The 2021 Audi e-tron Sportback is rated at 218 miles of EPA range, 150 kW fast charging and a 87 kWh battery, and 10 recalls on this make/year mean the seller has to show completed paperwork on the exact VIN.
Score read
A 58/100 makes this a high-risk buy. The useful split is software and driver-assist score at 83/100 versus range and efficiency score at 34/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: range and software tech. If the seller cannot show recall completion, price that risk or move on.
Price context
This trim started from $69,100 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.
Who this is for
✓ Good for
- ⏱ Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging
✗ Avoid if you are a
- ☷ Family hauler 3+ kids, cargo, towing
- ↦ Road tripper Long trips, needs DC fast network
- $ Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation
Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (34/100).
Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.
- Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.
Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 218-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

Source & disclaimer
Dealers make ~$7,460 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 24 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

On five separate occasions across two separate drivers, we have experienced a partial brake failure in this vehicle. We strongly believe this to be a software defect and not a mechanical fault. On the e-Tron, the first portion of the brake pedal swing typically activates the regenerative braking. About mid-way through pressing the pedal, it changes to "real" mechanical brakes. When this brake failure occurs, we get to that midway point and the car lets off the regenerative braking but does NOT apply the mechanical brakes, so the end result is that the more you press the brake pedal, the less it works. Three of these five occasions occurred in one day, so by the time the third time came around, I was really paying attention and I'm very confident this wasn't driver error. In at least one case, the only reason that a crash was avoided is because the automatic braking / forward collision system activated. The vehicle has been inspected by a dealer, who found "No Repairs Recommended". We requested an update to the ABS module software, as this software update is known to resolve multiple other problems with the braking system (see TSBs 2072977, 2061906) but we were denied the update.

Car turns on but won’t move. Take it to dealership as it happens for the second time and turns out the brakes are sticking to the rotors. Audi says it’s perfectly normal just put force to the accelerator. When you do that in fact, it sound like the car is about to split in half. Dangerous as they could stick while driving anywhere. Scared for my life in the car.

The vehicle's central locking system does not properly communicate with the keyfob resulting in the doors not unlocking as intended. I have had my child in the car seat in the back and if i accidentantly touch the handle the wrong way the doors will lock and I am unable to use the unlock feature to get my kid out. This could be a serious safety issue if someone becomes trapped in the rear seat and the central locking system does not allow unlocking of the doors.

My Audi E-tron has a consistant problem with the MMI (Multi Media Interface, the main computer for the car). When I am driving, all the screens will go blank, I cannot see my speed, I have no HVAC controls, I am basically driving blind. To fix the issue, I have to pull over, turn off the ignition, open the driver door, close the driver door, put my foot on the brake, start the car again. Sometimes this happens in the first few minutes of driving, othertimes it happens when I am on the highway which poses a huge safety risk. This saftey issue has presented itself at least 5 times in the last 12 months. I have told Audi about this issue several times and they completely deny it exists. This is my 3rd Audi in 15 years and like every other Audi issue I have had, Audi will completely deny there is a problem until there is a recall forced on the company. It happened with the brakes of my last 2017 q7 and Audi kept telling me there was no issue, it finally got settled with a recall on the vehicle. The MMI has been an issue on this car since day 1. The MMI shutting off and putting everyones lives at risk has been going on for the last 12-18 months.

This issue occurred with my Audi a year after purchasing it and the vehicle had 19,282 miles on it at the time. I received an "Electrical System Malfunction - Please contact service" error message (in yellow) on my 2021 Audi etron vehicle display. The message was displayed for a few minutes as I was traveling home from work and then disappeared. The following day, I was on my commute into work on the highway, traveling 70 mph, and received an "Electrical System Malfunction - Safety stop vehicle" error message. The vehicle immediately started displaying other error messages and the motor turned off, while the vehicle was in motion. Luckily, I was able to move to the shoulder of the highway safely. The experience was frightening as I was traveling 70 mph and experienced a complete vehicle shut down with little to no warning. The Audi etron had to be towed to the dealership to be repaired. The dealership had my vehicle for 3.5 weeks while they repaired the car. They inspected the vehicle and determined it was a front motor failure and it had to be replaced. I am extremely concerned about the safety issues the Audi etron has created for me and others, especially given that it is a newer vehicle with low mileage.

Twice in the span of 3 months my 2021 Audi eTron with less than 25K miles shutdown while driving with an error message "Electrical system: malfunction! Safely stop vehicle." At this point the drive train is completely disengaged and all that can be done is coast to a stop with limited ability to steer or control the vehicle. The vehicle must then be towed to a dealership. If this had happened on a busy multi-lane highway, there is a high probability of an accident occurring putting occupants of the car and other cars at risk. In both cases there was no prior warning of any problem with the vehicle. The first repair in July required Audi to replace the master controller located in the battery pack and replace the front engine due to a fluid leak. This took 6+ weeks to complete. I had the car back 5 weeks after the first repair when it happened again. I am still waiting diagnosis on second repair.

Repeated sudden loss of forward propulsion power associated with multiple warning messages about drive system and electrical system malfunction. Because the problem is sudden and the car has no forward propulsion power the car is left blocking traffic with occupants still inside. This has occurred multiple times over the last 6 months and no cause has been identified yet.

CHARGEPOINT, INC manufacturers defective electric motor vehicle chargers for residential use. Chargepoint's initially worked upon delivery and installation by a certified/license electrician. However, after several months the charger became defective and was replaced by Chargepoint with another identical charger. The second charger did not work upon arrival despite customer service assistance. Chargepoint refused to refund me the cost of purchase and replacement. Chargepoint would like to have the defective chargers returned without reimbursement of all expenses.

While on the highway, the car threw the following error message: "Electrical system: malfunction! Safely stop vehicle" I was able to drive for a mile or so to pull into a residential street and at that point, the vehicle just wouldn't move. It was essentially stalled, and I had to call roadside assistance to have it towed. After a few days, I receive an update from the dealer that the motor needs to be replaced - this car has done like 19,000 miles and the motor has apparently died abruptly. On further research, I noticed that there have been other etron owners that have had to deal with similar issues, often happening abruptly and while their car was in use. I'm glad that I was able to pull over to safety and there was no other serious injury - this could have ended very differently.

My vehicle has 13,090 miles on it. I have had two electrical issues that affected the A/C button not working on the panel display, which were both fixed by the dealership. Last week, after dropping my children off at school, a warning sign came on my display that said "Electrical system malfunction - Safely Stop the Vehicle." I wasn't in a spot to stop the vehicle safely so I started to drive to a parking lot where I could. While trying to take off at an intersection after the red light turned green, the car completely stopped with the nose of my car sticking out into the crosswalk/intersection. The accelerator would not respond and I could not move. I had to ask some people standing by to help me push my car off into a parking lot where I had the vehicle towed to the dealership. After being at the dealership for 6 days, they let me know that it has been verified that a motor is going to need to be replaced and they put an order in for it. They said they aren't sure on when the vehicle will be ready for me to pick it up.

E-Tron with 9300 miles, received Electrical Malfunction: Contact Service. Audi service said to bring vehicle in. On way to dealer, warning changed to Electrical Malfunction: Pull over safely and then, before being able to do so, the vehicle jerked and died while in traffic. Fortunately, I had decided not to take the freeway and had enough momentum to coast to the side of the road, but the experience certainly stressed my nerves, especially since I could have chosen to be on the freeway in heavy, fast, multilane traffic. Dealer said it was a coolant leak into the front motor which killed the electrical motor. Subsequently discovered from research this has been happening since the 2019 model year in E-trons, and is likely related to a faulty gasket. I have not received my car back from repair so cannot yet confirm that this was the cause in my case. But a properly designed electric vehicle should not allow coolant to get into an electrical motor. Having a vehicle stop in traffic is a definite safety risk. In addition, I don’t know if Audi has redesigned the faulty parts to prevent this from reoccurring.

Had multiple instances as I approached intersection stops of the vehicle suddenly jerking and the drive train becoming disengaged. The car maintained electrical power and had working steering and braking as I coasted to a stop. This occurred 5 times over the course of 3 miles as I attempted to make my way home, and I would estimate that each occurrence happened at a speed under 10 mph. The car was near full battery charge level when this occurred. With each occurrence, the vehicle would generate a series of warning messages (indicating failures of one system after another, ranging from electrical system, to drive train, to collision avoidance, to tire pressure monitor, etc.) and would indicate the car was disabled, should be pulled over safely, and that I should call the dealer for support. For about 30 seconds, the car could not be put back into "drive" mode, but after that time I could restart the car and was able to resume driving. Fortunately, this all occurred when I was driving on neighborhood streets during a non-busy period, and I was able to carefully make my way back home. But having a car suddenly and randomly disabled while in motion could obviously be a significant safety issue. The following day I had the car towed to my local Audi dealer and at this point have received no indication of what the problem might be or even when it might be assigned to a technician for diagnosis. In looking online at Audi owner forums, it's clear that others have experienced the same problem I experienced, along with an array of other significant electrical failures. I've spoken to the Audi Customer Experience support desk and they say the problem I experienced is not one they've been made aware of.

Vehicle traveling when electrical systems malfunction message came on. Said pull over safely and call for service. After car was slowed to a stop, the vehicle was disabled with no forward or reverse drive possible. The car was stranded close to the middle right of the street. Car had to be towed to the nearest dealership around midnight. Problem has been confirmed with the dealer and they are still looking into the problem. Prior warnings messages of headlamp malfunction, Audi emergency assist unavailable, high beam headlight faulty were present about a month prior but did not disable the vehicle.

While operating the vehicle the air conditioning system failed. The vehicle was brought to dealer for diagnosis which confirmed the failure and was out of service for 30 days due to parts availability being SOP. The dealer provided a loaner and fuel reimbursement due my car being electric but refused to reimburse the lease payment for the 30 days out of service. The parts replaced were 4M0-959-609 SENSOR, 87571950 HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH & REFRIGERANT.

While I was on vacation a couple states away, I drove the Audi Etron Sportback for the first time since three days before when I drove to the vacation destination. After several minutes driving I got an "ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION - PLEASE CONTACT SERVICE" notification. Several minutes later I got very large red alert that said "ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION - STOP VEHICLE". I immediately pulled over to the side of the road into a parking lot just before the electric motors shut down completely. This put myself and my dog in danger. Car was towed to local Audi Dealership and they informed me that coolant had infiltrated the front motor and needed to be replaced. Then other hoses and parts had to be replaced. I am at 4 weeks without my vehicle. The car had 9800 miles on it and was roughly 9.5 months old. Upon searching the internet, there's MANY complaints of coolant infiltrating the motors after a long road trip or after many miles. This kills the motor and some owners report horror stories of having no electrical power in the middle of traffic and in the middle of streets. This is apparent that it is a not a stray issue - but it is a routine issue with the Audi Etron Sportback. And with two motors, and each one costing about $15,000 each - it is likely a very serious and expensive problem that Audi doesn't want to be known. Loss of drive ability (along with other systems) in an EV in traffic or highways is an extremely dangerous and terrible activity, especially for first responders and hazard workers that assist an owner in a vehicle that is very difficult to move when in this state.

VEHICLE SHUTS OFF AND SLAMS INTO PARK WHEN DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS. VEHICLE WILL THEN REFUSE TO RESTART FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS AND I AM UNABLE MOVE THE VEHICLE FROM PARK. THIS ISSUE ONLY OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN CHARGING OVERNIGHT, AND HAS NOT OCCURRED IF THE VEHICLE HASN'T BEEN RECENTLY CHARGED. VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALER WHICH STATED IT WAS WORKING AS DESIGNED. THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES.

All of Audi e-tron models do not have AM radio. You are not told of this during sales and in fact the dealer sales rep and service manager did not know this until they came to the car to show me how to turn it on. I consider this feature (AM Radio) a standard for over 50 years and is a safety measure as road side signs direct you to tune to AM radio for traffic or road conditions ahead. I think this deceptive absence of a standard tool should warrant a national recall.

"I just took this exact plunge 3 weeks ago after having my 2014 A6 TDI for 12 years (which I kept), and I couldn't be happier. I got a certified pre-owned 2025 Q6 Prestige for my daily commute, to replace the drive I was making with my 2014 Tacoma, since my wife uses my A6 as HER commuter. (*Sob*) 3-My Q6 has the latest software update (KD2), which has let me avoid most of the software problems people have complained about. I have one minor problem with Audi Connect Plus in that everything but streaming apps works, but I can get around that by having the car connect to my phone hotspot, instead. So, technically, I don't even need plus. 1-The drive, well, it drives like an Audi. If you like how the Q5 drives, you'll be happy with the Q6. I recently nearly had a head-on collision with it when an oncoming car swerved into my lane right in front of me, and I had to do an emergency swerve at 60mph with VERY limited space at 60mph, and the car threaded the needle like a champ. Between me, it's steering assist and stopping assist, I didn't even feel close to losing control. It let me clear a gap in which I had, without exaggerating, a foot and a half of total clearance between the car an"
"Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party here. I came from a 2012 Q5 S-Line (over 140K miles) to a SQ6 Prestige last fall. Here are my answers. 1. Absolutely wonderful. Air suspension makes the ride very comfortable. The acceleration is effortless. The acoustic glass makes the environment much quieter. Of note, I test drove a Premium Plus (without the acoustic glass) and the Prestige on the same day, and could definitely tell a difference. 2. For charging at home, it is great as it has AC charging ports on both sides. The onboard charger is not the fastest (tops at 39A), but more than enough for my charging habits. For DC charging, the DC port is on the back left corner, so it is well placed for working with Tesla and most other chargers without having to do any weird parking maneuvers. Plug-and-charge only works with Electrify America, but if you use them it is effortless as you just plug in and watch it start charging. 3. There are quirks, and the car does have some personality. A percentage of people have had serious issues, but a majority have been OK. I've had one problem that required a reset of one of the computers, which I did by pulling a fuse. Others here have de"

"Lowest ever (but not bad) efficiency score I've just got my lowest ever efficiency score driving my 2022 Audi e-tron 55 on a long journey. I drove a total of 155 miles with a two-hour break at the mid point. (So 2 battery conditioning sessions) I started the journey on 97% battery, and when I got home I had 16% left. I drove at the speed limit everywhere, so in a 70 I was doing 70, 60 I was doing 60, etc. I drove in comfort mode with S power, with a fairly heavy right foot. It was night time the whole journey. I had my matrix LED lights on, heating at 23 degrees with the blower on 3, heated seats on for both front passengers, and we averaged an outside temperature of -2c. (It’s quite nippy in the UK currently🇬🇧) Oddly enough in the car it said I got 2.4, but in the app is and I got 2.3? Either way that’s 200 miles in the freezing cold, pitch black, Driving at 70mph in sport performance with comfort suspension, CarPlay and the music on , both heated seats on, temperature up high and so on. "Long trips and warranty question Ok group — my wife and I love our 2022 Audi e-tron, but a couple of recent trips have left us extremely frustrated with the charging infrastructure. This week we were in Providence for an event for our daughter (about 100 miles from home), so we stayed at a hotel with what appeared to be plenty of nearby charging options. That night, I tried to charge: • The station across the street near the State House was gated off. • The next closest station showed available, but it was out of order. I called it a night assuming I’d figure it out in the morning. The next morning, we went to the mall, which showed many available chargers. After multiple attempts and a lot of frustration, the Shell customer service rep told me they were all offline. Not great timing, since I was now down to about 25 miles of range. From there, I tried at least half a dozen more stations—either full or broken—before finally reaching an Electrify America location. Only 3 of 5 chargers were working, there was a long wait, and charging was very slow (about 80 kW on a 350 kW charger). I assume the \~10°F temps played a role. I eventually got enough charge and we were on our"
"Audi e-tron GT – Can’t start A/C remotely, constant “Vehicle status could not be retrieved” error Hey all, I’m having an ongoing issue with my Audi e-tron GT where I can’t start the climate control (A/C or heat) from the Audi app. This has been happening constantly, not just once or twice. Every time I try, I get this error in the app: “Vehicle status could not be retrieved – Error in vehicle communication” Error code: E:CV.PA.5 (260125191943) Some context: • Car is often plugged into a Level 2 charger • Issue happens regardless of temperature, but it’s especially frustrating in cold weather • Lock/unlock sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t • App shows seat heating and glass heating toggles, but climate won’t actually start • This is not a one-off glitch — it’s been happening repeatedly over a long period Things I’ve already tried: • Force-closing and reopening the Audi app • Logging out and back in • Restarting my phone • Locking/unlocking the car manually • Letting the car “sleep” for hours No consistent fix so far. Has anyone else seen this error code or had persistent remote climate failur"

"E-Tron recall 93PG I own a 2021 Audi E-Tron 50 Quattro with 55,000 miles. Last night, I charged it on a 7 kWh home charger with an 80% limit. After an hour, once charging was complete, I disconnected and drove to work. About 20 minutes later, a message appeared in the app. What's causing this? I know they perform HV updates, usually on 55-series models or when issues are detected. Is this service free or does it cost at Audi dealerships? I was told diagnostics cost £400, so I avoided it. I'm planning to replace the car either this year or early next year, so I'm hesitant to invest further. Has anyone experienced this situation?"
