2024 Rivian R1T All-Terrain Performance Dual Large

"2+ Years and 27,000 miles I have an early VIN R1T. After more than 2 years (March, 2022) and 27,000, I thought someone might wonder what long (ish) term ownership looks like. Put simply, the Rivian R1T is the best vehicle I have ever owned, driven or ridden in. That includes: BMW, Tesla, Bentley, Subaru, Honda, Toyota (180,000 miles on that one), Mercedes, and Ford. The R1T has gone on long west coast road trips to visit national and state parks. It has been overlanding through coastal mountains. We go to the mountains to ski. We trailer motorcycles to remote areas. One of my kids is a rower so we are constantly dealing with piles of wet and dirty crap. Pets and people are in and out a lot. Even with above average abuse, the interior remains immaculate. The gear tunnel is so practical and useful. I thought it was a gimmick at first, but is so much more. The seats are the most comfortable car seats especially on long drives. The general build quality continues to impress me. Oh and the truck is so much fun to drive and quick off the line. My only gripe is the charging pad and dirt trap in the console. That is a small price to pay for a vehicle I am happy to get in every day."

"A 48hr Review of the Rivian R1T Launch Edition - AMA! Hey everyone! Wow, it's been a very long time coming, but I finally took delivery of my R1T LE this past Tuesday. I've been waiting since my preorder date of Dec 4, 2018 (#3174) and ran into a few snags taking delivery. First, my promised November delivery was pushed out in late November after I sold my truck, and then my R1T was available while I was on my honeymoon and selling my house. But now I'm back, sold my house (yay!), am in contract on a new one (yay!!), and took delivery the morning after coming back from Coachella (ouch!). It's been a rollercoaster ride, but my Guide has been absolutely stellar and the thing finally happened! For this review, I'm not going to give numbers for each category. Instead, I'm going to share a "headline" which is what I would tell a friend in ten words or less. Then I'll dig down a bit deeper in the description. I did not include a bunch of pics because of 1) time and 2) other people have done it better! For reference, I have R1T Launch Edition in Launch Green with the All Terrain Tires and Black Mountain Interior. I also ordered the wall charger, roof racks, spare tire, and first aid kit. It was just shy of $86k after all taxes and fees. **Ride: Impressively peppy, super comfortable, and customizable** The highest compliment I can give is that it doesn't feel like a truck. It feels like a sportscar. It is absolutely wild to me that something this big, this heavy, feels *this solid*, is *this fast,* and is *this comfortable* to be in. It honestly has no right to be this good. For me, it's a combination between the motors, suspension, and interior quality (more on that below) that make the ride feel even more expensive than the truck is today — and how expensive it will be in the future. Acceleration is wild. The car is so responsive, even on my all terrain tires. It makes people scream when I punch it. I think it's very comparable to Tesla, but better than other EVs made by Ford, BMW, or Hyundai. Handling is tight and it feels like it grips the road about 5x better than my old 2016 4Runner. I'm finally comfortable taking fast tight turns! On the flip side, the regen braking is fun, but takes some getting used to — even if you've used it before in other vehicles. I find that it's quite aggressive, even on standard. But that's fine. The suspension deserves as many words as are here overall. It's really the Rivian's killer feature WRT its ride. It's so smooth, and it's honest to god fun to feel the suspension change so dramatically while you're in the vehicle. The custom drive modes genuinely feel different, and dramatically so. It's not just a throwaway feature or marketing gimmick. Sport mode feels stiff. All purpose is soft. "11 reasons to appreciate the quality and product maturity of the Rivian R1T In short: a list of problems in the $170K+ Lucid which are fully functional in the (then) $70K+ R1T. While watching an Edmunds review of the Lucid (two or three times the launch price of the R1T) they list 11 (or more) problems in the software that make the Lucid ownership experience … less than ok. They go on to compare quality and subtleties of materials and the "feel" of the cabin to other high end luxury vehicles (I see Rivian as a high end luxury vehicle in a niche market, sold in very small numbers to "cognoscenti" buyers who are fully in the loop on what's really happening in the EV world.) As one tiny gear in the mechanism of the "early adopter" phase, I enjoy offering feedback and feature requests to help Rivian build its business, participate from the customer perspective as they implement its support infrastructure and generally learn how to be a car company, It's fun and interesting to have a ticket to ride on this adventure and get a free truck with every ticket. I'm afraid the Lucid owner is not getting the same quality of adventure and this review struck me as "a list of some things we take for granted" when driving an R1T. ​ p.s. "Well this isn't a good feeling after owning the truck for 1 week to have all my sensors, cameras, LiDaR, air suspension, crash avoidance, traction control, ABS, stuck in conserve mode, etc for the second time. It's sketch while on snow and the suspension suddenly stops working and sinks to the bump stops ?. Basically the truck is in analog mode and all the safety systems are offline. Hard reboot and console reboot doesn't work. Letting the truck go into sleep fixed it once. It didn't have these issues until the latest firmware update 2024.43.01. How did this OTA get approved for production? Did they not do pre-production functional testing first? Maybe I should work for Rivian, I use to do firmware functional testing for hardware devices ? "Rivian R1T QM to R1S Gen 2 Dual Max - Don't do it "Sometimes we don't truly appreciate the value of something until it's gone." Every day I drive my Gen 2 R1S, that sentiment hits home. My family situation changed, and I needed a bigger car. I could have made do with my R1T, but after seeing all the glowing reviews of the R1S, I decided to take the plunge. I went for the Dual-Motor Max Pack for the extra range. For reference, my R1T had a VIN in the 8000 range, and my R1S is in the 54,000 range. **Negatives:** 1. **Acceleration:** The Dual-Motor Max doesn’t hold a candle to the Quad-Motor. If you’re used to the Quad’s acceleration, the Dual will leave you disappointed. The way it is tuned, it feels sluggish. 2. **Suspension:** The Gen 2 R1S suspension feels floaty. It lacks the stability and sporty feel of the R1T. 3. **Audio:** The audio system has taken an enormous hit. I’ve made a separate post detailing this. 4. **Material Quality:** The plastics used on the doors, steering wheel, and other areas feel cheaper. The cabin no longer has that premium touch. It’s hard to put into words, but once you sit inside, you’ll notice. 5. **Doors:** The doors feel lighter and less substantial. The locking mechanism has also changed for the worse, losing that solid, high-quality feel. 6. **Range:** Despite the new motor's supposed efficiency, there’s little difference in real-world range. My R1T had a 135 kWh battery, while the R1S has a 142 kWh battery, but I’ve only noticed a 10-15 mile difference. In fact, I used to get around 330 miles on a single charge with my R1T, and conserve mode was always there when needed. 7. **Automatic Front-Wheel Drive:** This feature is enabled by default on highways, and in some situations where I needed quick acceleration, the vehicle hesitated, taking a moment to switch to the rear motor and regain traction. 8. **Cabin Noise:** The HVAC system in the R1S is noticeably louder compared to the R1T, even at the lowest setting. I’m not sure if the cooling systems are different, but the noise inside the cabin is significant. 9. Service issues - Car has alignment issues, I check for service dates, it shows availability in December. 10. Software issues - So many error notifications. Usb c ports stop working every other day. Have to reboot the vehicle to fix. **Things I knew but still miss:** 1. The 12V charger in the dash—essential for someone on the road frequently and needing quick charging for multiple devices. 2. One year less on the warranty. 3. Reduced frunk storage space in the new model. 4. No charging improvements 5. The rear seats, 2nd row and 3rd are very difficult to adjust. 6. "If I’m being honest Few things, as I honestly regret trading in my Tesla for the Rivian R1T for the following reasons: - Autopilot/FSD: Rivian highway assist + doesn’t work as great and is limited to highways only. Which I find a decent amount of roads not able to start highway assist - Service: I’ve had to take in for the same issue and each time they make me wait 3+ months due it not being a “safety concern”. Frustrating cause it’s the same issue I’ve taken it in for 2x times already (along with 4 other things). To top it off, my tweeter blew so I’ve been driving for 3 months with even worse audio quality. (I have messaged numerous times about getting bumped up but to no avail.) - Auto Heated Seats/Wheel: Honestly it’s a small thing but makes a huge difference. Miss not having to think about it. - Customer Service: I’m still waiting on my adapter, but am penalized for not buying after they decided to prioritize new deliveries. As they take a while to get back to you, just put in an order and try to reach out the guide Gretchen after the first couple of days (they barely respond). - Charging Efficiency: Not as well optimized as a Tesla, it’s just not as worked out as a Tesla. Also bigger battery capacity = longer charging. - Rattles/Noise (NVH): Lots of door, speaker, and suspension rattles - Software Updates: Not as flushed out as Tesla and takes like 3x longer to update. (Not a big deal, just don’t start it if you’re in a hurry) I expected some of these issues going into it (with Rivian being a new company), but debating whether I should have took the risk. Please Rivian people don’t hate me for being honest. I’m trying to be unbiased and I’m not saying anything that other car reviewers have said before. Especially for a $80k truck, Rivian should prioritize their existing customer versus doing the bare minimum. It’s a good truck but the Rivian service and quality let it down. Just be warned and maybe Rivian can help me get bumped up in service and get adapter! Wanted to give an honest review and maybe could help someone on the fence know what they’re getting into!
