, myself, of the damage to the front of the car. But we will be requesting that the collision repair shop take pictures before the car gets dismantled for repair. We do not recall hearing any warning signals of the impending crash, and certainly did not experience any emergency braking. The airbags did not deploy.

While exiting/entering from one highway to another, I was slowing down vehicle in curved ramp area to approximately 35mph from 65mph. The car's driver display (a warning banner) indicated that I had insufficient battery and that I should stop the vehicle. The battery was at 65%. I coasted vehicle to right shoulder of road. Steering was difficult. This area of highway access was under construction and I had a very limited space to stop car. The car then lost drive and stopped. Although I was in a narrow shoulder area, there were cars traveling behind me in ramp area. I put on hazard lights as a warning of my stopped vehicle so I would avoid getting hit. I waited 1 minute to re-start vehicle. Car re-started without faults or warning indicators and I was able to travel home.

"The used ones are a freaking steal right now once you factor in the $4k tax rebate and VW improved the certified warranty on electrics to 3/36k. I have a 2021 Pro S AWD w/Gradient and we are looking to actually trade a 2023 Taos SE 4Motion in for a 2022 Pro S AWD w/Gradient. I have had mine for 3 years \~25k miles and it is right at 4 years old with 40k on the clock. Pleased as punch with it, it was a little sketch at first with the original 2.1 software but the updates took care of the troubles there. I had a similar \~6k annual mileage use case like you where it was just a short commute to/from work then weekend runabout. That drastically changed and am now pushing \~30k miles annually, it is great for both short and long distance commuting. Comfort is superb on the freeway and Travel Assist makes the highway commuting a breeze. With your 6k annual you might need to charge 1x per week, when I had that similar annual mileage it was legit 1x per week - charge to 80% then run it down to 30% or so until the following week. Now I will say coming from a GTI don't believe the old commercial with Tanner Foust (see below) saying the ID.4 handles more like a hot hatch, it drives heavy because it is heavy. Very competent handling but hot hatch it definitely is not. Old ID.4 commercial"
