Buyer brief · 305 words

The 2024 Rivian R1T All-Terrain Dual Large (20in) is rated at 665 hp, 307 miles of EPA range and a 129 kWh battery, and a mid-pack composite means the records-and-test-drive call matters more than the headline.

Score read

A 74/100 makes this worth pursuing if the price is sane. Owner feedback score is 81/100, but range and efficiency score is only 58/100. Reddit threads cluster around software tech and owner satisfaction — verify both against the service records. Treat missing repair records as a price problem, not a footnote.

This trim started from $75,000 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (58/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

  • Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.

Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 307-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

While traveling at highway speed on Interstate 95, the vehicle experienced a complete and sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle would not respond to the Vehicle Restart function. The driver was able to safely pull to the shoulder from the right lane. The vehicle was towed to a Rivian service center, where technicians identified a low-voltage event matching a known Rivian engineering investigation. Rivian confirmed no current repair exists and that engineering is actively working on software improvements. The vehicle was returned unrepaired after 13 days. Rivian also replaced the 12V battery under warranty at a prior service visit in July 2025 for a related electrical system defect. Two field service actions (FSAM-1507, FSAM-1794) have also been performed on this vehicle.

I believed my car had a problem with the seals of the windows allowing severe wind noise. After attempted repair the problem persisted and, on closer inspection, it became evident that the driver side door is mis-installed and crooked. Rivian attempted to reprair this and only made it worse. The amount of wind/road noise that is coming in now is as if the windows was open. The door frame vibrates and whistles at speed. The mobile tech doesn't feel this is repairable but Rivian won't take responsibility for it. They have denied my BBB claim and I am pursuing a lemon lawyer.

Rivian alerted me that there was a “service action” related to the hub, and while waiting for that appointment, the hub came loose while driving and began grinding against the brakes and went into full system shutdown. The truck needed to be towed and the hub and brakes needed to be replaced. The truck was undrivae while driving at highway speeds and could have crashed. When questioned, the service center reiterated that this was “not a recall” but simply a head up. The repairs were covered under warranty.

"2+ Years and 27,000 miles I have an early VIN R1T. After more than 2 years (March, 2022) and 27,000, I thought someone might wonder what long (ish) term ownership looks like. Put simply, the Rivian R1T is the best vehicle I have ever owned, driven or ridden in. That includes: BMW, Tesla, Bentley, Subaru, Honda, Toyota (180,000 miles on that one), Mercedes, and Ford. The R1T has gone on long west coast road trips to visit national and state parks. It has been overlanding through coastal mountains. We go to the mountains to ski. We trailer motorcycles to remote areas. One of my kids is a rower so we are constantly dealing with piles of wet and dirty crap. Pets and people are in and out a lot. Even with above average abuse, the interior remains immaculate. The gear tunnel is so practical and useful. I thought it was a gimmick at first, but is so much more. The seats are the most comfortable car seats especially on long drives. The general build quality continues to impress me. Oh and the truck is so much fun to drive and quick off the line. My only gripe is the charging pad and dirt trap in the console. That is a small price to pay for a vehicle I am happy to get in every day."

"A measly 1400 miles here but loving every minute of it! Came from a modified model 3 performance that was a ROCKET but the R1T beats it in almost every single way. No regrets selling the model 3 for this silver beast. Love love love this truck."

"6th leg. At end of trip arrived home with estimated 28 miles of range remaining, so didn’t stop and instead continued another 13 miles down the road, then turned around and drove back to burn off the last few miles and see what the vehicle would really do at close to zero. Received ‘Low Battery’ warning at 5 miles remaining and arrived at home with SOC at 1% and 1 estimated mile remaining. Per on-screen trip monitor: 315.4 miles; 6 hours 30 min. driving; average speed: 48 mph. YMMV So… in great weather, in flat elevation Florida: Estimated Range: 369 miles; Actual Range: 315 miles (85% of Rivian estimate) In the years since I first reserved my R1T, charging options have changed of course, and Rivian just recently opened the Daytona Beach RAN charger, which is right along our preferred route and maybe 2 min. off the interstate. And with Tesla chargers coming online for us, good choices will become even more plentiful. So I am happy there is now no reason to regularly tax the R1T's battery with 100% to zero charge cycles… we’ll just stop by the RAN for a quick fill up on the way up or back. But nice to know what is possible if needed. Hope this is helpful to others considering a Max Pack... even though the Max Pack is not the MAX Pack we all hoped for years ago."

"Real World Roadtrip Range: Audi E-Tron vs. Rivian R1T TAKEAWAY: * Can't decide between a Large vs. Max pack? **Get a large.** * Standard+ vs. Large? Unless you're driving to remote locations often, the **standard+** is good enough, especially once NACS opens for more peace of mind. * Only get a Max if you tow far and often. Nerd post: I'm the owner of an R1T (Quad Large 20") and a 2019 Audi E-Tron Prestige. I often visit family in Springfield, OR from Auburn, WA (south Seattle). This trip is 266 miles one way, requiring a charging stop for both vehicles. The max highway range for the Audi is about 190 miles. In the Rivian it's 250 to 270 miles depending on wind/weather (20" wheels on the Rivian). Due to the excellent charging curve of the Audi, its roadtrip capabilities are actually pretty great for a vehicle with such low max range. The Rivian however, has a more traditional charging curve. Because the I-5 corridor has very reliable and plentiful stations, I have no concern over charging stations being down. **The question is: which vehicle is best to drive for this roadtrip? Do I go with more range in the Rivian, or drive the Audi instead?** So I did some math charing at L3 stations (150 kWh+): * In 25 minutes I gain: * 140 miles in the Audi * 135 miles in the Rivian * In 35 minutes I gain: * 172 miles in the Audi * 176 miles in the Rivian * For a 90% battery charge (5-95%) it takes: * 45 minutes in the Audi (4.44 miles per minute) * 85 minutes in the Rivian (3.05 miles per minute) That was surprising to me. The numbers above are optimal for the Rivian when using a 350kWh capable station. A 150 kWh would add \~10 minutes total. ABRP says this 267 mile trip (current traffic and weather conditions) would take: * 4 hr 40 min in the Audi incl. a 29 minute charge * 4 hr 30 min in the Rivian incl. a 19 min charge * Both vehicles start at 100% and arrive at destination with 10% remaining. **My point of this is: I think most of us feel like we need a minimum of 300 real world miles in our EVs. While I generally agree with this, it's kind of rare to actually need that many miles for 99% of driving.** Even when on a roadtrip, it doesn't really matter, as long as you drive a vehicle that charges well (I'm looking at you terrible Chevy Bolt) Another example is planning a roadtrip from Seattle to San Francisco. Let's assume you'll only use L3 stations along the way (CCS only, no NACS, no L2 stations overnight) 814 miles one way. It would take: * 15 hr 9 min in the Audi (incl. 2 hr 35 min of charging, 7 charges) * 15 hr 18 min in the Rivian R1T Large Quad (incl 3 hr 16 min of charging, 5 charges) * 14 hr 51 min in the Rivian R1T Standard Dual (incl 2 hr 33 min of charging, 5 charges) Don't stress about range too much. Purchase a vehicle because you like the drive, features, quality, etc."

"Well this isn't a good feeling after owning the truck for 1 week to have all my sensors, cameras, LiDaR, air suspension, crash avoidance, traction control, ABS, stuck in conserve mode, etc for the second time. It's sketch while on snow and the suspension suddenly stops working and sinks to the bump stops ?. Basically the truck is in analog mode and all the safety systems are offline. Hard reboot and console reboot doesn't work. Letting the truck go into sleep fixed it once. It didn't have these issues until the latest firmware update 2024.43.01. How did this OTA get approved for production? Did they not do pre-production functional testing first? Maybe I should work for Rivian, I use to do firmware functional testing for hardware devices ? "Rivian R1T QM to R1S Gen 2 Dual Max - Don't do it "Sometimes we don't truly appreciate the value of something until it's gone." Every day I drive my Gen 2 R1S, that sentiment hits home. My family situation changed, and I needed a bigger car. I could have made do with my R1T, but after seeing all the glowing reviews of the R1S, I decided to take the plunge. I went for the Dual-Motor Max Pack for the extra range. For reference, my R1T had a VIN in the 8000 range, and my R1S is in the 54,000 range. **Negatives:** 1. **Acceleration:** The Dual-Motor Max doesn’t hold a candle to the Quad-Motor. If you’re used to the Quad’s acceleration, the Dual will leave you disappointed. The way it is tuned, it feels sluggish. 2. **Suspension:** The Gen 2 R1S suspension feels floaty. It lacks the stability and sporty feel of the R1T. 3. **Audio:** The audio system has taken an enormous hit. I’ve made a separate post detailing this. 4. **Material Quality:** The plastics used on the doors, steering wheel, and other areas feel cheaper. The cabin no longer has that premium touch. It’s hard to put into words, but once you sit inside, you’ll notice. 5. **Doors:** The doors feel lighter and less substantial. The locking mechanism has also changed for the worse, losing that solid, high-quality feel. 6. **Range:** Despite the new motor's supposed efficiency, there’s little difference in real-world range. My R1T had a 135 kWh battery, while the R1S has a 142 kWh battery, but I’ve only noticed a 10-15 mile difference. In fact, I used to get around 330 miles on a single charge with my R1T, and conserve mode was always there when needed. 7. **Automatic Front-Wheel Drive:** This feature is enabled by default on highways, and in some situations where I needed quick acceleration, the vehicle hesitated, taking a moment to switch to the rear motor and regain traction. 8. **Cabin Noise:** The HVAC system in the R1S is noticeably louder compared to the R1T, even at the lowest setting. I’m not sure if the cooling systems are different, but the noise inside the cabin is significant. 9. Service issues - Car has alignment issues, I check for service dates, it shows availability in December. 10. Software issues - So many error notifications. Usb c ports stop working every other day. Have to reboot the vehicle to fix. **Things I knew but still miss:** 1. The 12V charger in the dash—essential for someone on the road frequently and needing quick charging for multiple devices. 2. One year less on the warranty. 3. Reduced frunk storage space in the new model. 4. No charging improvements 5. The rear seats, 2nd row and 3rd are very difficult to adjust. 6. Console charger, still unusable. It's been 3 years. Come on now. **Positives:** 1. The camera. Great picture quality. While they might have made improvements under the hood, the overall cheapening of the vehicle has tarnished my day-to-day experience. In hindsight, I wish I had kept my R1T. It feels like Rivian has done a ba"
