Not always. A low score flags items to verify before buying — and often signals stronger value, since heavier discounts already price the risk in. See TrimIndex’s pre-purchase inspection →

2025 Rivian R1T All-Terrain Performance Dual Large (20in): the score gets it into the conversation; battery and service records decide whether to make an offer.

Score read

A 69/100 makes this a paperwork-and-test-drive decision. Software and driver-assist score is the cleaner read at 91/100; range and efficiency score needs more diligence at 36/100. Owners on Reddit repeatedly cite range and owner satisfaction as recurring problems. A clean VIN lookup matters more than the headline count.

Price context

Bring your own comps Pull current comps before negotiating

This trim started from $81,900 new. Used examples have come down since launch, but pricing varies by miles, condition, and how the model is moving right now; pull a current KBB Fair Purchase, an Edmunds True Market Value, or an active dealer listing for this exact trim, and anchor your offer there. Walk if the seller will not move off new-car-style pricing.

Who this is for

✓ Good for

  • Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging

✗ Avoid if you are a

  • $
Bargain hunter Best TCO, reliability + low depreciation

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (36/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

  • Verify Current market pricing is not confirmed well enough for this trim.

Mitigation Compare KBB, J.D. Power, and live listings for the same trim before treating price as a buying signal.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 289-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

The Financing Room · What Actually Happens

Dealers make ~$16,628 on the average car loan.

After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.

01 · Without pre-approval
+$2,406
Rate markup

78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB

With pre-approval ↓
Rate is already locked

Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.

02 · Without pre-approval
+$1,800
"What's your monthly budget?"

Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg

With pre-approval ↓
One number to negotiate

Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.

03 · Without pre-approval
+$1,775
GAP + extended warranty upsell

Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy

With pre-approval ↓
You can shop it or skip it

Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.

04 · Without pre-approval

"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending

With pre-approval ↓
Financing already closed

A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.

That's 16 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.

Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

I leased my Rivian on June 28th. Around July 21st, the vehicle started to drift to the left. On August 19th, my vehicle started to develop bump steer over uneven road surfaces. I brought my vehicle in for service on August 20th. From August 20th to now, my vehicle has had 3 alignments performed, none of them have been maintained spec. Attached are screenshots/pictures of the alignments. Between the first and second alignment the vehicle was driven about ~50 miles. Between the second and third it was driven about another 50 miles. I do not have exact mileage as Rivian has not released service records to me. My vehicle does not track straight on any surface. In addition, because of the regenerative breaking of the Rivian, when you stop the vehicle it pulls significantly to the right, approximately a half lane for every 75 feet. My concern is that the vehicle cannot maintain an alignment over the course of ~110 miles, does not track straight, exhibits bump steer, and Rivian has no available solve to this behavior.

We leased this R1T from Polestar Boston, though we live in Vt, because it was assured to us that in the event of a warranty or recall issue, Polestar Boston would pick up the car and tow to the service center for the repair. Now with this turn signal recall, the gentelman on the phone told me no... that they will not come repair the recall. That if we want it fixed, we have to drive the 4 hours to Boston and they will change the blinkers for us. What legal rights do we have here? thank you

While scheduling service for NHTSA recall No. 25V-387/FSAM-1693 (Front Turn Signal Lamps malfunction that leads to no fulfillment of FMVSS 108 requirements) I was refused correction of the recall by the Rivian Miami Service Center rep (Service Advisor Joel). I was informed that Rivian has informed the Service Advisors that this recall will only be performed on already malfunctioning lamps or in cold weather areas (car is in Miami). However, none of this is defined in the recall notice sent, nor in the Rivian and NHTSA recall database. Requested written confirmation by Rivian of this directive to both the Service Advisor and Service Representative but neither had one. The advisor mentioned he had seen one in the past but does not recall where. Meanwhile, Rivian is refusing addressing the recall on my vehicle.

"2 Months. 3500 Miles Later // Rivian R1T Thoughts, Concerns & Prayers (Review/First Impression) Two months ago my life changed for the better when I got my R1T. Let me just say; I love this truck, I love this truck, I love this truck. The R1T is also my first-ever EV. After two months and 3500 miles, I'm here to tell you all that I have loved, hated, and everything in between. I hope this can be helpful for anyone who is considering making the jump to the Rivian family / EV world. Last Vehicle: 2020 Ford Escape SE Hybrid Rivian Config: 2023 Rivian R1T, Adv. Pkg., Quad Motor, Ocean Coast/Dark Ash Wood, Rivian Blue, 21" Wheels **First Thoughts** \-Wow. This truck is stunning. I never did a First Mile (I know that was dumb, but I recommend everyone do a First Mile). But holy cow the inside of this truck is a work of art. \-Dang, this thing is Fast!! Pulling out of the SC and first time letting loose a little and Holy S&#%! This is a truck that drives like a sports car. \-The sound system is incredible. I love listening to music in this rig, it just sounds so good. \-Love my color/interior combo. Definitely a little worried about keeping it clean in the long run, but I'm hopeful. **Pros** \-The acceleration. This truck has made me a speed demon. You'll love showing off launches to your friends, but no one ever talks about all the solo launches you'll do owning this thing. Definitely have broken my previous land speed record as well. On a practical level, the truck's acceleration is great when you need to speed up and pass someone or get to speed on an on-ramp. \"

"#43· Oct 24, 2024 What was the outside temperature? Were the roads wet? Did you plug your destination into the NAV system, if so what did it claim battery usage would be? If it was dry with optimum temperature and you are getting 30% worse miles/kwh then something is wrong with it. I have an R1T which I have found to be very conservative in its range estimate, unlike my Tesla which is overly optimistic. I love the R1T so much I just ordered an R1S max pack to replace my Model Y which I frankly never much liked (poor visibility, trash UI, loud interior noise (I have first year production), and poor range perfomance. #44· Nov 10, 2024"

"(2) EPA range and mileage estimates are based on best-case scenarios of speed, ambient temperature, and aerodynamics. Few of us actually drive consistently by that best-case scenario, so most of us don't get the EPA-estimated range most of the time. Among EV companies, Rivian is considered one of the more honest about mileage and range. (3) In its interactions with me, Rivian has consistently tried to do the right thing. Sometimes that was difficult for them, because sometimes I was afraid -- and because fear leads to anger, which is hard for Customer Service staff to process. But as I got more experience with Rivian, I relaxed -- and my interactions with Rivian staff got MUCH more satisfying for all of us. #7· Sep 1, 2024"

"> ProDriven said: > > The point being, Rivian's range calculation is significantly off when compared to other companies and many of us have data to prove it. > > > Click to expand... Bullshit. Rivian's range calculation, specifically the range remaining that is displayed when you navigate to a certain location, is pretty much spot-on. I have 10,000 miles of road trips saved in a spreadsheet that confirms this. If anything, Rivian is extremely conservative in its estimates and will tell you you will have a lot LESS range when you arrive than you end up having in real life. That's because the range calculation in the navigation knows where you are going, knows the elevation changes, knows your drive mode, and has learned your driving style including how fast you usually go on highways. That's enough to make a reasonable prediction of how many kWh you will use and what you will have remaining at your destination. Do you perhaps own a Tesla? Tesla is the only company that I know of that has systematically gamed the EPA rating system to try to make themselves look better. Every other company's EPA estimates are pretty much accurate in my experience. Both gas and EV. #38· Sep 10, 2024"

"#1· Sep 1, 2024 We have had the vehicle a little over a month and non-stop issues. Was in the shop for 10 days and supposedly resolved the issues, but only 2 of the 4 issues resolved, but the 2 biggest issues still remain. We are losing 30% more charge in less then 100 miles of freeway only driving, flat terrain. We drove 45 miles the first day after the supposed repairs and used 72. The next day we drove 60 miles and used 92 miles. Service and follow through is the worst I have ever experienced. First texting, then long waits to no avail on the toll free line. Press 1 for a call back and of course no call backs. Very, very disappointed in this purchase and would not recommend buying one to anyone. We love the vehicle, just can’t continue with the ongoing issues 🙁 #2· Sep 1, 2024"

"Thank you! I absolutely respect everyone no exceptions, I am just frustrated seeing people posting wrong information because it delivers the wrong message and makes people make wrong decisions. All those factors needs to be put in place when people review them and not give people best case scenario. I am satisfied as a car only but the range i feel i was ripped off. Nothing wrong with the car. The only time it can give more than 2.0 is local in the winter. Highway winter is about 2.0 with speeds like turtle. matter fact, I decided to start a review channel to expose all those fake reviewers for the car. Every single person and reviewer i seen online doing it for the money. I do own multiple EVs and frustrating seeing what people are saying vs reality. That 2.4 kwh range is definitely achievable in summer or drive in city but not in highways even driving at 70mph its impossible. just a little background i have a tesla, polestar 3 abd bmw I4 they all give better epa than rivian. If the rivian actually had that improved air suspension everyone is talking about i wouldnt even care about that milage anymore. The suspension at small bumps makes me wanna catch superman and i am exaggerating and rivian said this is normal. If this is normal for 100k car then j can tell you this is a piece of old slow screen and crapy “junk” air suspension not even honda would use"
