Buyer brief · 257 words

The 2024 Rivian R1T All-Terrain Dual Standard Plus (20in) is rated at 665 hp, 277 miles of EPA range and a 99 kWh battery, and a mid-pack composite means the records-and-test-drive call matters more than the headline.

Score read

A 67/100 makes this worth comparing, not chasing. The useful split is software and driver-assist score at 88/100 versus range and efficiency score at 38/100. Reddit threads cluster around software tech and owner satisfaction — verify both against the service records. If the seller cannot show recall completion, price that risk or move on.

Gotchas

  • Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.

Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.

  • Built in Range is the easy place to overbuy this trim (38/100).

Mitigation Check your commute, winter margin, and fast-charge plan before you assume the EPA number fits your use.

Pre-purchase inspection

  • 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
  • 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 277-mile rating after a full charge.
  • 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
  • 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
  • 5 Map your normal highway route and winter margin against the EPA range before you treat it as a road-trip car.

The Financing Room · What Actually Happens

Dealers make ~$14,028 on the average car loan.

After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.

01 · Without pre-approval
+$1,927
Rate markup

78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB

With pre-approval ↓
Rate is already locked

Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.

02 · Without pre-approval
+$1,800
"What's your monthly budget?"

Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg

With pre-approval ↓
One number to negotiate

Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.

03 · Without pre-approval
+$1,775
GAP + extended warranty upsell

Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy

With pre-approval ↓
You can shop it or skip it

Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.

04 · Without pre-approval
+$8,526
Yo-yo / spot delivery

"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending

With pre-approval ↓
Financing already closed

A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.

That's 16 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.

Vehicles Steering wheel shakes when traveling over 20mph. Dealer has reproduced the problem multiple times but insists it’s a “design limitation”. The shaking can cause loss of control of the vehicle. Dealer refuses to investigate further. This has been occurring since day of purchase.

While traveling at highway speed on Interstate 95, the vehicle experienced a complete and sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle would not respond to the Vehicle Restart function. The driver was able to safely pull to the shoulder from the right lane. The vehicle was towed to a Rivian service center, where technicians identified a low-voltage event matching a known Rivian engineering investigation. Rivian confirmed no current repair exists and that engineering is actively working on software improvements. The vehicle was returned unrepaired after 13 days. Rivian also replaced the 12V battery under warranty at a prior service visit in July 2025 for a related electrical system defect. Two field service actions (FSAM-1507, FSAM-1794) have also been performed on this vehicle.

I believed my car had a problem with the seals of the windows allowing severe wind noise. After attempted repair the problem persisted and, on closer inspection, it became evident that the driver side door is mis-installed and crooked. Rivian attempted to reprair this and only made it worse. The amount of wind/road noise that is coming in now is as if the windows was open. The door frame vibrates and whistles at speed. The mobile tech doesn't feel this is repairable but Rivian won't take responsibility for it. They have denied my BBB claim and I am pursuing a lemon lawyer.

What Owners Are Saying

"2+ Years and 27,000 miles I have an early VIN R1T. After more than 2 years (March, 2022) and 27,000, I thought someone might wonder what long (ish) term ownership looks like. Put simply, the Rivian R1T is the best vehicle I have ever owned, driven or ridden in. That includes: BMW, Tesla, Bentley, Subaru, Honda, Toyota (180,000 miles on that one), Mercedes, and Ford. The R1T has gone on long west coast road trips to visit national and state parks. It has been overlanding through coastal mountains. We go to the mountains to ski. We trailer motorcycles to remote areas. One of my kids is a rower so we are constantly dealing with piles of wet and dirty crap. Pets and people are in and out a lot. Even with above average abuse, the interior remains immaculate. The gear tunnel is so practical and useful. I thought it was a gimmick at first, but is so much more. The seats are the most comfortable car seats especially on long drives. The general build quality continues to impress me. Oh and the truck is so much fun to drive and quick off the line. My only gripe is the charging pad and dirt trap in the console. That is a small price to pay for a vehicle I am happy to get in every day."

"Another Owner review... I know these get redundant but feel like I have a bit of a unique perspective bc I've owned wayyy to many other cars and can compare. To start here is list of cars I've owned (in order) 1996 Volvo S60 2000 Saturn Ion 1999 Ford Explorer 2004 Chevy Cobalt 2004 Toyota 4Runner 2014 BMW 3 series 2015 Prius 2016 3 series 2018 4Runner 2019 5 series 2019 Ram 1500 2017 Tacoma 2018 Audi RS3 2018 Tesla Model X 2018 BMW M2 2021 Chevy Tahoe 2021 Land Rover Defender 2021 F150 Lariat 2022 F150 Lightning 2022 Porsche Taycan 2020 Mercedes GLS 2022 Tesla M3 2023 Rivian R1T To start here is my ranking of best vehicles I've owned in order 5. M3 4. F-150 Lariat 3. GLS 2. Model X 1. R1T Experience with R1T: I have owned the R1T for a few weeks now, have already had a few issues so I don't think I'm being idealistic, but this is hands down the best overall vehicle I have ever had. Size: The size is perfect. I am not a contractor so while I have always loved having a truck the full size was just too much to navigate in city setting and midsize was always a little cramped inside and no luxuries on midsize. Ride quality: The ride quality of the R1T is impressive and I'm surprised at some of the reviews I have read. The GLS is probably the most comfortable riding car I've owned, but the R1T is easily second. M2 most fun car to drive but can't really compare that to a truck. For the size tires (20in AT) it handles everything well and has great on road manors. Storage/Interior: The convenience of the storage options is huge and interior packaging is top of the line. Overall quality is leaps and bounds above Tesla and really does feel luxury. It's by no means BMW/Merc level but it's really nice. Tech: This is another area I am surprised people complain about so much, especially knowing it will only get better. I think it's way better than Sync and only pales to Tesla. I have had CarPlay on so many cars but honestly think the best overall experience is Tesla which does not have it. So I (in minority) am glad Rivian is focusing on their UI and not letting CarPlay take over. I also LOVE the screen sizes and layout. The thing I hated most about the lighting was the screen. It looks ridiculous, I much preferred the 12in horizontal screen in the Lariat. Speakers: probably the best standard system I have encountered. I do have the meridian system so can't speak to in house. Overall value: I don't know how you beat it. I think under $120k it holds up against anything. Why I'm excited about the future for Rivian: with everything I love there are so many places they can improve the vehicle. And that's a good thing bc I think it allows them to make small changes and stay competitive in the market. Little conveniences could help push the upper price (soft close doors, audio upgrades, interior choices, photochromic roof, continued UI upgrades) I also think they have a really great chance to corner a unique sedan market. How many people lo"

"6th leg. At end of trip arrived home with estimated 28 miles of range remaining, so didn’t stop and instead continued another 13 miles down the road, then turned around and drove back to burn off the last few miles and see what the vehicle would really do at close to zero. Received ‘Low Battery’ warning at 5 miles remaining and arrived at home with SOC at 1% and 1 estimated mile remaining. Per on-screen trip monitor: 315.4 miles; 6 hours 30 min. driving; average speed: 48 mph. YMMV So… in great weather, in flat elevation Florida: Estimated Range: 369 miles; Actual Range: 315 miles (85% of Rivian estimate) In the years since I first reserved my R1T, charging options have changed of course, and Rivian just recently opened the Daytona Beach RAN charger, which is right along our preferred route and maybe 2 min. off the interstate. And with Tesla chargers coming online for us, good choices will become even more plentiful. So I am happy there is now no reason to regularly tax the R1T's battery with 100% to zero charge cycles… we’ll just stop by the RAN for a quick fill up on the way up or back. But nice to know what is possible if needed. Hope this is helpful to others considering a Max Pack... even though the Max Pack is not the MAX Pack we all hoped for years ago."

"Well this isn't a good feeling after owning the truck for 1 week to have all my sensors, cameras, LiDaR, air suspension, crash avoidance, traction control, ABS, stuck in conserve mode, etc for the second time. It's sketch while on snow and the suspension suddenly stops working and sinks to the bump stops ?. Basically the truck is in analog mode and all the safety systems are offline. Hard reboot and console reboot doesn't work. Letting the truck go into sleep fixed it once. It didn't have these issues until the latest firmware update 2024.43.01. How did this OTA get approved for production? Did they not do pre-production functional testing first? Maybe I should work for Rivian, I use to do firmware functional testing for hardware devices ?
