Buyer brief · 246 words

The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Long Range puts down 201 hp, 261 miles of EPA range and a 65 kWh battery, and a worth-pursuing score, but only after a hard inspection and a fair price.

Score read

A 69/100 makes this a records-first inspection. The useful split is software and driver-assist score at 84/100 versus range and efficiency score at 53/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: software tech and owner satisfaction. If the seller cannot show recall completion, price that risk or move on.

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (53/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 261-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 10-year/100,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

While at a light, the auto stop/start kicked on but when it was time to start driving again and I pressed the gas pedal, the car would not move. There was a long beep and then the check battery icon and an alert came on my dash board stating “Auto Stop is Off. Shift to P or N and start engine manually.” When I turned off the ignition and restarted the car, the alert went off but two additional icons showed up on my dash board- check engine and check oil. Then my steering wheel locked up and I could not press on the breaks or gas pedal. I could not operate my car for more than 30 minutes.

The steering wheel locks while driving. The headlights have gone out randomly on this car a few times. The steering locked up in a turn and I went into another guys lane and almost caused a major accident. The dealerships say they can’t recreate the issue but never really tried. The vehicle has been lemoned law but the manufacturer now is playing games and not following through on the lemon law replacement vehicle. I do have multiple reports from being towed off the highways and from the police having to chase me down to help avoid a major accident.

- While driving, everything electrical turned off (engine stayed on) for approximately 3 seconds including headlights, navigation, dashboard containing speed, music, etc. - This occurrence happened during the daytime, so there was no danger; however this has also happened to me at night a year ago, causing me to lose all vision at 40 MPH which was a major safety risk. - This problem has occurred with others [XXX] ) and Hyundai has not acknowledged it or been able to reproduce it, simply returning the vehicle to people who bring it in. - My vehicle has not been inspected, as from others' experiences it sounds like this issue does not register as an error code and would be a waste of time with no action from Hyundai. - There are no other issues with my vehicle in terms of warning lights or messages. I have frequent oil changes and have only driven this car 6,000 miles. It was bought brand new in 2024. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Much like in the NHTSA bulletin concerning 2024-25 Hyundai's Santa Fe, Santa Cruz, and Tuscan, my 2024 Hyundai Kona SEL has a glitching/flashing infotainment screen. Perhaps it is due to the Coaxial shield as in the bulletin for other same model years Hyundais. The screen flickers and the pace at which it flickers and becomes static-y increases, and eventually turns all snowy and sometimes goes blank. A simple pushing of the reset button does not fix the issue. It is distracting, and dangerous, especially if one is relying on the maps for guidance, because there is no way to get the screen to stop the glitching when it occurs. But, it is very random when it happens. Maybe once out of every 10 drives. Seems to be an issue with other drivers with the same 2024 Hyundai Kona.

The contact owns a 2024 Hyundai Kona. The contact stated that the vehicle was equipped with alarms set to sound off and send a text notification when the vehicle was accessed without the key, key fob, or remote access being activated. Later, the vehicle began displaying additional electrical issues. The contact stated that the instrument panel would illuminate intermittently and display different warnings and systems being activated; however, the contact was unable to recall what the lights that were displayed. While driving on a forked road, the Lane Assist feature prevented the vehicle from being able to veer left, keeping the vehicle driving straight. The contact used excessive force to steer the vehicle to veer towards the left. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired for any electrical failures. The contact received notice of a recall for the software regarding the Theft Prevention system, needing a software update. The vehicle was returned to the dealer, and the remedy was completed. While attempting to accelerate after being idle at a red light, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact turned off the vehicle, waited for a while, and then restarted the vehicle, at which time the contact was able to continue driving. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was returned to the dealer, who diagnosed that the software update caused the battery to drain quickly. The battery was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer opened two cases for the failures. The failure mileage was approximately 9,500.

Hyundai engages emergency parking brake EPB) automatically when in parked on an incline. The EPB will disengage under normal operation if all doors are closed. If doors are open, EPB will not disengage. If going from park to drive, this is not a problem. However, if in drive, traveling with trunk open for oversized cargo, the vehicle will drive normally until a stop on an incline, when the EPB will engage automatically, and then when the driver tries to proceed from the stop, their vehicle is disabled. The driver can provide power to drive train and burn the EPB. The driver must manually intervene after every stop on an incline to disengage the EPB to avoid being disabled at an intersection.

A few different days over the past few months. Driving heated seats stopped working. Check engine warning light on intermittently. Key fob not working. Multiple error codes stored in system cleared by dealer. shut down the car screen has stayed on. AC light has stayed on when car is off. Screen has turned off “check you back seat” upon leaving the car heard the engine still on 3x. At the gas station turned off the car, miles to zero reading 5, P park stays on, odometer reading on. As tank filling miles to zero rapidly increased from 5 to 300. I have a video of this. Been in for service multiple times. Presently at the dealer. They r unable to replicate this. They do not seem concerned about this. I feel it is a safety and operational concern. Prefer by car not be communicating even with itself while I’m pumping gas. They want me to pick up the car. I do not wish to. I have asked if miles to zero reading is supposed to increase real time I would like to see this is the manual or other documentation. Multiple people I know with 2024 Hyundai Kona AWD cars are having the same problem around 10k or so miles. The AWD is locking up. Car feels like rear wheels are slipping when turning and accelerating out of a full or partial stop. This is a widespread problem on this model and I am very surprised it is not a recall yet. Many drivers are having coupler or entire rear differential replaced on their cars-some less than 1 year old, or about 1 year old.

On Monday [XXX] I was driving home from work going 45 mph when my forward collision warning came on and the car stopped. However, there was no one in front of me. This was extremely dangerous and if there was a car behind me I could have been hit. I am extremely scared to drive this car. I had it towed to Lynne’s Hyundai in Bloomfield NJ. They said their computer could not find an issue so had nothing to fix and asked me to pick up the car. However, after what I experienced I refused and called corporate Hyundai. They told me my safety was their number one priority and they would resolve this for me. However, after they spoke to the dealership they said they could not duplicate the problem so nothing could be done. I gave numerous solutions that would make me happy but none were taken. While driving the vehicle the digital dashboard for the RPM's and Speedometer, infotainment center, accent lighting and all exterior lighting including tail lamps, head lights, turn signals and marker lights all powered off for approximately 2-3 seconds. During this time, the engine continued to run as if nothing had occurred. After the 2-3 seconds all affected systems that shut down turned back on and continued as if nothing had occurred. Even Apple carplay had no signal reconnection time, almost like it was never disconnected in the first place. This issue appears to just shut down all outward lighting/indicator lamps and then power back up. This issue has repeated itself on 5 separate occasions over the course of the last 3 days. Took it to a dealer on the 4th day (today, March 6th), and they could not get the issue to replicate despite driving for 30 miles and having it for 3 or so hours under their care. No codes were logged, no indicator lamps showed an issue and no erratic driving or lasting effects of the power blip. Outside of the dealership this issue has not been inspected further. A contact was made with Hyundai USA in attempt to address this safety issue. No reply has been received since submitting yesterday afternoon. This issue has happened during the day as well but given the lighting conditions is not as dangerous as losing all head lamps or tail lamps at night where the driver or other drivers may be affected as they travel about the roadways in the case of merging on and off of a highway or being able to see any animals that run into the roadway.

My 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric lost power several times while driving on roads and highways at various speeds. The first instance was on [XXX] near Burlington, MA on [XXX], and then it happened several other times before we were able to get the vehicle to a Hyundai dealership for diagnosis and repair. The power loss typically manifested in the vehicle stuck at about 20-25 mph despite generous use of the accelerator pedal (often to the floor). There were no error messages or similar diagnostic information provided before, during, or after moments when power loss occurred. Often the vehicle would return to normal operation after a few minutes or by turning the vehicle off and back on again. The safety of the driver and passengers was at significant risk, especially on higher speed roadways due to the slow speed of the Kona in these moments. The dealer service department completed extensive diagnostics as detailed in the service report PDF attached. They ultimately found a nut (designated "ge09") connecting several ground wires to the chassis was loose. After replacing the nut and tightening to specification the problem has not recurred. We are satisfied with the communication and fix from the dealership and Hyundai corporate representatives, but concerned other Hyundai owners might encounter this issue with their vehicle. I bought the 2024 Kona N Line in January of 2024. It had 64 miles on it. At 1,149 miles, an alert from BlueLink stated that a code showed up, stating engine, power train issue. I contacted my local Hyundai dealership, the one I bought the Kona from, and bought it in. The service department stated that they cannot fix it because it was a DTC Code error, and that since the check engine light wasn't on, I was stuck. I brought the vehicle in 2 more times after that. The vehicle would idle high when in park, the engine would Rev up at odd times, even while driving, like I was ramming my foot down on the gas peddle, which I was not. Also, while traveling up hill, the engine seemed to catch and want to shut off before catching itself. It would idle high while doing that as well. I'm at a loss on what else to do.

while traveling from MN to KY on the interstate on two separate occasions the vehicle suddenly applied the brakes at Highway speeds around of 80mph. There was nothing Infront of me on either occasion. Then the next day it did it again at highway speed. Then I was driving on a mountain road in the smokies and it gave me a message that the front camera was blocked, and it was turning off the safety braking etc, I stopped when I could and took pictures there was nothing blocking the camera. I had a similar problem in March of this year which is documented by Hyundai Customer service as the Dealership told me that they could do nothing to help me.

Upon leaving the City, I attempted to accelerate and my car did not respond. I smelled Exhaust Gas fumes faintly. I heard the warning chimes approximately 4 times, but did not see any warning light. I coasted to a stop a few hundred feet where I could get off road. I pushed the Engine off button and waited a few seconds, then I restarted the car and proceeded like it never happened. This could have caused serious problem if I had been on a freeway, Tunnel, or Bridge. I took the car to the Dealership Service Department the next day, and they checked it out with nothing showing up. My Incident seems like the faulty EGR Valve with poor solder connections: NHTSA Recall No.: 24V-308 Manufacturer Recall No.: 260, but my Vehicle was not Included in this Recall.

When operating the vehicle, all the electrical systems will just cut power for 1-2 seconds. The infotainment, gauges, and headlights will all go completely black, speakers will stop, everything. All electrical power cuts. This happens when driving the car, day or night and happened now 6 times in the last few months. Hyundai dealers say nothing is wrong. If driving at night, it will cause no visibility of the road since the headlights and taillights turn off when this happens. Numerous people are experiencing this issue with the same model and getting told nothing is wrong. Safety is HUGELY at risk as this can cause an accident very quickly with no visibility with the car going dark. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer several times with no luck of tracking down the problem. No warning lights, fault codes, or messages are associated with this issue with the vehicle either.

On June 5, 2025 I picked up a passenger who couldn't sit in the passenger seat because the headrest is canted at an unsafe angle so the passenger looks down and cannot look straight through the windshield. There is a page in the manual that shows the headrest is adjustable; this is wrong because the headrest is not adjustable. On July 2, 2025 I took it the vehicle in for recalls and asked about this; the service worker said there is no solution because replacement headrests are the same.

The conditions for this safety concern were [Headlamps were set to auto, Apple Carplay was wirelessly connected, and the vehicle was in motion.] After a trip to a dealer, the dealership could not reproduce the concern though an advisor did state this was not an isolated incident. No warning lights or error messages appeared on the gauge cluster that would indicate a problem.

"Hyundai Kona 2024 Limited first month review I turned in my 2021 Nissan Sentra lease last month for the new Kona and I cannot be any happier. I love it so much. The headlights, dual 12 inch screens, and ventilated seats are my favorite parts. Also, it’s the perfect size for me as a single person who usually has like one two friends in the car. The backseat is more than enough room for two grown adults. Anyways, just wanted to share my thoughts after a month for anyone who is holding out. You won’t regret it!"

"Help! US Hyundai Kona N Line 2024, CarPlay Broken, Can’t Update, No Dealer Support Abroad Hi everyone, I’m at a loss and really need advice from anyone who’s dealt with U.S.-spec Hyundais abroad or ccNC head unit issues. **The Problem:** * I imported a 2024 Hyundai Kona N Line from the U.S. to Iraq. * Apple CarPlay does **not work** on my current infotainment software (ccNC head unit, SW: SX2.USA.ccNC.001.001.230901). * When I try to update the head unit with an official Hyundai Navigation Updater USB (from the U.S. update site), the car INSTANTLY shows:*“Please check the device containing the update files and try again.”* * The car never scans the USB at all – it just rejects it immediately. **What I’ve Tried:** * **Contacted Hyundai USA (Bluelink, Mapnsoft/Navigation, and Consumer Affairs):** * They told me they don’t support cars located outside the USA/Canada. * They also told me all U.S. head unit updates are unavailable globally until mid/late October due to a “temporary server issue.” (Email attached below.) * **Contacted Hyundai Middle East/Bluelink MEA:** * They stated that they only officially support Bluelink for cars sold and registered in the Middle East. * Explicitly refused to help with Apple CarPlay or software updates for U.S. imports (screenshot below). * **Visited local authorized dealer in Baghdad (Al-Oula Motors):** * Dealer refused to even look at the car as soon as they learned it was a U.S. import. * I clarified to all of them that I **don’t need navigation or maps**, just an infotainment system update so CarPlay will work. * **Tried all USB formatting tricks** (FAT32, NTFS, different brands, sizes, both SSD and regular stick). * **Advanced firmware hack methods aren’t even possible**: since U.S. update files are now blocked/unavailable until October, I can’t download the latest .swu files to try bootloader workarounds. **Emails and Responses:** * Hyundai USA: “We don’t support updates or troubleshooting outside North America. Updates globally are down until October.” * Hyundai MEA: “We do not support U.S.-spec vehicles. Bluelink and CarPlay support is not available for imports.” * Local Dealer: “No support for U.S. vehicles.” **So Now I’m Stuck:** * CarPlay is dead. * Can’t update firmware/infotainment. * No local, regional, or official U.S. support. * Even DIY update tricks are blocked by Hyundai’s current update blackout for U.S. vehicles. **Has ANYONE found a workaround or third-party solution for this?** * Is there a way to “unlock” USB update mode on the ccNC unit? * Will a U.S.-spec head unit *ever* be updateable abroad, or am I just out of luck? * Any alternative to at **least restore basic CarPlay**, even if I lose navigation? **Any help or experience would be really appreciated.** I’ll post screenshots of the emails and error messages if needed. Thanks in advance!"

"Thanks, I'll check with my Dealer when I get home. Should be due for another oil change soon after we get back from our cross Canada trip. The only time I had a dead battery was when I has a CAA insurance dongle plugged in to the OBDII port and a OBDII heads up display after that. #6· Jun 18, 2025 Cannot speak to the '24 and newer, but the last OTA update for the Kona N ('22-'23) screwed up the programming for the "N" paddles on the steering wheel. These can be programmed to whatever of a multitude of functions the owner prefers, but will randomly change the function without notice. What may have been "Driving Mode Select" can become nothing, or something unrelated. #7· Jun 18, 2025 Is this why the song identifier has also been discontinued? My car was turning itself off while driving. It was very scary, I'm sure this was part of the problem. #9· Jun 18, 2025"

"2025 Hyundai Kona SEL Accessories Hi there, I just bought a 2025 Kona SEL package (No technology or convenience packages were available at my dealer unfortunately) and I want to add a wireless charger phone mount and a center console organizer. I've been pouring over amazon and online for options but it seems most are for the 2024 SEL or another model since the cup holder positions are different and don't seem to be able to fit my vehicle. My center console is very barebones, just a tall space with a cover basically. And the cup holders are diagonal from each other. Any good options for me to look at to get around this issue? And then with the wireless phone mount I just don't want a vent clip one and have never used a suction cup one and wanted to know how reliable they are. Thank you!"
