The 2024 Rivian R1T All-Terrain Performance Dual Max (20in) puts down 665 hp, 355 miles of EPA range and a 172 kWh battery, and a worth-pursuing score, but only after a hard inspection and a fair price.
Score read
A 66/100 makes this a records-first inspection. Software and driver-assist score is the cleaner read at 88/100; owner feedback score needs more diligence at 49/100. On Reddit, owners keep flagging the same two issues: range and software tech. A clean VIN lookup matters more than the headline count.
Price context
Used examples are running around $61,103. This trim started from $88,000 new, though options can push the actual sticker higher; treat the market number as your negotiation floor and pull a current KBB Fair Purchase before naming a price.
Who this is for
✓ Good for
- ⏱ Daily commuter ≤50 mi/day, predictable charging
✗ Avoid if you are a
- ↦ Road tripper Long trips, needs DC fast network

Gotchas
- Serviceable Recall paperwork has to match the exact VIN.
Mitigation Use NHTSA and the automaker lookup, then require repair records instead of a verbal promise.
- Verify Owner feedback is the part to read carefully (49/100).
Mitigation Read the complaint themes and ask whether this VIN has already had those issues repaired.
Pre-purchase inspection
- 1 Run the exact VIN through NHTSA and the automaker recall lookup before discussing price.
- 2 Compare the dashboard range estimate with the EPA 355-mile rating after a full charge.
- 3 Confirm how much of the 8-year/175,000-mile battery warranty remains and whether it transfers.
- 4 If road trips matter, run a short DC fast-charge session and watch whether speed tapers normally.
- 5 Read the complaint themes, not just the count, and ask the seller whether those issues have shown up on this VIN.
VIN status first This model has 6 NHTSA recall records. The exact VIN lookup decides whether the car in front of you is clear.

Dealers make ~$14,028 on the average car loan.
After the price is set, the finance manager runs four plays to rebuild margin. Every buyer without a pre-approval is a target. Here's exactly what they run — and what stops each one.
78% of dealer loans carry a hidden +1.13% markup above what the lender actually charges. You never see it — it's buried in the contract. · CFPB
Dealer must match or beat your lender — they can't add margin invisibly. The markup play is dead on arrival.
Once you answer, they stretch the term to hit your number. Median result: $4K less off the price, 12 more months on the loan. · Industry avg
Financing is done. Only the sale price is on the table — and the dealer knows it.
Back-office F&I profit averages $1,975/vehicle, up 8.5% YoY. These products exist — but dealer markup is 4–10x what you'd pay elsewhere. · Dealership Guy
Dealer GAP runs $500–1K. Your insurer sells the same coverage for $100–250 over 5 years. Now you know.
"Your loan fell through — come re-sign." This pulls your APR up +5% on average. It's legal. It works because you've already driven the car home. · Ctr for Responsible Lending
A lender commitment letter means the deal is final. "Pending dealer approval" doesn't apply. You can't be yo-yo'd.
That's 16 months of your car payment — handed to the dealer's finance department for nothing.
Takes 2 minutes. No obligation to use it — but you'll walk in with all the leverage.
Pre-approval is a soft credit inquiry — no score impact. FICO treats all auto-loan hard pulls within 14 days as one, so you can still shop rates at the dealer.

While traveling at highway speed on Interstate 95, the vehicle experienced a complete and sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle would not respond to the Vehicle Restart function. The driver was able to safely pull to the shoulder from the right lane. The vehicle was towed to a Rivian service center, where technicians identified a low-voltage event matching a known Rivian engineering investigation. Rivian confirmed no current repair exists and that engineering is actively working on software improvements. The vehicle was returned unrepaired after 13 days. Rivian also replaced the 12V battery under warranty at a prior service visit in July 2025 for a related electrical system defect. Two field service actions (FSAM-1507, FSAM-1794) have also been performed on this vehicle.

The entertainment and gauge cluster displays begin to slow down and stutter, eventually leading to a full reboot. This causes the ADAS view, as well as the blind spot cameras, and reverse camera to display a still image, even while the vehicle is moving, or display no image at all. Also, if this happens while Highway Drive Assist is active, the state of the system is not displayed and an audible chime is played.

I believed my car had a problem with the seals of the windows allowing severe wind noise. After attempted repair the problem persisted and, on closer inspection, it became evident that the driver side door is mis-installed and crooked. Rivian attempted to reprair this and only made it worse. The amount of wind/road noise that is coming in now is as if the windows was open. The door frame vibrates and whistles at speed. The mobile tech doesn't feel this is repairable but Rivian won't take responsibility for it. They have denied my BBB claim and I am pursuing a lemon lawyer.

Rivian alerted me that there was a “service action” related to the hub, and while waiting for that appointment, the hub came loose while driving and began grinding against the brakes and went into full system shutdown. The truck needed to be towed and the hub and brakes needed to be replaced. The truck was undrivae while driving at highway speeds and could have crashed. When questioned, the service center reiterated that this was “not a recall” but simply a head up. The repairs were covered under warranty.

I've had no issues with bugs, although I know there have been a lot of reports, and then there was the infotainment brick issue. And the only thing I found was a tiny tiny dent on the driver's door. Rivian fixed that. If I judge Rivian like any other legacy car company, the build quality is almost perfect (based on a sample of 1). JoinedNov 7, 2022Threads14Messages256Reaction score251LocationNJVehicles I sent my R1T for alignment. They fixed that ( replaced the toe). But now I only get 1.7mile/kwh. Every update I received had minor issues to go along with the improvements. A good example is the six months of updates that each broke the tow mode range calculations in a new way. Fixed one thing, messed up another. To be fair, that was somewhat early on. It’s still cool that they can make so many incremental upgrades just via software though."
"Consumer Reports and Rivian owners The most recent CR study of cars showed some interesting results: Rivian was the only brand which scored 5/5 in “would you buy again?” question—no other brand earned that high a score. On the other hand, those same owners were brutally honest regarding defects and issues with their cars. The “predicted reliability” scores for R1T and R1S (especially) were not good. For context: This is not JD Power, it’s more or less restricted to CR readers. But the same people who expressed such enthusiasm for buying another Rivian didn’t pull their punches in expressing frustrations and disappointments with their R1. A brand with a broader product line is most likely going to have more noise in their numbers—the fact Rivian is limited currently to the R1 models may provide an advantage in these results. Still, the enthusiasm of the owners bodes well for Rivian. They will be the evangelists for the brand and help boost awareness and positive public image."
"Well this isn't a good feeling after owning the truck for 1 week to have all my sensors, cameras, LiDaR, air suspension, crash avoidance, traction control, ABS, stuck in conserve mode, etc for the second time. It's sketch while on snow and the suspension suddenly stops working and sinks to the bump stops ?. Basically the truck is in analog mode and all the safety systems are offline. Hard reboot and console reboot doesn't work. Letting the truck go into sleep fixed it once. It didn't have these issues until the latest firmware update 2024.43.01. How did this OTA get approved for production? Did they not do pre-production functional testing first? Maybe I should work for Rivian, I use to do firmware functional testing for hardware devices ?
